#EthanCleansUp

Post by naednek »

So lots of things happening with Ethan's big day this Tuesday. I like to share since you're all extended family. We gotta be in our 20 year mark by now right?

In case you don't know... Ethan is having his wish granted by our local Make A Wish chapter. His wish is being a garbage man. On Tuesday July 26th, he'll be picked up at his school with all of the students cheering him on as embarks his new career. We'll be making several stops throughout Sacramento, (VSP, a firestation, my work (CAL-EPA) Frank Fats, a restaurant, and end up at the State Capital where he will be introduced by our new Mayor, the Chief of Police, and other dignitaries around the area.

He has no idea that this is going to happen. He has completely forgotten that he went to the Wishing Place to make his wishes, so this will be fun seeing his reaction.

The media and community is heavily involved. Yesterday I did an interview with the Sacramento Bee, and today we had an interview with our local news station. A live interview will take place the day of as well.

I can't wait for him to experience all of this!

I'm also finishing up his garbage truck video that you and many others have submitted.

I'll use this thread to update things as they come. You can also keep up to date by searching #ethancleansup

That's pretty cool. Should be a lot of fun for him.

Ethan's wish just screams for CNN coverage on the morning Robin Meade show.

I hope it makes some of the main cable news networks, I'd love to see him and family
on his job of a lifetime. It's awesome that he's getting to do something he's always wanted.

Great job Dad, you rock!!! :music-headbanger:

Anyone live in Toronto Canada?

I'm hearing they are running an article about this. Yes, Toronto, clear across the continent.

I was wondering if you could mail me the newspaper if it happens? I'm assuming it will be tomorrow's paper or the day after.

I know i can probably find it online, buy wife likes to scrapbook, so print would be best.

I also just had an AP interview that might make the national news. how crazy is all of this. Ethan still has no idea, and it's becoming difficult to not talk in front of him. We kept him out of school today because 1st graders talk, and we've been over the local news all weekend.

Found it on the Toronto Star's website. It's an associated press article. I don't get the paper delivered but I'll see if I can track one down somewhere.

Long-time lurker from Toronto here. I do get the Toronto Star home delivered so I can save J.D. the trouble of having to trying to find the paper. Just PM me your details and I can send over the print copy.

Here's the current article that AP is running online.
Ethan Dean will be living his dream on Tuesday.

The six-year-old has a garbage truck bedspread and pillow. He has garbage truck toys. He's had a garbage truck birthday party.

Now, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he's going to experience what it's like to be a garbage truck driver. The boy who has cystic fibrosis will ride in a real garbage truck through downtown Sacramento, collecting trash and recyclables, just like he's always wanted.

When Ethan visited the Make-A-Wish Foundation in February, he was asked a series of questions: What do you want to be? Who do you want to meet? What do you want to have? Where do you want to go?

Almost all of his answers were garbage truck-related, said Jennifer Stolo, CEO of the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He really, really wants to be a garbage man when he grows up.

It meant the wish he'd be granted wasn't too mysterious.

"We pretty much knew it was going to be about garbage trucks," said Ethan's dad, Ken Dean, laughing. He's been watching them come down the street since he first learned how to crawl, his dad said.

Stolo and her team of "fairies" knew just what he wanted.

Tuesday morning at an outdoor assembly at his elementary school in Rancho Cordova, Ethan will discover his garbage man surprise. Then he and his partner will take off, stopping in five locations for garbage and recyclables, before ending at the Capitol for a press conference and VIP lunch.

Ethan was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as an infant and began treatment at eight weeks old. The genetic disorder is characterized by a buildup of thick mucus and frequent lung infections, and the median life expectancy is about 40 years old.

Though he and his parents haven't had a big talk about his diagnosis, his dad said every once in a while Ethan asks him a question or two. He's begun to realize that his friends and younger sister don't have to go to treatment like he does.

His dad hopes none of that will be on Ethan's mind Tuesday. The only thing he needs to think about is garbage. And trucks.

"I want him to have fun and not have to worry about the day-to-day," his dad said. "It's all about him."
FYI, they're running it as one of the top headlines for the day, so Ethan is getting equal billing with Hillary Clinton. :)
