A war movie in Nolan's style could be very cool. I wonder if it will focus just on the beach perimeter and rescue or if it will be about the whole campaign (in which case it's as much a blitzkrieg movie as a Dunkirk movie).
Or something more experimental, like sticking close to a handful of characters while the larger situation falls apart in just the final hours.
Teaser trailers generally make it impossible to tell what the movie is really about unless you know something about the subject matter. This one is no exception. Saw the trailer at the movie theater a couple of days ago; so far I'm not interested (but then again I rarely watch war movies anymore).
Could be a great story. Must have been harrowing in that time.

I saw a teaser for this with Suicide Squad. It mentioned Nolan and his movies then showed what looked like a Normandy style landing but with a WWI skin instead of WWII. That was strange imo. I know what Dunkirk was about but that teaser felt like they didn't trust the audience to know, so let's make it look like something familiar ie Saving Private Ryan.
A beach is involved in both movies, but nothing in the Dunkirk teaser shows they are trying to leave rather than invade. It's no big deal really, it's just that there's an undercurrent of sneakiness, like maybe Dunkirk the story isn't big enough without evoking some D day in there.

You mean other than the opening sequence which shows the troops facing the wrong way, ie towards the ocean? I would argue that it's more closer to history in that you don't see artillery shells, german tanks nor german machine guns. You just hear the whine of a Stuka since Goring managed to convince Hitler to let the air force finish the job of annihilating the British.

The moment of glory was that they could cobble together a large flotilla to extract 300,000 troops. Germany could have altered the war if they were more aggressive in taking Dunkirk
If this were done in the style of The Longest Day or A Bridge Too Far, where the story follows certain characters I am pretty sure I would pay to see it. Do we know if it is based on a book?

You can thank the RAF and British fortitude for that but it was till a retreat.

You realize the battle of Dunkirk was in WWII, right?
That trailer makes the movie look a lot more intriguing. It looks like it will be showing me something I've never seen before in a WWII movie. Considering the amount of movies I've seen set during WWii that's a hell of an accomplishment.
So this morning I took my boys to see Rogue One in 70mm IMAX format, and as a bonus we got to see the seven-minute(!) preview for Dunkirk.
I was blown away. I really can't wait to see this movie in July.
Most of the footage is completely fresh (i.e. not in the regular preview), and there's a LOT of Tom Hardy doing Spitfire/Messerschmitt ballet. I just read that most of the dogfighting was done without CGI, making it that much more impressive.
The whole presentation was beautifully atmospheric and Nolanesque in a very good way.
The first reviews are out, and every one that I've seen says that Dunkirk is magnificent not just as a war movie but as a movie of any kind. Really looking forward to seeing it this weekend.

This must be what I/we saw when sitting for Kong Skull Island in an IMAX theater. I actually ducked with the audio from the planes.
I was visually, audibly, and emotionally transported (freakin' IMAX mann) in 7 minutes.

Going Saturday afternoon. IMAX 70mm film. One of eight in North America I think. See the 7 minute thing at Rogue One also. Put a reminder on my phone that day. Jacked.
