Can we please stop with the moody song covers in movie trailers? I feel like this has been asked about a billion times.

Couldn't they at least have gotten a breathy-voiced teen girl to sing it?

So the film looks amazing. I have to temper my expectations because I thought the exact same thing when I saw the trailer for Prometheus. :grund:

Some notes:
Was the emperor even shown?
Did I miss blue eyes?
No guild navigators. I want to see one!
The Baron was hardly shown.
Duncan Idaho (I'm assuming that was Momoa's character) is shown a lot. Just cashing in on Momoa's popularity? It seemed odd.
I'm interested to see how Paul transforms from a kid to a badass. I'm not sure Chalamet can pull that one off, but I'll give him and the casting director the benefit of the doubt.

I'd have been pissed off if they'd revealed them in the trailer to be honest. I am dying to see this version of them though!

Rabban and the Harkonnen have whips at their belts - literal fasces (as in, fascism).

Pink Floyd is a nod to Jodorowsky (he wanted Pink Floyd to do the score for his Dune adaptation).

I'm relieved that it looks action-packed enough to appeal to a mass audience.

The worm! It's mouth looks like an eye.

At least some of the Freman in the trailer had blue eyes.

I thought I saw them on Zendaya (that was her, right?). It's much more subtle than in the original, and the shadows hide a bit, but yeah, I saw them, too.

Chani and Stilgar both have blue eyes, but its subtler than Lynch.

I count at least two shots of the Baron, one at 1:22 and one at 1:57. But it seems they're mostly holding him back for a later trailer.

We don't see the Emperor or a Guild Navigator--and I don't believe we will. Villeneuve has said that he is following the book very closely.

This movie is the first of two covering the first novel, and the Emperor doesn't make an appearance until almost the end of the book. There are no fully mutated Navigators at all in DUNE, just Guildsmen who reveal that they too have all-blue eyes. (The first Navigator-in-the-tank we see is in DUNE MESSIAH. Lynch invented the big scene with the Emperor and the Navigator for exposition's sake.)

On Momoa: (plot spoilers for those who haven't read the book)
Spoiler:
Duncan Idaho is pretty important in the first half of the novel. He is Paul's best friend among the retainers, and his suspicions of Lady Jessica are given significant plot-time (as they weren't in Lynch at all).

If this movie ends where I think it will, Idaho's death will come just before the beginning of the final act.

I thought they had navigators in the book, but maybe they just talked about them.

The Guildsmen at the end of the book are called Navigators, but they look human human enough to pass. I think the glossary does allude to fully mutated Navigators, and then we meet one in the next book.

I thought a bit about how the Baron might be portrayed in this, given the glimpse of him in the trailer. I think Stellan might bring a kind of sadness to the character. Not a screaming maniac but a corrupted sick man, sort of wheezing his lines. I think Stellan could play up the bitterness and spite nicely. Portraying the Baron as a highly dangerous man because of his brilliance and insight into the darkness within the hearts of men, and driven by wanting vengeance on the Atreides. But as a broken man rather than a Kenneth McMillan-style madman.

Brolin looks like he fits in with this cast but I'll always have a soft spot for Stewart in that role. I also still prefer the Lynch uniform aesthetics...so far...but looks like this will be fantastic. I think this was a good trailer for existing fans. My wife has no idea what Dune is and it did not work for her.

Indeed. I agree.
Spoiler:
If they have any plans to do any of the sequels -- which I sort of hope they *don't do* -- then locking him in is a good idea. I think it'll be a shock to folks watching it for sure.

Speaking of that, we don't see Piter De Vries at all in this trailer.

He's played by David Dastmalchian, who was this scientist guy in Blade Runner 2049:

I joked about the Skarsgard clan earlier, but Stellan is a fantastic actor. I suspect he’ll do great things with the role. Of course, I still would’ve preferred Mads...but I say that about every role in every movie.

Hollywood always valued style vs reality. Dolph Lundgren's scene in Dawg's Life 3 was at the level of watching a John Woo inspired ballistic ballet of death but holding two pugs sideways is both overused and impractical in the real pug owning world.

Something notable:

At 0:20 in the trailer Paul says "There's a crusade coming," and the trailer cuts to a shot that's almost certainly the Harkonnen attack on Arrakeen.

But Dune aficionados will know that the "crusade" is Paul's jihad, his war for control of populated planets waged after he seizes the imperial throne. IIRC he has visions of this in the first novel even before readers can be sure of what it means. I think this is nice touch, movie-wise.

Yes, I noticed that too. That's one reason I think this trailer was primarily for the fans of the book, getting us hyped so that we can help spread the word. If the trailer had been anything less than "look how book-accurate we're going!" WB might have had to deal with a fan backlash online instead. So I think the strategy is smart.

The next trailer would probably be geared more towards mass market appeal.

I hope you all noticed no release date on the trailer. There are some rumors swirling that there's another big release date shift for movies due out this fall coming and Dune will wind up in 2021 as a result.
