Got a letter in the mail from Charter yesterday - they upgrade my area to 200 mbps down and 5 mbps up with no cost increase (we were previously at 100/5). I had actually noticed over the weekend while troubleshooting a wireless issue and was wondering what was up. Nice surprise.

They also want me to turn in the modem they gave me 5 years ago and get a new one. Again with no charge.

About a year ago, AT&T moved into our area with high speed internet. At that time I was paying $65 for 60/5 service from Charter. AT&T was offering 100 mbps for $70 (albeit with a data cap). Amazing what a little competition will do.

This is the 100/5 that $54.99 gets me.

I get 14 extra down and 6 up free.

My ping is always 70-120, my d/l speed is typically under 4, despite the plan being 5, and our uploads are about the same.

Do I have like a special outfit to wear as new Slowest Internet King on this board?

I remember the days when I had nightmares about this speed. Oh no wait, it's every goddamn day for the last 11 years. Sorry.

I'm going to call Century Link after the 7/4 holiday and see if they're still trying to scam me for long distance service to get a 40 Mbps plan.

That's actually around the max DSL I can get where I am. My cable, which is "up to" 150Mbps, is regularly below 30Mbps, and it's not unusual to dip below 10Mbps for short periods of time on occasion.

On the plus side, I just checked and they are offering a year's worth of 6Mbps DSL for 20 bucks (Canadian!) a month, which is a pretty decent deal, if I could tolerate that speed.

Anyway, my sympathy for you is no longer what it was, as things aren't as "bad" as you have suggested in the past.

I picked a couple of servers in my city, and one in Quebec that wasn't particularly close in the province next door. All results were essentially the same.

My package is: cable, "up to" 150Mbps down, 1Mbps up, 400GB down (unlimited up) per month.

Image

the upload speed is higher than my 1Mbps cap :D but the download is only ok.

I live in a 1960's housing development and the phone wiring here is made out of fossilized amber, so DSL is out of the question for now. As I said before, if I thought I would get more "up to" in my downloads I'd pay extra for the next package but I think I'd just get the same as now but pay more. I should probably research whether that's true or not.

edit: Damn, they are claiming an extra "up to" of 100Mbps over my current "up to" of 150Mbps. If I could get even 1/2 of that extra "up to" 100Mbps I'd pay the extra 20 bucks they want. 20 bucks for another 50Mpbs? Yes please. I just don't believe that I'd see that much improvement. They are offering a $5/mo discount for new customers only. Bah. 60 bucks a year off the regular price but I'm a regular customer so I get the middle finger. We'll see.

a) First see if I qualify for the extra speed package (comes with no cap, which is a nice bonus)
b) See if customers in my area are actually seeing improved speeds on a regular basis.

And mine sucks. Wasn't long ago we had 30 down then 60 down now 100 down...at least they never raised prices. I could still get faster if the other company was allowed to expand. But no our state gov cant have that...fuck you mrs Black. hope you lose come election.

Anxiety.
Have heard from the current occupant on this topic (and many others):
We are currently using CenturyLink for internet at pretty good speeds (140 Mbps at $60/month), which isn't the Gig you are used to in Longmont, but it's fast enough to support a 4K stream, an HD stream, and all of our connected stuff, so you shouldn't notice much of a difference. That said, I just bought a new router in March when we upgraded internet speeds to support it. The router wasn't cheap ($200 ish), but I'm happy to leave it for you free of charge if you are going to use CenturyLink.
Sounds good to me!
Paying for 140 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. Getting 150 Mpbs down and 19 up. 7ms ping. Also turns out the house (built in 2002) has cat 5e wiring from the utility closet (in the basement) to the appropriate room acting as my study in the upstairs. Our mesh system (Plume) will be overkill for wifi coverage in the general case, and hopefully also when we've got 20+ smart phones present on poker nights.

It is not a "World internet speeds" thread if there is no speedtest from someone that is on opposite side of the world. :)

Nothing is wrong. You're calculating ideal conditions. If I wanted to be a douche and tell my wife and daughter I was commandeering the internet for ~24 hours straight and during that time it's no Netflix and your surfing is going to be slow, then sure it might take ~24 hours. Or they can try to watch Netflix and browse the internet and now I'm up to 30+ hours and they get irritated at lower quality videos and slow browsing. So I'm resigned to downloading games on off-hours , which is why it takes 3-4 days now for me to get a modern game.

A few years ago I was able to somehow get a solid 16 hour download window and the DSL modem died -it was absurdly hot. Could have been coincidence, but now I try to do things in 4-6 hour clips. It's hell.

Yeah, I used to think my 10/1 was the slowest around. You guys with slower internet give me hope that their are worst areas for internet.

I actually have Radio WiFi, that used Radio waves from an antenna on my roof to the local grain silo(I can't make this stuff up), that has the receiver for for ISP.

I don't think they offer anything faster than what I have, and it is still 56/month. So maybe one day someone will run some cable down my road and I can get better internet. But 10/1 is actually fast compared to everything else I have had in the past.

Smoove, unless your family is using the internet while they sleep, I really can't see the download taking more than twice the theoretical max. That still leaves 48 hours where your download was in limbo.

Then again if you simply turn it off during waking hours, then yeah, but hardly a reasonable outlook.

In my house, I'm metaphorically in Georgia all.the.time.

I'm hoping when I speak to them in ~2 weeks they're going to be able to get me to 40 Mbps painlessly. I don't believe it, but I guess we'll see - and this will be the first thread I post the test result in.

Okey dokey.

Thanks to this thread I should see a major upgrade to my internet for the first time in years.

I'm actually kind of excited. Besides the removal of the cap which removes the headache of managing my data usage, and much faster downloads which should make deciding to download something or not much easier, I'm hoping for decreased ping times which should improve some online gaming.
