I am only at 10mb down and 1mb up. And that is using Point of sight radio waves. But I think that was faster than Freyland...

At least I hope it is... :)

Still 4-5 MB/S down and half of one up, thankyouverymuchforasking. :grund:

How old is the router and what sort of wireless technology is in it? With your terrible old internet you might have been rolling with 802.11n or some trash like that because it didn’t matter.

It's a NETGEAR N600 Dual Band Wi-Fi Router (WNDR3400) v2.0

I'm going to poke around a bit with it tomorrow, but yeah, I suspect it's set up for a network that was getting 5 Mbps data pipe. The tech was nice enough to leave me a stand alone modem and a modem/router combo and he verified that both get the ~41Mbps speeds coming in the house. He said if I used the modem/router combo it would drop for WiFi speeds, but it shouldn't be as slow as what I have now.

I don't even know what that means. :)

You wouldn't setup the wifi router in any particular way based on the data pipe out of the house. You would always configure it to operate in its normal mode of operation so that you can maximize transfer rates between devices within the network, regardless of the garbage internet pipe.

That's an 802.11n router though, which was cutting edge around the same time as your old internet hookup. However, it's throughput is still 300Mbps, which should be more than enough for your suddenly less awful internet. I use a Netgear R6700 Nighthawk, which is probably overkill for your situation but you might still want to investigate a newer wifi router with the more modern protocols. The one you really want is 802.11ac

I hope you have a great view of the countryside someplace. I know I do, so that's why I live with crappy internet.

There's no file sharing in my house or devices that stream media that aren't connected directly to the internet through the Wifi (like a Roku box).

I'm 99% sure it's simply on the default network settings for the router. I'm not even using 5G. Other than adjusting security and password options, I don't think I did anything else.

Right. And those default network settings provide 300 Mbps per frequency band. So in theory you can move 600 Mbps if you were using the 2.4Ghz and 5 GHz bands.

Every modern device is built for 802.11ac. They are backwards compatible to 802.11n but that shit is more than 10 years old now. It might as well be strings and cups. :)

802.11ac circa 2016 is the bee's knees by comparison. More antennas. Much better range. Much higher real-world throughput.

So I might be better off just using the provided modem/router combo from my ISP?

I've downloaded like 200 GB of games off STEAM in the last 24 hours and I'm getting a ~25 Mpbs WiFi signal. I know it would probably still take most of you like 30 minutes to download that same stuff, but you have to understand - this is insane for me. Insane.

For a long time I used the modem/router combo that Comcrap leased to me. If your awful telecom provider is trying to lease you a modem/router, tell them to pound sand and buy your own. Generally it will pay for itself in less than a year.

Korean internet is ok but not world's fastest by any means.

Of course it comes with the apartment so I'm not going to complain.

As well as with all iterations of StarCraft, and an E-sports viewing client, I imagine.

Ive never understood...at least Charter Spectrum's .....view on upload. Most places either give you the same up as down or at least a large upload speed. But they seem to hate uploads. They will give you 100 down but limit upload to 4-10. It used to be worse.

That's pretty standard for most cable internet. My friends that have comcast have the same lopsided ratio, and that's just because most people don't upload much. I like my 150 up and 150 down, but I'm doing cloud backups and such.

Lord, it was good to feel the wind in my hair!

Got a card in the mail today from Spectrum asking me to get a new modem from them and install it. Im using a DOCSIS 3.0 so not sure how a new one would help any. Ive not heard of any speed increases coming either. Mines fine so dont know if Ill bother with this.

Meh I sent for it. I may not install it but Ill have it to look into.

Updating hardware is pretty important from a security viewpoint. The older hardware is, the more likely someone's found a vulnerability.

I feel like its to slow my speed down. I dont trust them. Though my modem is 10 years old or so.

If you sent for it, you might as well install it. You have to return one of them or they are going to start charge you the full replacement price for it.

FWIW, I got the same letter and upgraded. Took about 10 minutes to make the swap. My speed did drop from 200 to 100 for about an hour, but then it went right back up. Not sure why it did that. Upgrade back around June.

That's fine, but the form on the new one says to return your old one or get charged. Up to you, but don't say you weren't warned.

If you don't have a DOCCIS 3 modem it will help a lot. Jump all over that shit and put it in straight away.

Then keep in mind that your modem wasn't designed to protect you against any of the threats that have been created in the past decade. Your internet hardware is your condom in the brothel of the internet. You've got one that looks like rotten swiss cheese.

Got it installed. Easy peesy. Im wondering if it spys on me. Maybe a mic or a camera. I blocked it away best I could. The only difference I see is the old one was DOCSIS 3.0 and this one is 3.1 and is also about half again the size. Big modem and lots of vents. The reset button is easy to get to now.

I dont have to send my old modem back because I own it. Its from when I used to buy my modem from them over time. $5 a month for like 8 months.

Spying on you....

With a camera or a microphone.

My friend, let me just remind you that every page you surf, every transaction you make online, every post of yours on this forum that runs the gamet of reality, has to go through that modem.

Yup. Camera and mic FTW!

on the flip side I wonder what was added with that .1 upgrade? Maybe just security features.

Still cant figure why its bigger. Tech gets smaller. My modems have been getting smaller for decades and now they've embiggened it :P

Can see inside of it. Its a little bitty board . Tons of open space. Its like they think its going to be really hot.

Think since I got 2 modems Ill SLI them for twice the speed.

Maybe they need the space for the mic and camera that they forgot to install.

If your old one was really ten years old, I wouldn't be surprised to find that yours includes various router features, such as wi-fie capability and network management. Mine does, and it's why it's he largest modem I've ever owned.

The only new ports on the back of this new one are 2 voice ports. Surprising they'd leave ports for a land line almost no one has now.

Just got off the phone with Charter Spectrum.

Im on the 100/5 plan. Get these prices though for upgrades they offered me....

400/10 ...I would be charged a $100 'upgrade' fee and an extra $25 a month over what I pay now.

1000/ ? .. yes they have gig surprisngly. I put ? cause I dont know their up limit. A $199 'upgrade' fee and an extra $60 a month over what I pay now.

That upgrade fee is outright robbery and the $114 a month cost is crazy. EPB that thanks to the state I cant get has NO upgrade thievery and is about $65 a month.

Unbelievable. I told them forget Ill stay at the crap I get now from them and they are lucky my state are assholes.

I have significantly less than that, and I don't think I've ever hit max speed, even with multiple PCs simultaneously streaming HD video. I'm not sure what I'd even used faster downstream for.
