I'm eating two bananas a day, not sure why or if it's helpful. I think I feel like I'm handling stress better, but maybe that's wishful thinking. I'm avoiding the scale. Maybe I'll step on one next month. It feels like I can suck my gut in more.

I won't even start trying to lose weight until April. Between now and then it's just damage control.

Well, somehow my scale seems to think I've gained 4 pounds THIS WEEKEND (I was at 208.8 on Friday), and while there was definitely some Super Bowl excess this weekend, it wasn't to that degree, and it includes a gym workout and two hockey games.

The good thing is it probably is cortisol driven water retention. I saw something similar a couple of weeks ago when I had a 3 hour practice. Then reffed a scrimmage the next morning and reffed three games that evening. It was probably a 4000 calorie day. I ate about 1200 calories and "gained" 4 pounds. It was all gone and then some a week later.

I'm glad you said that. It puts my mind at ease as well. I ran into a similar experience last week when I started working out for the first time in over two months while in a fasted state. My weight went up over 3 pounds and I could not think of reasons I would be gaining.

Unreasonably warm weather was good for weight loss. 23 miles biking + 1.5 hiking +2.0 walking on Saturday and 10.5 miles hiking on Sunday helped bring YTD weight loss total to 5.0 lbs. Still have a long way to go.

The weather is supposed to last 3 more days, but unless I take a day off, I won't be able to benefit from it.

In our home, we recently decided to try shifting to a Plant-Based diet and removed animal products almost completely. There's a distinction between Vegan and Plant-Based that the link points out, but it's mostly based on what you eat, not how you live. Vegan implies a complete absence of animal products - including leathers and furs - but not necessarily eating healthy as you still consume a lot of processed foods that simply have no animal products in them. Plant-based means I don't throw out my leather jacket and shoes, and I don't consume processed foods or animal products. It seems the saner choice for us, and so far it hasn't been too hard a switch. The only two concessions I've left so far are diet sodas and honey, so I'm not pure Plant-Based yet. That may change.

This was provoked by watching Food Choices on Netflix last week. It discusses everything about food consumption, and extols the benefits of a plant-based diet - while also reminding me of things I knew but willfully ignore, like the large-scale environmental damage caused by animal farming or fishing and the treatment of animals in slaughterhouses. Given that I'm increasingly worried about the human impact on the planet (not the least of which is what our Executive Branch of government wants to do to the EPA and Climate Change), and the fact that as I approach 40 years old, I'm still 50lbs over the weight I'd like to be - I thought it was time for a change.

I asked me wife if she wanted to, and she jumped all over the idea. She always feels better when she eats healthier, and tends to eat poorly only because of me and my choices. When I said I wanted to actually throw out everything that didn't belong in the house to help keep me on the right path, she almost fell out of her chair and ran to toss it all before I could change my mind.

I'm genuinely hoping this sticks and isn't just a 'diet' - I'm not looking at it that way. I'm trying to see it as a more positive way of life that happens to change what I eat. I don't have a goal weight, but assume I'll lose weight without any processed foods with an abundance of refined sugars and fats.

If I can remember to, I'll come back here later and repost my weight. Right now I'm at 254 pounds.

I was pretty sure that was just called 'vegetarianism'. And farming isn't always environmentally friendly, either.

Regardless, eating better is a laudable goal. Best of luck, and we will be here for support. Welcome to the struggle.

Plant farming may not be environmentally perfect, but it's still leagues better than meat agriculture, which has to engage in farming on top of farming to provide food for the meat animal. The absolute best thing for the environment would be if humans just left the planet and lived elsewhere. I don't know if anyone's ever blamed plant farts for causing global warming.

When someone says "Vegetarians", everyone I know still assumes they may consume eggs, dairy, and other animal products - just not flesh. We've moved away from those things, and I kind of like the "Plant-Based" label for that better. I suppose honey is an animal product, but the bees aren't generally slaughtered for it, and they provide a clear benefit to any environment they live in. I've considered doing honey farming myself, but I'd produce far more than I'd ever consume, and I have no interest in selling food products.

I've been in this struggle for years - up and down - over and over - bouncing around between 240 and 265 - and I would love for that to change.

A good friend of mine went vegan - well dietary Vegan. He hasn't chucked his leather dress shoes just yet as it was almost entirely for health reasons. He dropped about 50 pounds relatively quickly. The main issue I see when I talk to him is protein. He and his wife are relatively active and they have to supplement with pea protein as a vegan source of protein. That said I go there for a weekly game and they usually serve up something that is really tasty.. They've found substitutes that work for them.

One thing a lot of specialists agree on is that people, by and large, consume more protein than their bodies can possibly use - likely a harmful level, actually. A set of studies for bodybuilders, which I'm not, basically said that they'd need about 6oz (175g) of protein per day for muscle growth. I'm not after that, not even close, so another study says a normal guy like me might only need about 56g-70g of protein. Looking at that page again, it's not hard to find that spread between a healthy plant-based diet without resorting to supplements or even meats & dairy - drop the meats & dairy, add more rice, potatoes, and oatmeal - and would be easier in a Vegan diet where you're consuming a lot of processed "Vegan Meat" or other things.

I tend to lose weight rapidly at first and then taper off. A long time ago we did a vegan diet and I dropped like 40lbs in 3 months - I was doing it very wrong and starving myself, but didn't think about it because I was so pleased to see such "easy" weight loss. I was 265 and ate portions the same size as my 125lb wife, and before I was done, I was having cognitive difficulties and was basically unsafe to drive. Of course, as soon as "Being Vegan" ended, I gained 50lbs back and rocketed back up to 275.

I think each person has to find something they're happy with. I'm hoping this new way of looking at eating and life is what I need.

I would have probably done better this week, but my wife broke my willpower (not hard when it comes to food) and talked me into going to Dairy Queen twice over the weekend. Each time I got a Large Strawberry Cheesecake Blizzard. Otherwise, still eating healthy. I've guessed at my old weights. I'm pretty sure I started the year off around 245, and then peaked at 255 before I decided to try again.
