I think stability, not money, is what makes a long term contract desirable to players. If Cousins signed a multi-year 150 million dollar contract, only a small portion of that would be guaranteed in his pocket this year. If he's tagged then he gets a large chunk of money guaranteed in his pocket this year. To me that makes the money part more or less a wash.

Patriots traded for Cooks, but didn't give up Butler.
Patriots reportedly traded their first-round pick (no. 32) and third-round pick (no. 103) in 2017 to the Saints for receiver Brandin Cooks and New Orleans’s fourth-round pick (no. 118).

Butler hasn't signed his tender, so he can't be traded yet.
Cooks signals the end of Amendola. That's kind of sad...I always thought he got short shrift. He didn't have the most catches, but he always seemed to be involved in big plays in the playoffs. I hope he does well at his next stop.

The numbers were finally obtained - it's 2 years with $32 million fully guaranteed. Year 3 has the base salary guaranteed for injury (which is how they got the $40 mil number), and then the final two years have no guaranteed money. $18 mil signing bonus and salaries of 4.5 mil and 8.5 mil the first 2 years...then the base goes up 1 mil a year until the end of the deal. If he plays like a #1, this could be great and totally affordable if the cap keeps increasing.stessier wrote:Holy cow -

I hate getting too excited about the Lions, especially this time of year but I have to say that their working of the Free Agent market this season is encouraging. They went out and signed two O linemen considered the best available in by many. My biggest offseason bitch about the Lions is that they seem to grab the glory position players and ignore the trenches. It looks like that's not the story any longer. They have also picked up several depth they players as well but the O Line is clearly the big story here.
I am liking what Quinn is cooking here in Detroit. Its the first time in ages that I feel that we actually have a competent GM making the moves.

Re: 2017 NFL Free Agency Season
Day 6: Tony Romo Held Hostage
At the recent NFL Combine, Jones, in addressing the Romo matter with a group of writers, said the two "will work in the best way we can in the mutual interest for Tony and the Dallas Cowboys" and "when you've got a situation like we've got, we'll do the do-right rule."
It was implied that if released, Romo wouldn't come back to haunt his old team with another division team such as Washington, and the owner wouldn't trade his quarterback to a franchise for which he didn't care to play. The reports out of the Cowboys on Wednesday praised The Jer for electing to "do right" in letting Tony go so he and his eventual team -- the Broncos or the Texans -- quickly would settle a contract and make plans for moving ahead.
...
On Thursday afternoon, when the official phase of free agency began, Jones called a reverse and, with a tightened face (aided by unnatural measures), said that he wasn't releasing Romo.
Rather than following his own do-right rule, Jones decided he could coerce the Texans and the Broncos into bidding-war trade, and to heck with Romo and his feelings.
...
Jones was grinning like an Arkansas hog in slop, thinking he had two cubic rubes. Except that Elway has said privately that the Romo matter wouldn't be addressed unless he was a free agent -- so his contract could be reworked (lowered). Then, it became clear that the Texans wouldn't trade for Romo, either, choosing to wait until he is unrestrained.
...
Apparently, Jones will keep Romo for a while, hoping Houston GM Rick Smith, a one-time media relations assistant for the Broncos (who I must have demanded get me a diet soda or stats), or Elway will flutter their eyelids. But I know Elway has a Tommy Petty hard-headedness ("I won't back down"), and I've been assured by Houston folks that the Texans are not "all hat, no cattle."
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: 2017 NFL Free Agency Season
I’m so conflicted. I’ve been a Raiders fan my whole life, mainly because my parents lived in the Bay Area before I was born and my dad adopted the team. While I’m not all that passionate of an NFL fan any more, they’ve still been my team through thick and thin for 40+ years now.
Problem is, I hate Las Vegas. Every time I visit there, I feel like I just want to shower 50 times and leave. I can’t stand anything about it: the attitude, the glitz, the club scene, the casinos, all of it. Everything about Vegas is just…blech. You couldn’t pay me to spend any time there and I avoid it like the damn plague.
So I find myself in a weird spot. Do I stick with my team even though they’ve moved to a city I absolutely hate? Or do I become one of “those fans”, jump ship. and find a new team?

You should try spending time in Vegas that isn't on the Strip. At the end of the day, it's like a lot of other cities. The people that live there do the same things you do. Work, school, grocery shopping, etc. It's just that I could play video poker at the grocery store while the wife does the grocery shopping.

I've been to Vegas at least 20 times over the years, with about half of those staying with friends off the strip. Outside of the tourist areas, it's just a pretty boring town plunked in the middle of a godforsaken desert.

But it's got lots and lots of tourist stuff, because without it, it's just a town plunked in the middle of the godforsaken desert. I like that there is some new touristy thing nearly every week. Unlike, say the Atlantic City Board Walk, where you walk the board walk once and then if you're not gambling... nothing...

If my hometown team ever left my hometown, I'd consider it a traitorous act and forsake them for good. Then again, I probably have a dated concept of sports teams being a source of community pride. I love it when they elevate that status of the community through victory and hate it when they are an embarrassment, but regardless of how they perform they part of the community. I've never been able to become a fan of teams outside the community, and while I often watch with interest games that do not involve local teams, I do so entirely without the passion I'd have for a local team.Skinypupy wrote: So I find myself in a weird spot. That's the tricky part...we don't have a local team here. I'd be out if a Chicago team left the area, but the only one that's really threatened to in my lifetime is the White Sox, and while I wouldn't like to see them go, I'm not a fan. I don't know if I'd feel any different about it if I left the Chicago area, though. If I'm living in Dallas and the Bears moved to Little Rock, I might actually be able to see them more.
(I'd like this to be the internet genesis of a Chicago Bears to Little Rock rumor.)

I think most of it stems from the rather intense Utah/UNLV basketball rivalry from the old WAC and Mountain West Conference days. Playing at Thomas & Mack was always a nightmare.Isgrimnur wrote:At least you admit that you have a problem.

Re: 2017 NFL Free Agency Season
I thought the same thing and then I heard the league's reasoning. The coaches had determined the likely way to defend the play was to have the center fire straight up out of his stance in an attempt to touch the Leaper so it would be a penalty. They feared this was going to lead to head contact, Leapers landing on their own heads as the got upended, or Leaper falling straight on the back of the center/guard.Rip wrote:What is next, a no tackle rule?
It stinks as it was a fun play, but it's not totally crazy to ban it.
