Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi

Post by Skinypupy »

Did we have a thread for this yet? Did a search and couldn't find one.

Regardless, Episode 8 got a title today: The Last Jedi.

In only if the last Jedi turns out to be Jar Jar.

I'm excited that the movie's release is getting (slightly) closer. Also that the title isn't dumb, though otherwise I don't care much.

So we've gone from "Return of" to "Last" in 30 years. Sad.

To be fair, there is no difference between singular and plural. So he did Return. Even then, he was the last. Whether or not that has been the case in the intervening thirty years remains to be seen.

I don't either, but figured this small, independent film could use it's own thread.

You know, for the exposure.

My mom isn't super tied into mass pop culture. When I went to see Captain America 2, I was talking to her on my cell on the way to the theatre. When I told her what I was going to see, she said, "Now, how did you hear about this movie?"

Somehow they got the word out on that indie film.

I think that's a great title. I wonder if it will have an alternate meaning, referring to more than just Luke.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Yeah, they were going to be more clever but "The Penultimate Jedi" just confused the focus groups.

He was still trying to get over the fact he was turned on by his sister. Also, there wasn't much of the Jedi Infrastructure left to work with.

Now I need to watch TFA gain.

Yeah, he started to, but then Ben Solo / Kylo Ren got turned and (with help - other fallen students?) slaughtered the rest of the trainees.

I *do* really hope that Luke has been doing something on that island for the past couple decades, rather than just moping and whining. Though then again, he is Anakin's son, so...

Maybe Luke refuses to train Rey as a "Jedi", and from here on out there is some other approach to mastering the Force

He starts training her, but she will get a feeling that her friends are in trouble and run to help them against his advice before her training is complete. A limb will be severed in the process.

The part where she runs with him on her back will be extra challenging.

Luke's training was pretty abbreviated. I have no idea how he could think he has what it takes to train Jedi. It's not hard to see why a student of his would be drawn away by the dark side.

I seriously doubt this will in fact be the Last Jedi, unless every other movie that Disney puts out is a prequel.
But hey, they are in bed with Squaresoft, so maybe its The Last Jedi, The Last Jedi II, The Last Jedi III, and so forth.

Cool name, can't wait.

To me the title is a little foreboding. Seems pretty likely that Rey is on the path to become a jedi. If she is the last (at least for now) that doesn't bode well for Luke's survival. For what it's worth (nothing), I never expected Luke to survive this trilogy--I just hope he goes out in a blaze of badass jedi glory.

And I could be all wrong too.

"Jedi" is used as both a singular and a plural noun in Star Wars, so the title isn't clearly referring to only one person.

It will be a retread of episode 5 just as episode 7 was a retread of episode 4. Young untrained potential meets Jedi master, must over come some character flaw, face the evil, etc.

Yeah, I didn't like episode 7 at all :)

It doesn't fit with the Star Wars title naming scheme. :tjg:

Yeah, my guess is the title refers to both Luke and Rey. Rey because it feels like Luke will end up training her so that she can rise up against Kylo. On the other hand, at the time of ESB, after Obi-Wan's death, it was Yoda who was thought to be the last and going on to train Luke, and if TFA followed a similar formula to ANH, I wouldn't put it past them to do the same thing here.

The title refers to Luke Skywalker. I know this because they already told us this is so.

This is a direct quote from the opening scrawl in The Force Awakens:

"Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister first order has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed."

There is also a line in TFA where they maybe give hint to the name of Episode 9.
