[Film] Venom (2018)

Post by Isgrimnur »

Gizmodo
Pretty much out of the blue, Sony has announced it will release a Venom movie on October 5, 2018, possibly directed by Alex Kurtzman.

The news, first reported by ERC Box Office, is very surprising, considering no one has heard a peep about a Venom movie for a long time.
...
Last year, news broke that writer Dante Harper was working on a script that would reintroduce the character as the star of his own franchise, unrelated to the new Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland. But that was the last we heard of it.

With this announcement coming only from Sony and not Marvel, it seems likely a standalone take on the character is still the plan. However, with a character whose history is so closely tied to Spider-Man, and a new Spider-Man movie coming out, you have to wonder what exactly is the approach— and who, exactly, will be involved.
...
Anyway, it’s incredibly odd for this film to pop onto the release schedule so suddenly. We contacted Sony and it confirmed the date was legitimate. The Hollywood Reporter also added that writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner did the most recent draft of the script (working off of Harper’s work) but that Kurtzman is not attached to direct. We’ll have to wait and see if they’re right or if ERC is.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Yuck. Cant' stand the character.

But, thought the same thing about Deadpool and I enjoyed that movie.

So, color me torn.

Given how Sony suddenly thinks R-rating superhero movie = $$$ I am not surprised that they will try a Venom movie (I'm also going to guess it's going to be a lot more violent and possibly R rated)

Maybe because Marvel has helped them resurrect Spiderman, Sony is now feeling inadequate. To compensate they are trying to create a new franchise in order to prove they aren't Fredo to Marvel's Michael.

I'm not a huge comic book guy, but isn't Venom a villain? Does he have like an antihero turn in the comics?

If an evil character becomes popular in a comic book, odds are they'll turn him into a hero at some point.

Venom is/was very popular. I could never understand why, myself. But he was big enough that Sony studios forced Raimi to screw up his third Spiderman film by shoehorning the character into the story.

QFT. I loved the Sandman stuff in this movie.

I can't remember any redeeming features from this movie, other than unintentional humor. I'm sure that adding Venom didn't help, but I find it hard to believe that there was a good movie hidden in here given that the movie also featured Emo Spider-Man (uh oh, he's got an evil haircut now!).

Raimi takes the blame...kind of.. But it sounds like the studios forced him to add characters he didn't like, so he just didn't put much effort into the film. I consider Darkman and Spider-Man 2 to be two of the best superhero films ever made, so I tend to side with those who believe the studios are to blame.

You have to remember, the Eno Spider-Man was because of the symbiotic Venom suit. No suit, no Emo Spider-Man.

How can you have a Venom movie with no Spider-Man? Spidey is pretty much the reason for Venom's existence. And the trailer did not do it for me... guess we'll wait and see.

I can't decide. I think that if I just toss out everything that I've ever known about Venom and treat it strictly has a sci-fi movie.... Maybe it will be fun action? Just ignore anything to do with super heroes, etc.

I do like Tom Hardy.

Especially given how many good actors are in it.

I wonder who decided that the best way to show off Venom's powers is "rad motorcycle jump." That person should be fired.

The New Mutants movie trailer works for me because it's a drastic departure from the normal superhero film. It's a horror film through and through. Venom would be wise to follow that path, because even with the great Tom Hardy that trailer was kind of weak.

The world has enough superheroes. Watch the new #Venom trailer now. 10.5.18. One of Marvel's most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

How in God’s name did this make 80 million dollars and become the number one film on its opening weekend after almost every review was decidedly negative?

Saw it today with my Grandson.
We both enjoyed it.
A couple of laughs and they explained the origin story pretty well.
The end credit scene seemed totally tacked on and out of place.

I didn't get to see it this weekend, but I'm going to be hate-watching this at some point. I just don't like what Sony is doing with their Spider-Villains cinematic universe.

It has an 89% fan score on Rottentomatoes. Critics don't always speak for the masses (clearly).

In my experience the critics score is usually more reflective of what you should really expect if you're not a fanboy. Sure, I like some films with low critics scores and high audience ratings (I'm a fanboy for many things myself), but that number is significantly lower than those I think they got right.

In my experience, critics' scores are what you look at if you like to analyze films.

Fans' scores are what you look at if you like to watch films.

One is about technical merit. The other is about entertainment.

I was entertained enough by this film to find it enjoyable. Tom Hardy in particular is a delight. Lots of solid humor, particularly in the 2nd half of the film.

Fan scores are written by...wait for it...fans. They'll often accept horrible movies with dumb plots and glaring holes because...well...they're fans.

Battlefield Earth has its defenders. I still wouldn't call it entertaining. As I said, I love me some movies that get consistently horrible reviews. But I usually can understand why it got horrible reviews, and I recognize that I want to love it so I overlook those flaws. I'm not a Venom fanboy, so I don't want to shell out money to see a film that has such overwhelmingly bad reviews. If I were a fan, I might.

If you want to see Venom after seeing the reviews though, more power to you. Maybe they'll take the numerous complaints about the story to heart and craft a better sequel that can exist as a good movie on its own merits.

Yep. 11% vs 89% for Venom. And for what it's worth, I've found that the true fanboys tend to be more critical of films based on existing media than others.

My feelings are still that critics hold films to a different standard than normal people. Very few critics stop analyzing and looking for plot holes long enough to see if the movie is simply fun.
