There are a ton of Cubs at the All Star game.

(Granted, all but one are on the coaching staff, but that's just nitpicking.)

I also heard the Cubs are shopping for Fulmer. I offer the same deal. Take Cabrera, V Martinez, and Zimmerman and I don't even need to raid your prospects.

It was a valiant effort to take the loss to prevent Yadier Molina from potentially getting the MVP award. Wade Davis is now truly a Cub.

Big cross town trade today. The White Sox send pitcher Jose Quitana to the Cubs for 4 minor leaguers, including the top two Cubs' prospects (Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease). This makes a lot of sense for both clubs. The Cubs get a quality starter to bolster their rotation, and he's under team control until 2020. The White Sox get some really useful pieces for their rebuilding effort (who were not going to help the Cubs in the immediate future). I know Quintana has been having a bit of a down year, but I think his overall track record makes this worth it.

Interesting article on what's wrong with the Giants. The article is basically saying they don't hit enough home runs, and even with the entire team healthy, they aren't going to be able to compete in today's game. We know that home runs have taken over the game, and other than Posey the Giants don't have power hitters. Ergo they need to 'put a wrecking ball' to the team and reconstruct it to be competitive in 2018.

Of course it's all due to all the players taking steroids. I was wondering when this article was going to show up.

From what I heard from my Dad who read some other article, MLB is using a different ball this year. The seams are not as prominent (sticking out) which is causing blisters for Pitchers, and the ball is harder because of it, causing more HRs.

I think 538 did a piece saying the ball is likely a big part of the current trend.

Edit: Which is not to say players aren't still taking steroids. I think it very likely some population is definitely doing that.

Except it's a cheap shot. You can always say that. The author uses a convicted criminal to buttress his steroid argument and who knows what Conte is doing now under the table, it could be in his interests to make other players believe everyone except them are doing steroids.

Dodger stadium rarely has fog or even dense air anymore, it's nearly as dry as a desert. Analytics have added a lot of information on how to hit. The shift has made left handed hitters try to drive the ball high. Lots of reasons. I'm sorry that the baseball may be part of the issue because the blisters pitchers get are pretty nasty.

To cover up a rampant resurgence in PED use.

The danger to the brand is not so much the present -- those still on board after the last scandal likely don't care if the players are all gooped up on gop. Hell, I understand the Tour de France still has viewers and every one of them is chemically enhanced in some way.

The problem is more with cultivating the next generation of fans. When I was a kid, we idolized sports icons and played sports with the hope we could be like them. More and more parents I think will actively dissuade their children as more doping scandals come to light, and eventually they'll stop feeding the system by not allowing the kids to play these sports in the first place for fears that they may become pharmaceutical dumping grounds.

Since the young ones have no proof that the pro's are using, I don't know that young person use of steroids can be blamed on the pros. Yes, they've had like three bannings out of over 1,000 players, but that's not indicative of a widespread problem per se.

Manfred (the Commish) says they aren't juiced, fivethirtyeight says they are. Juiced balls would not have anything to do with steroid use, they are an alternative explanation.

If the ball is juiced as fivethirtyeight says, the ball's not taking steroids, so that seems plausible to me.

Kind of fitting that they can't even get a bobblehead right. I'm so out of the loop on this season. To watch how this team is run like shit year to year has started to make me just ignore the sport entirely.

I mean holy shit half the team gets hurt every season and they don't even question if MAYBE there's something wrong with their training staff. Football teams have less injuries than the Mets. And then we have David Wright who f'n refuses to retire. I get it, he's getting paid, but the Mets act like he's somehow part of the teams plans. What so he can come back for 2 weeks and be out another season?

http://www.mlive.com/tigers/index.ssf/2 ... _avil.html

The analysts all say this was a fair trade. I don't buy it. We have a young 3rd baseman already and Wilson is an absolute Gem. Probably the second strongest piece (inclusive of his youth) on the team after Michael Fulmer. But having no relief pitching appears to be our thing.

Add the crappy value they got for JD Martinez and Avila chasing away people sniffing at Verlander and I'm hoping

1) Avila is replaced at the close of the season.
2) Chris Illitch doesn't renew Ausmus contract. (He should have been let go at the end of his second season)
3) When they find a replacement Chris Illitch is hand off operations.

Even then it's going to be a long damned time until you get Cabrera, Verlander, Victor Martinez off the books, all terrible terrible terrible signings (even if Verlander has bounced back, which is why you should have let him go when teams came sniffing)

I think the Tigers could renew interest in the team if they let us watch some young players "grow up" together and quite frankly bench or extended DL a chunk of their veterans but I that does not appear to be on Illitches' plate.

Anyhoo, ILB should be happy with Tigers about now.
