“You are paddleboarding next to approximately 15 great white sharks,” Deputy Brian Stockbridge announced via a loudspeaker.

Stockbridge was in a helicopter, flying off the coast of Dana Point in Orange County, Calif., at about 2 p.m. local time on Wednesday. And, indeed, swimming in the Pacific Ocean below and clearly visible from the air, were several great white sharks. Their fins rose menacingly from the water as they glided back and forth.

No one was hurt, and OC Lifeguards Chief Jason Young said the situation wasn’t dire enough to call for an ocean closure, which only occurs when the sharks are more than 8 feet long or acting aggressively.

Hollywood has taught me that being a shark is "acting aggressively" though. How could they possibly make that an either/or statement?

Then we watch a documentary where the film makers are petting and rubbing wild sharks, and the sharks are responding like dogs and coming back for more affection. I'm sure it was cool and everything, but the next diver that shark sees won't know the protocol and may act incorrectly when the shark swims right at him.

That would almost certainly be my last time paddle boarding, possibly because my heart would stop right then and there.

The ocean closures don't do anything anyway. People ignore them and go into the water all the time. Would I do it? Hell no. But lots do.

Missed opportunity by the Sheriff's Dept.. Could have not warned them and kept filming right up through the sharks lunchtime.. Think of the hits their video would have gotten.

I thought this was going to be one of those fun facts type things. You know, like the average household contains hundred of different species of insects, or your odds of dying from bird flu is roughly equal to your chances of being killed by an enraged Benicio del Toro.

Yes.. Sharks up to 7 feet, 11 inches are safe. Be thankful it is not your job to go in the water to measure them.
