Vehicle plows into pedestrians in Times Square

Post by LawBeefaroni »

Just heard on RTE talk. Not sure if it's accidental or intentional.

What are the odds it's another elderly, confused driver; or a drunken fool?
He won. Period.

Remember when it used to be kind of a meme? "Elderly driver plows into farmers market" ... a tragedy. Now we hear about it and cringe, expecting deliberate terror attacks. I miss our innocence.

The car is perched partially sideways, smashed against a lamp post. CNN is saying the car was speeding (as tricky as that would be in NYC traffic in the middle of a weekday). No word yet on whether this was intentional.

Initial reports suggesting it's a DWI situation, not terror.

It got a whole episode of South Park.

A witness told Yahoo News that after the car came to a halt on the sidewalk, the driver attempted to flee on foot before being apprehended. Video taken by a witness and posted to Instagram shortly after the crash showed police taking a person into custody.

They are now pretty sure that this was a case of drunk driving, not a terrorist act.

The Mackinac Bridge Authority voted unanimously Tuesday to close the bridge to all traffic during the annual Labor Day bridge walk in September.

The bridge will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to noon to all traffic, leaving an estimated 4,000 drivers stranded on either side of the bridge on one of the busiest traffic days of the year.

The action was taken at the request of the Michigan State Police and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which are responding to threats posed by terrorists using vehicles to plow into crowds to inflict the most possible damage

No, that story says that he has a history of DUIs, but that he blew 0 on a breathalyzer.

Hmm sounds like he might have been high on drugs. Seems like an awesome human being. One site was kind enough to show the person that was killed. :(

Said he had been arrested for drunk driving in 2008 and 2015. Dumb bastard. Now he killed someone.

Apparently on PCP.
Rojas passed a breathalyzer test, but an initial test came up positive for PCP and marijuana. A source tells CBS News the suspect claimed to have heard voices, wanted to die, and did it for god.
He has told police he wanted to kill people. Not an accident.

He may not have been drunk but driving under the influence or driving while impaired covers far more than just alcohol.
It seems clear that this is a guy who was mentally unstable and drug dependent, who finally snapped.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?
