Miss the place

Post by Tareeq »

I only ever internet on Twitter now, but had a stupid dream about internet foruming back in the decade gone by last night. Didn't write the dream down, but this is probably the forum I had in mind. Glad to see the place is still operational.

Yes, once in a blue moon I dream about the internet. Mock at will.

We miss you too. The NK twitter feed can be fun, but it's not enough. If you ever want to chat gaming, we're here for you!

There's just something engaging yet intimate about a forum I find. As others have posited before, it seems rare to find a community of this size that's largely kept on despite a general lack of new membership.

Mrs. Nym is big into Twitter, but I've always found it extremely unwieldy for community-based communication.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Great to see a familiar digital face again; welcome back!

And yes, relative to Twitter, OO remains a rare safe haven of sagacity amidst a yawning apocalypse of knob-headed chuffwittery.

Can we mock you for this? :)

Good to see you are still out there on the interpipes.
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

You can never go home, or something.
wot?

To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?

Unless one loses a precious thing, he will never know its true value. A little light finally scratches the darkness; it lets the exhausted one face his shattered dream and realize his path cannot be walked. Can man live happily without embracing his wounded heart?

Somebody go find SJGG

"I don't know," Snufkin replied.

I dream about the internet once in a while. Once I dreamed about back when I was a teenager except the internet existed. It changed everything. Then at some point I realized "Hey, the internet wasn't around at this time" and poof, the dream was over.

Twitter only huh? I feel left behind.

That's because at 140 characters, Twitter is designed for people with nothing to say (sorry Tareeq, you pitched a softball and someone had to hit it).

Reddit strikes me as the unfocused evolution of forums/BBs combined with the quick access and bite-sized exchanges of Twitter. A network of message boards anyone can create is what ezboard and probably others attempted in the late 90s but the infrastructure never really evolved. Yet I find Reddit still lacks the feeling of a true community like an enclosed forum.

You're right, that's probably more accurate. I just never really used Usenet, so it didn't come to mind. That said, it seems that Reddit has largely displaced modern BBSs as well. Which isn't an entirely bad thing since it's hard for a small one to survive, I suppose.

alt.rec.games.strategy.derek.smart.die.die.die had a lot of members. Back in the day when one downloaded new messages and then uploaded one's replies, I quickly learned to filter out "derek" "smart" and multiple variations on battlecruiser 3k.
