It's a wonderful life.

No man is a failure who has friends (despite what George hates about the staircase banister in his house and the steamer trunk suitcase he never gets to use.

Since Unagi tea-leafed my prior answer, I'll go with some classic film-noir: Sunset Boulevard, which won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Black-and-White) in 1950.

Though I do have to admit that "based on a novel or short story" is rather incompatible with the "documentary" card as one is based on fact and the other fiction. For Hearts of Darkness, I'm kind of trying to marry the two by going with a documentary about the making of a movie based upon a short story, but it was the best I could do.

From Jesus to Christ - The First Christians

wherein the gospels are the short stories the documentary is indeed based upon.

(excellent documentary, btw)

Definitely a tricky combo, given that a novel is essentially a long written story about imaginary people and events.

Still, Battlefield Earth may well fit the bill (as Scientologists likely consider it to be a documentary of sorts, particularly in light of the book upon which it was based).

I haven't chimed in up to now because I would have started too far behind, but I had to submit this:

Jodorowsky's Dune - a documentary about the Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky's attempt to make a Dune movie in the 70's.
I spent 90% of the money I made on women, booze, and drugs. The other 10% I just pissed away.

It's really the only thing I could think of that comes close, other than possibly The Death of "Superman Lives" - What Happened?
