Saw that. The assumption is that they've been gathering up Kim's missile parts.

Heh. Sub returns with mysterious "we did something" sign on the side of it.

Congrats sub. It's nice to know you're not just pleasure cruising around.

Is that a giant dent/crack on its side?

Could be were some corrosion damage was repaired or perhaps a spot that was cut open for access working on masts and welded back up. The entire sail structure is free flooding/less thick than the pressure hull and it often takes a beating on certain operations.

Notice how the area just forward of the bridge has lost paint and is rusty. They have been out for awhile.

Betting the pirate flag is riff on flying a broom.....which started in WW2 as an indicator of a very successful patrol/mission. I was fortunate enough to be on two missions where we had the broom prominently displayed as we pulled into the pier.

Jimmy Carter is also the only specially outfitted spec ops submarine.....so I am sure they were just out on a routine training mission ;) and felt the training went well.

Rip's article explains where the tradition of a sub flying the jolly roger started. i.e. a british sub did it this one time, and it has been done off and on ever since.

Thanks for the link. That was an interesting article.
Well do you ever get the feeling that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and it seems like you're the only person sitting in the audience?

it seems to be mainly a PAC fleet thing and maybe a spec ops boat thing specifically. In the Atlantic it was, or it least in my time, it was the broom which comes from WW2 sub tradition.

I was reading a different article on that site... Sub-launched anti-air missile.

Which just got me thinking...

If you can launch a buoy...

Can you just pop out a buoy-sized container that can float to near the surface, get some final targeting data like data link or VLF signal (or laser?), and the missile will pop-out and turn toward the target like VLS?

I'd imagine you can put up a Stinger like that, except the initial launch motor can be bigger (exhaust is not a problem in this case) and it needs some initial steering.

EDIT: It already exists! :)

I guess this is as good a place as any for this.

Or maybe it should go in Console Gaming?
