NHL 2017-18 Season

Post by pr0ner »

The NHL season is finally upon us, with opening night on Wednesday.

And in the best possible way to start this thread, the Calgary Flames are about to sign Jaromir Jagr to a 1-year deal. Can't wait to watch him play with Johnny Gaudreau.

Golden Knights come to Dallas on Friday. I need to find a good sports bar that will let me have audio.

Hockey isn't popular enough in Dallas to have audio in sports bar? You guys have a good team too I'd expect people to watch the games.

ALDS game 2s, NLDS game 1s. No Mavericks game, thankfully, but still eight NBA games on.

Avs vs. Rangers season opener has every potential to devolve into a brawl at the rate they are going. But at least it's some exciting hockey...from the Avalanche, no less.

They said before the game he would be on the ice for one shift. I wasn't paying close attention though to see if that ever happened.

From his interview on Sirius/XM this morning, it sounded like he only dressed for warmups.

Could be. It still would have been awesome to arrange it once it became clear Pittsburgh had no intention of getting in the way of pucks flying toward the net.

I'd look for Witkowski to get suspended 10 games for his antics during the Flames vs. Red Wings game tonight. Coming back onto the ice after starting to make his way down the tunnel to the dressing room after already getting a 10-minute misconduct is a real bad move.

Didn't watch the third period (MHS was just getting back from her trip to Oklahoma), but I'm not surprised the game devolved into goonery.

The Hawks are doing a tribute for some ex-players by having them put on the skates for "One More Shift". What it actually is is the player skates out after the team introductions and before the Anthem and does a lap around the ice. It's a nice gesture, but has absolutely nothing to do with actually playing, although we certainly could have used Secord back on the ice last week after his One More Shift lap......

Witkowski actually started it all - he wanted a fight with Brett Kulak after he rubbed a Red Wing out. After Witkowski won the fight, he started slamming Kulak against the ice. Travis Hamonic came over and said something, and Witkowski went after him (refs held him back).

As Witkowski was on his way to the dressing room (he got a 10 minute misconduct for his actions in the fight), Matthew Tkachuk gave him a love tap (Detroit commentators' words) on the ankle to hurry him along just as he was leaving. Witkowski stopped, turned around, and wound up back on the ice to go after Tkachuk (who somehow got a spearing major; I never did see him spear anyone). Then Hamonic and Mantha went at it, and eventually Hamonic fell into the walkway to the tunnel with Mantha on top of him, and Mantha apparently kept hitting Hamonic, as he was bloody when he finally got up. Mantha got 2 10 minute misconducts out of that fray himself.

Witkowski is getting 10 games for coming back onto the ice.

Tkachuk has a hearing with the NHL tomorrow about his supplemental discipline.

Holy crap. My Canucks entire top line and four of the five top scorers are out with injury (Boeser, Horvat, Baertschi, Dorsett - who is permanently out). Not to mention two top 6 defencemen (Tanev and Gudbranson) plus another top 3 centre (Sutter).

Wow. Ever heard of a team losing their entire top line to injury? Horvat and Baertschi are both out 4-6 weeks! This is nuts. They were a spunky borderline playoff team before, but now? Tom Petty put it best, Free Fallin' baby, Free Fallin'.

The Blackhawks had to play their emergency goalie yesterday, a 36-year-old accountant. He did well! 14 minutes on the ice, no goals allowed.

I know it's not NHL related per se but tonight is a hard night in the province here. A junior team's bus was sideswiped but a semi killing the coach and possibly 14 more. Happened northeast of Regina and the hockey world and this province is devastated. This was the Humboldt Broncos team bus.

Word is the semi blew the stop sign at the intersection of the highways. Fluid at this time.

These are 16 to 19 or 20 year olds I believe.

GoFundMe for those affected

I'm not sure how you survive this I've never been so happy to not be at work today.

The stupidest streak
D.C. sports fans of a certain ilk will release one of the longest, deepest and most liberating exhalations of their lifetimes, thrilled beyond belief that one of the stupidest streaks in sports is finally over. That streak, of course, is the 20-year stretch during which the Caps, Nats, Redskins and Wizards all failed to advance to the final four of their sports, a stretch unmatched by any similar city and one that now occupies undue space inside all of our heads.

If you're a fan of any other team in the league (excepting Pittsburgh, maybe) and you've suffered for years without your team achieving that ultimate success, how on earth can you root for Vegas and their none-suffering fans to achieve that dream they've had of winning the Cup for what? The last ten minutes?

If you have ties to the city or state or if you don't already have a primary team to root for, then the Vegas wins the Cup scenario is awesome. But the rest of us have to be on team Ovi (and stigginit to Crosby), don't we?. Even though MAF and Gerard Gallant's system is obviously going to crush the Caps in a seven game series, don't we all have to (futility) be on board with rooting against the anti-Cubs here?

Maybe this is the bitter angst of the guy who moved to Colorado on Memorial day weekend 1996 coming through, but man I can't see living through that situation again.
