MHS! What I want to say would be long and rambling (despite getting broken into paragraphs for easier reading). To sum it up, I've very happy for you and Meal and the rest of the family. I'll reach out to you to chat about other things you might find helpful coming in the days ahead. xoxo

May 23 is The Big Day. Scary how fast they move once the approvals are done. This time next month I’ll have 3 kidneys and hopefully be on my way to a healthier, longer future.

First, Congrats! I hope it all works out. I had a neighbor who had a transplant. She's is doing awesome. It was rough at first with the meds, but now, she is strong as ever. I hope that's the same for you (minus the sick part)

Second, help me understand.

When you get a transplant, you keep your existing kidneys, even if they are not working correctly? I always thought they just remove the bad kidney and replace with the donated one.

To remove an existing kidney would take it from a 4 hour surgery with only a tiny incision to a 12 hour surgery where they have to cut from breastbone to pubic bone and since my kidney function is so low, they don't think I'm healthy enough to handle that. So, they'll just shove it into my lower abdomen and hook it up. They might go back in a year or so when I'm presumably healthier and then remove one of the bad ones.

Several of you have asked, and I was resistant, but here it is: https://www.gofundme.com/support-shanno ... transplant

I figure if these https://www.gofundme.com/new-sailing-life two doofuses who sunk their boat (pretty much 2 days in after not really having sailed before) could raise $16k+, then I couldn't tell my co-worker that setting one up for me was ridiculous.*

*Disclaimer: they probably aren't really doofuses, they are probably very nice people who are just following their dreams. I am too, my dream is not dying anytime soon. :)

Thank you. I'm planning to tattoo a nipple onto the lump created by the third kidney and make it into a third boob, so I have that going for me.

Well, tomorrow is the day. The fun kicks off at 5:30 am MDT. Last week I was in Baltimore for work and I flew back with Carmen, my donor, who was in my training that day. It was a bit surreal. Pre-op stuff all went great.

The surgeon says there won't be a bulge, that the kidney gets placed in the pelvic bowl (Neal says he's dying to see the shoes you wear to go there) and that it will just "blend" which I think is his way of saying I'm already lumpy. We shall see.

I'm sure Neal or my mom or someone will post an update after surgery tomorrow. Thanks for all the love and support along the way. We've been really floored by how supportive our village has been, and you guys are a huge part of that. It would all look very different if we weren't surrounded by love and positivity. Thank you.

With 3 kidneys I hope you at least win a pissing contest in the future. :)

Best wish and prayers. Everything will be fine but Ill do it to be redundant anyways. Always good to make a backup of important things...like MHS.

Praying for a efficient and successful surgery with quick recovery for both donor and recipient.
It's 109 first team All-Americans.
It's a college football record 61 bowl appearances.
It's 34 bowl victories.
It's 24 Southeastern Conference Championships.
It's 15 National Championships.

At some places they play football. At Alabama we live it.

Silly question.....will the third kidney increase urine production a good bit or will it bring it up to normal levels?
