It wad only mildly annoying for me. Drive in this morning sucked but th drive home was fine.

Re: 2017-18 Winter Storm thread
Cleanup only took a little over an hour because it's powdery snow. Difficult to call thanks to drifting, but I'd say we got a little over a foot. Now we hunker down for two days of arctic temperatures. Grayson was a significant storm, but not one for the history books...although I hear there was some serious coastal flooding and parts of Boston are under water.

Re: 2017-18 Winter Storm thread
Spent about an hour snow-blowing, but it's still coming down so I'm gonna have to revisit the issue later tonight before all this crap freezes. I conservatively estimate a foot and a half. Best part is the four-foot barrier at the edge of the driveway where the plow guy dutifully does his best to isolate the driveways from the road. I had to work pretty hard on that one. On the plus side, the little twerp had fun jumping around and knocking snow off the cars.

Re: 2017-18 Winter Storm thread
I spent a little more than an hour snowblowing 8-10 inches off my driveway...was a balmy 22 with 30+ mph winds, putting the windchill somewhere south of zero. The best part? Wind is still howling, so I'll be back outside at 4am to reopen the drifts before work in the morning...when it's even colder...

You could say that. This pic is of the Gloucester High School stadium on the North Shore just up the coast from where I used to live:

The wind chill here in Ottawa is hitting -40 today, which puts it in that sweet spot where it doesn't matter much whether you're talking Fahrenheit or Celsius.

Re: 2017-18 Winter Storm thread
Just got out of storm lock down at work. 2 1/2 days, which was no fun. Unfortunately I had the bad luck to pull storm team for the last two winter storms we've had, and both of those wound up being among the longest lock downs we've had.
Our town got 3.5 inches, which was enough to close schools for 3 days. Such is the South.
The roads are still pretty bad - I was actually surprised they let us go, but by day 3 with no shower I would have chanced anything to get home.

Shoveled my car out last night and then my neighbor came by to tell me to go inside and he'd snowblow the rest of the driveway and both sidewalks. Win.

Yesterday we had about 5 inches of snow. I went out to dig out my car, but the wind had been whipping so hard all day that the snow was cleared off of anything above ground level.
Streets and yards were blanketed, but all the cars were completely clean. It was weird.

Re: 2017-18 Winter Storm thread
We've had a couple of inches twice this year. It takes me 45 minutes to shovel that little bit off my driveway and sidewalk. I can't imagine how long it will take should we ever get a real snowfall here again.
I can ensure we don't get any real snowfalls simply by buying a snowblower. It worked once upon a time when we bought one as a gift for my dad (as if he ever lifted a finger shoveling...he had kids!) -- we then went more than 3 years without a significant snowfall. When we finally did, the thing didn't work because sitting idle for 3 years apparently wasn't good for it.
On one hand, I miss snow shoveling being my primary form of winter exercise. On the other, with a 45 minute - 1 hour drive to work, I don't miss driving in it, that's for sure!

Re: 2017-18 Winter Storm thread
I'm glad I admitted that I was getting too old to shovel and bought a snowblower four or five years ago, because now I really am too old. My left arm lost some functionality several months ago. It still works okay as long as I don't put a load on it, but I just plain can't lift and throw a shovel full of snow anymore.Jeff V wrote: βFri Jan 05, 2018 2:26 pmWe've had a couple of inches twice this year. We have cafeterias and shower facilities on the work campus. Heck there are even a couple game consoles, ping pong tables, foosball tables, four way air hockey tables... being stuck at work doesn't totally suck here.YellowKing wrote: βFri Jan 05, 2018 1:04 pm The roads are still pretty bad - I was actually surprised they let us go, but by day 3 with no shower I would have chanced anything to get home.

Re: 2017-18 Winter Storm thread
My dad gave me a hard hat insulated liner with a chin strap (doesn't cover eyes or mouth) and I have to say it was pretty damn good. Really held the heat in on my neck and ears, mainly because it was flared at the neck and you could tuck it under your jacket. It almost reminded me of the padded skull cap I used to wear under my helmet in the SCA (an arming cap). Anyway, this thing was almost too warm, but having a covering for your face would be kinda nice in certain situations.

I like in windy -7 weather with windchill of stupid, where the snow blower is blowing the snow back in your face, no matter who many scarves and TShirts you have wrapped around your face because eyeholes.

If I suddenly found myself jobless, I'd certainly start looking there. Otherwise, getting the wife to move would be a hard sell. It didn't help that the one time I took her to visit you decided to welcome us with a late spring blizzard that put a huge damper on the awesomeness I'd hoped to show her.Xmann wrote: βThu Jan 11, 2018 9:56 pmcome and join us Jeff. good place to raise the kiddos. although housing is ridiculous the past couple years.Jeff V wrote:Xmann's 'hood is probably among the top 3 I'd consider if ever I was exiled from the paradise that is Chicago.
