Approved 2018 playing rules

5. By Competition Committee: Eliminates the requirement that a team who scores a winning touchdown at the end of regulation of a game to kick the extra point or go for two-point conversion.
Will be interesting if this figures into a points scored tiebreak.
I doubt this happens often enough to be worth considering. Losing a tie breaker because you failed to get an extra point or two after a walk-off TD is no different really than losing a tie breaker because at some point during the season you kicked a field goal on 4th-and-1 instead of going for it.

The Washington Redskins could/should be in some trouble if this report is accurate:
For the photo shoot, at the adults-only Occidental Grand Papagayo resort on Culebra Bay, some of the cheerleaders said they were required to be topless, though the photographs used for the calendar would not show nudity. Others wore nothing but body paint. Given the resort’s secluded setting, such revealing poses would not have been a concern for the women — except that (Washington) had invited spectators.

A contingent of sponsors and FedEx Field suite holders — all men — were granted up-close access to the photo shoots.

After the shoot, the report alleges nine of the 36 cheerleaders were chosen by male sponsors to be personal escorts at a nightclub that night:

“So get back to your room and get ready,” the director told them. Several of them began to cry.

“They weren’t putting a gun to our heads, but it was mandatory for us to go,” one of the cheerleaders said. “We weren’t asked, we were told. Other girls were devastated because we knew exactly what she was doing.”

Their participation did not involve sex, the cheerleaders said, but they felt as if the arrangement amounted to “pimping us out.”
Did I mention the Redskins collected the cheerleaders' passports when they got to Costa Rica?

Also, they weren't paid for this work trip, beyond comping travel expenses. Honestly, I never realized how horribly shitty the NFL teams treat their cheerleaders.

MNF
When Monday Night Football kicks off its 49th season this fall, ESPN will unveil a new broadcast team featuring play-by-play voice Joe Tessitore, analysts Jason Witten and Booger McFarland, and reporter Lisa Salters.

Tessitore and Witten will be in the booth, while McFarland will bring a new perspective to the games each week as the first field-level analyst for sports television's signature series.

Tessitore, Witten, McFarland and Salters will make their regular-season debut when the Oakland Raiders host the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, Sept. 10, in the late game of ESPN's season-opening doubleheader at 10:15 p.m. ET.

The game also features the return to the NFL sidelines for former ESPN MNF analyst and current Raiders coach Jon Gruden.

Reuben Foster appears to be in the clear by a mile:
We now have an update in the current Reuben Foster saga.

During preliminary hearings for the Foster's domestic violence case on Thursday, his ex-girlfriend, Elissa Ennis, took the stand, where she admitted she lied about the entire incident after they broke up.

BREAKING: Reuben Foster’s ex-girlfriend takes the stand in prelim for domestic violence case, says she made the whole thing up after he broke up with her
— Evan Sernoffsky (@EvanSernoffsky) May 17, 2018

Ennis told the court that she did not expect the charges to go this far, as it was just a "money scheme."

Reuben Foster’s ex-girlfriend Elissa Ennis testifies:
“It was all a money scheme. I didn’t want to get this far in the news. It was about money.”
She fled home to Louisiana after Foster arrested 2/11 and she took with her Foster’s money and jewelry which is in a safe deposit box
— Cam Inman (@CamInman) May 17, 2018

The admission does not come as a surprise, as Ennis was expected to reveal that she lied to police about her injuries. Reports indicate that she actually received the injuries in a fight with another woman, not from Foster. In fact, Ennis admitted she hit Foster in rage, where she threatened to ruin his career.

Kaepernick's collusion case appears to be going well:
the ongoing collusion case is establishing that multiple teams viewed Kaepernick as a starting NFL quarterback in 2017, and that they continue to view him that way. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, internal franchise documents generated as part of the free-agency evaluation process and testimony from witnesses harvested via depositions in the collusion litigation has established that teams viewed Kaepernick as being good enough not simply to be employed by an NFL team, but to be a starting quarterback for an NFL team...

...Whether coordination can or can’t be proven, the collusion case will conclusively prove one thing, regardless of whether anyone wants to believe it: Multiple teams believed that Colin Kaepernick was still good enough to play after becoming a free agent more than a year ago. Which means that, at least as to Kaepernick, the notion that teams make decisions based only on trying to win football games doesn’t hold water.

I'd say that depends entirely upon which teams viewed him as a viable starter. For instance, if the Patriots viewed him as a starter they still wouldn't be signing him due to not needing him, etc. For a team to sign him means they view him as a potential starter and a good fit for their needs. Given the comments from Houston's ownership I think we can safely conclude that if they viewed him as a starter they didn't hire him for non-football reasons but did they view him as a starter is the question. Did they view him as viable at all is what matters.

I'm sure there is some collusion going on, but while I respect Kapernick's right to free expression, I also respect the owners' right to avoid disruption. Can you imagine how long someone would last in an office setting if they started pushing Jehovah's Witness on everyone.

I for one totally don't get the reactions to the kneeling (or should I say overreactions). People just go crazy. Stop watching the NFL just because of this? Come on. To me it doesn't matter if you agree with them or not, it amazes me how unwilling people are to even look at someone who has a different opinion then themselves.

I golf a lot and these topics come up over drinks after the rounds. I know many people who are very upset over the kneeling and think all players who kneel should be fired on the spot. Funny thing is when Phil Robertson (aka the Duck Commander) had his show in jeopardy after stating some political opinions these exact same people were on the opposite side of the fence saying it was ridiculous that he should be fired and all said almost word for word "what ever happened to free speech in this country!?" Too many people only like the idea of free speech when they agree with it. Anyone willing to take a bet on how many of the loudest complainers would flip sides if the kneeling had started to protest a christian religious belief like abortion?

Hmm, that post should prob go in R&P.

Except even without Kaepernick playing, most teams had players kneeling. And it’s not like all those players were kicked off the team. So it seems to me even the distraction argument is a little bogus; not hiring Kap seems more like the owners wanting to punish him for starting the kneeling in the first place.

Because nothing says "patriotism" quite like ordering people under penalty of a fine to stand up during the National Anthem, the taxpayer-soaking cajillionaires who run the National Football League have announced a new policy of fining any team caught having an employee sitting, kneeling, or acting disrespectfully on the field while "The Star-Spangled Banner" plays before a game.

"We want people to be respectful of the national anthem," explained NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "We want people to stand...and make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That's something we think we owe. [But] we were also very sensitive to give players choices."

ESPN
NFL owners have unanimously approved a new national anthem policy that requires players to stand if they are on the field during the performance but gives them the option to remain in the locker room if they prefer, it was announced Wednesday.

The policy subjects teams to a fine if a player or any other team personnel do not show respect for the anthem. That includes any attempt to sit or kneel, as dozens of players have done during the past two seasons to protest racial inequality and police brutality. Those teams will also have the option to fine any team personnel, including players, for the infraction.
...
All 32 owners approved the policy, which will be part of the NFL's game operations manual and thus not subject to collective bargaining. The NFL Players Association said in a statement that it will review the policy and "challenge any aspect" that is inconsistent with the CBA.

San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York, however, said he abstained from Wednesday's vote on the new policy. He didn't say he opposed the policy, nor would reveal if any other team abstained.

Richie Incognito
Boca Raton Police say that former Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins player Richie Incognito was involved in a disturbance at the Lifetime Gym on Yamato Road Wednesday morning.

Police said Incognito was involuntarily committed under Florida's Baker Act.
...
Incognito reportedly threw a dumbbell at a man at the gym and that's why police were called, according to TMZ.com.

Incognito played for the Buffalo Bills last season.

In the buildup to the draft, he took a restructured contract with the Bills, publicly fired his agent on Twitter after that deal was signed, and retired shortly after that. The Bills officially added him to the reserve/retired list on April 12.

Once Organized Team Activities started around the league, Incognito -- according to ESPN -- wanted to make a return to the NFL, despite retiring from the league and team just one month prior. The Bills granted his reported wish, releasing him off the reserve/retired list on Monday.

The move officially made Incognito an unrestricted free agent, able to be signed by any other team.

Julian Edelman to be suspended for PEDs?
New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances, league sources told ESPN on Thursday.

The suspension is currently under appeal as Edelman has taken "hundreds of tests" and has not tested positive before, a source told ESPN.

NBC
The NFL’s new rules designed to reduce the impacts on kickoffs represent a last-gasp effort to keep the play in the sport.

That’s the word from former head of officiating Mike Pereira, who believes that if this year’s rule changes don’t result in the desired reduction in kickoffs, the NFL will just abolish the play entirely.
WaPo
The proposal being formulated Wednesday bans players on the kicking team from getting a running start on their way downfield. It eliminates all forms of “wedge” blocking, where multiple blockers link together, by the receiving team. It requires eight of the 11 members of the receiving team to line up within 15 yards of the spot of the kickoff and bars hitting within those 15 yards. It keeps players on the kicking team from going in motion pre-kick.
...
The competition committee’s proposal does not incorporate the new college rule that allows the receiving team to get a touchback for a fair catch of a kickoff anywhere inside its own 25-yard line.

The committee’s plan will not include the proposal made by the NFL special teams coaches that a touchback on a kickoff would be placed at the 20-yard line, rather than at the 25, if the football goes through the uprights on the kickoff. That was designed to encourage teams to kick the ball deep into the end zone rather than drop high, short kickoffs inside the 5-yard line but shy of the goal line.
...
[Green Bay Packers President Mark] Murphy called the kickoff “by far the most dangerous play in the game.” The injury data shows, he said, that players are five times more likely to suffer a concussion on a kickoff than on a play from the line of scrimmage. According to McKay, there were 71 concussions suffered by players on kickoffs over the past three seasons.
...
The NFL previously eliminated wedge blocking involving more than two members of the receiving team lined up side by side. This proposal would get rid of even the two-man wedge.

A wedge breaks up that which is hitting it. If a line of defenders hits those two linked guys, they form a wedge around which the defenders must flow (or go through I guess).

Schnatter was on a call with marketing agency Laundry Service when he tried to downplay comments he made about the National Football League and allegedly said, “Colonel Sanders called blacks n-----s," and complained that the KFC founder never faced public backlash. The call was a role-playing exercise for Schnatter to prevent future public relations fumbles.

Todd Hayley is the OC - I'm not sure I like him as a person, but I bet he could lead. Gregg Williams is the DC - not impressive. Full of bluster but never his fault.

Todd Hayley is the OC - I'm not sure I like him as a person, but I bet he could lead. Gregg Williams is the DC - not impressive. Full of bluster but never his fault.
It's not at all shocking to me that Hue Jackson is 1-31 as a head coach.

What is shocking is that he's still employed.

I'm pretty sure he won more games in Oakland

I forgot he coached in Oakland for a year. He started 7-4, and is 2-35 since then. Overall he’s 9-39. How he has a job still is mystifying to me.
