Off to a crappy start! On the positive side, holiday-related caloric insults are over and it's supposed to warm up late this week, so I should at least be able to stabilize.

Yeah, it's above freezing now and I'll probably do a lunchtime walk today and most of the week. Hopefully this plague has finally jumped the shark and I can become a little more active...I can't count on a depressed appetite to carry me in the right direction for another week.

I changed my weigh in dates from Friday to Sunday because that's how the Yunmai app that I use handles all of the data. I would like to have seen bigger losses over the first week, but I'm not going to complain as long as I keep trending in the right direction.

Not going to weight in until Monday but have been doing pretty well on eating and exercising. Got back to the Couch to 5K and completed two of those runs. Have been incorporating at least one vegetarian meal a day, and trying to stay away from sugar.

Feeling pretty confident I'll be back around my pre-holiday weight gain status by the end of March.

After a scary spike over 194 last week I've bent the curve back in the right direction. Challenging to keep it that way while winter persists. I've had to abandon two pairs of jeans that won't button anymore, so that's a strong motivator.

My normal pants are 36, my fat pants are 38, my skinny pants are 34. I am on the verge of bursting out of my normal pants. I got rid of all my fat pants the last time I lost weight and I refuse to buy new ones, so it's either lose weight or go naked.

I'm going in the wrong direction! The last two weeks were not good. Some stressful times lead to emotional eating. I know I'll be eating some non-friendly foods this weekend with the Super Bowl so I'm just trying to minimize the damage until the next weigh-in.

I have been bad about exercising the last two weeks, but the results have still been good, even if I did see a small uptick in my weight at the end of January. I'm encouraged that my body fat percentage has slowly been dropping each week, and I'm actually losing fat, not muscle. To date I've lost 3.9 pounds from my total weight, and 4.4 pounds of fat.

So maybe I missed it, but how do you calculate fat?

Neck and Waist size are how they used to do body fat when I was in the Navy. I have a large neck, always have, so it always struck me as an odd way to calculate it.

There are multiple ways to measure fat with various degrees of accuracy. The easiest is to get a device that sends an electrical pulse through your body. That's what I use. My digital scale gives me both my weight and body fat percentage. It's not super accurate however. There are other methods that can give you a very accurate body fat percentage, but you can't do them at home and they can be expensive to get done.

Alright, I'm back in this year after (I think) 5 years off. Have slowly crept up over those years to 175 from ~150-155 in 2012. Shooting to get back there this year. Signed myself up for a half-marathon in late June that I plan to take seriously for the first time in a few years. Figured I'd make this public as further motivation against backsliding.

Plan: do a little better a lot of the time, and a lot better a little of the time. Slightly tightening up my average lunch/breakfast while still ignoring dinner. Started half-marathon training plan 2 1/2 weeks ago. Signed up for lead-in 5k/10k/10M in April/May.

Now to remember to come back here and update...

Good luck, all!

Figured I better officially put my stake in the ground here. I'm at the "lose weight or buy new pants" stage, which is unacceptable. So I'm going to start this radical new diet called "For the love of God, stop shoveling garbage into your face all goddamn day." It's mostly just not being an idiot about what I eat, cutting out soda (the toughest part), reaching for an apple instead of Cheetos, avoiding the candy dish at work, not eating a bowl of queso dip every night while I game, etc.

So far, it's going well. Already down 5 lbs in the first week.

Mostly, this is just getting back to eating healthy. In early February, I eliminated all added sugars and simple carbs - except the very rare treat. My activity levels are the same. I'm just not stuffing myself with sugar and bread/pasta on a daily basis. Over the weekend I ate an entire pineapple and it felt decadent, but only clocks in at just under 500 calories.

Most of my meals are pulled from this list:
  • 1 cup Old Fashioned Oatmeal with raw 3/4 cup Blueberries and 1/3 cup walnuts, 1/8tsp salt; ~600 calories
  • 4 fried eggs, runny yolks, cooked in canola oil; ~500 calories
  • Large, nut-filled salad. Kale, spinach, arugula, bell pepper, radish, cabbage, 2 slices provolone, cherry tomatoes, Spanish olives, shaved carrot, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pecans, Bacon Bits (they're made of soy!), Salad Toppins mix, Ms. Dash seasoning, italian dressing; ~800-~1000 calories? Hard to gauge.
  • Cooked Barley or Farro mixed with fried, seasoned tofu cubes; ~500-600 calories?
My total list of treats includes:
  • 4 slices of pie (by volume, not at once)
  • 2 dinners at Chipotle; both times it was a Sofritas Salad with the works; ~900 calories
  • 1 dinner at a Mexican restaurant, ordered a veggie burrito that was massively unsatisfying
Sugar cravings died off after about 3 weeks. I'm still craving pizza on a daily basis.

It's amazing what that can do for you. I'm mostly in the opposite camp so far in 2018--my exercise routine is much-improved and on-plan for summer running goals, but the old trash compactor in my head is still seeing the same level of detritus intake. I need to work on that this month.

Should probably start parking this here instead of the bread and sugar fasting thread.

And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range
