Yet ANOTHER new Star Wars film series

Post by pr0ner »

Yep. Another day, another bit of Star Wars news.

This time, Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff will be writing and producing a new series of Star Wars films. These will be separate from Rian Johnson's new trilogy.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Interesting. I am intrigued.

I wondering if they're handling the Aunt Beru origin film.

I hear they'll be doing the Beru origin trilogy *after* the core Owen-Beru love story tetralogy.

Is this going to be some alternate universe take on the galaxy where Luke and Leia get together?

I doubt it.

Considering some of the terrible plot contrivances in the last season of GoT when Benioff & Weiss didn't have a book to reference, I'm not sure how much I trust them with making an original Star Wars movie...

Finally, a Star Wars with lots of unnecessary nudity.

This could actually be interesting. If they set it during the Old Republic era, they'd have a large playground that they could do interesting things with, as most of that hasn't been explored beyond comic books and games.

I guess the one thing is that with a series you would have to create characters that you could grow with, or at least expand upon. And having some grand overall plot might be tougher when it is not part of the "most important" plot line of the era.

I'm surprised anyone really has a problem with this. Especially with presumed talent at the helm. Even as someone who's constantly underwhelmed by Marvel films, I'm never like, "geez, I wish there were about half as many". They're generally above average entertainment.

The more projects they start, the more likely some will finally break the mold. As decent as Rogue One was, and as surprisingly good as the Han Solo film looks to me after the release of the trailer, I desperately want to see something "new" in the universe. With two new trilogies, one of them has a pretty good chance of of meeting that need, right? And even if one of them is a continuation of the new trilogy, isn't that something we want eventually, several years down the road? Don't you want to see Rey turn dark or something? They can only cram so much into the one series.

Impact wise, the original trilogy will never be matched. And yes, it can be argued each new film slightly dilutes its legacy. But I can't imagine a world in which I'm pissed to be getting a new Star Wars movie every year as long as the average quality remains good. The Last Jedi grasped at crafting a Star Wars relevant for our time. Maybe they can really push that envelope, and we can have the "Star Wars for today" as well as the side projects that massage our nostalgia feelers.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Actually, one could argue it would be easier since you'd have less pressure to live up to and just be able to create something fun within the universe.

I’ll consider complaining once they put out a bad one.

Hasn’t happened yet, so as far as I’m concerned, keep the Star Wars movie factory rolling.

I'm all for more Star Wars stuff too. Rogue One gave me hope that they can still churn out a good movie. Episodes VII and VIII have made me relax my expectations.

Star Wars movies are falling off my must-see list and I'll begin waiting on reviews before I decide to see them at the theater. Still, I won't complain about having more Star Wars.

So far my scorecard shows:

Good
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Rogue One

Okay
Return of the Jedi
The Force Awakens
The Last Jedi

Bad
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith

That's not a great track record.

I can agree with that although my "okay" rating would be a little stronger. I think they were better than just okay. Well I might leave TLJ at okay and use label the other two with something more positive.

Deadline
Of note, three new as-yet-untitled Star Wars films will release on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2022. Those dates are Dec. 16, 2022; Dec. 20, 2024; and Dec. 18, 2026.

Deadline
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the duo who in 2011 launched the singular screen sensation known as Game of Thrones, have walked away from their much-publicized deal with Disney’s Lucasfilm to launch a feature film trilogy in 2022.
...
The Emmy-winning pair cited their historic deal with Netflix. They said their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless but, regrettably, their schedule is full.

If your "schedule is too full" to helm a new star wars trilogy, then I suspect this has more to do with politics and the amount of head honcho studio involvement, rather than actual full schedule. Sounds like doublespeak for, "we can't work with the conditions they gave us."

Or after what happened with GoT's final season, those holding SW's reigns had a different outlook on who should be helming it. Because why give someone a series if you know they'll get bored of it and want to rush it just so they could get it over with. I think that's going to be a black mark on them for some time.

You know, everytime I watch Peaky Blinders, I have the same thought. That Cillian Murphy would make a great Imperial soldier. And I keep thinking that he'd make a great young Tarkin if they were to ever make a Young Tarkin movie with him rising through the ranks until getting to serve for Vader.
