[TV] Fall 2018 Schedule

Post by Isgrimnur »

Nickelodeon
The Viacom-owned kiddie-media empire intends to unleash more than 800 new episodes of its various TV series, a jump of about 20% over last season’s output of around 700 new episodes.
...
The kids’ outlet will focus on series that present broader families and more characters from a broader array of backgrounds, said Zarghami, noting that modern kids want to see shows that mirror the people in their lives.
...
Nickelodeon will serve that up in “Los Casagrandes,” a companion series to its new animated mainstay, “The Loud House,” about a small boy and his many sisters.. The new program will show Lincoln Loud’s friend Ronnie Anne and her brother Bobby Santiago living in the city with a chaotic multi-generational family. Another new animated series is “Pony,” a buddy comedy featuring Annie and an excitable pony who comes to live with her family. “Pony” is the first animated series to be greenlit for the U.S. from Nickelodeon Intl.

In the live-action category, “Keep It Spotless” is a new competition series, executive produced by WWE Superstar Jon Cena, that features real kids competing in a variety of physical and paint-filled challenges while trying to stay as clean as possible. Nickelodeon has also renewed “Lip Sync Battle Shorties” for a new 10-episode cycle. Nick Cannon will return as host along with sidekick JoJo Siwa.

The company will also create content for non-linear venues. In a first, Nickelodeon will launch the short-form competition series “Musical Dares” on its YouTube channel, created in partnership with Viacom Digital Studios and executive produced by Nick Cannon.

Ovation
Let me just start out by saying that I am a great fan of Ovation -- “America’s only arts network,” according to Liz Janneman, its executive vice president, network strategy.
Ovation programming “celebrates the artist experience through premium content and compelling storytelling,” she adds.

The network announced four shows that showcase that mission.

“X Company,” is a World War II-based espionage series inspired by true events at Camp X, a top-secret Allied spy training camp on Lake Ontario.

“Versailles" is now in its sophomore year and will enter its third and final season in 2018-2019. George Blagden, who plays King Louis XIV on the program, marveled at the series’ authenticity. It’s filmed at Versailles, “one of the eight wonders of the world,” he noted, “There is no pretending: we are actually in the 350-year-old space where ballet was invented and opera performed.”

"The Wine Show,” which previously aired on Hulu, takes a storytelling approach to wine connoisseurship, with episodes shot in eleven countries over five continents. One of its hosts, Joe Fattorini, assured the upfront crowd that anyone can become a wine expert in 90 seconds. “Look for BLIC,” he said. “That is, balance: Is it fruity or acidic? Length — how long does the taste stay in your mouth? Intensity of the wine flavor. And complexity — you should note no more than three distinct tastes.”

“Riviera,” which is “a sensation in the UK,” according to Janneman, debuts February 2019 on Ovation. Set in France, it follows an art curator who is trying to solve the mystery of her husband’s murder.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

A&E Networks
A&E wrapped up 12 consecutive months of total viewer growth in February on the ratings strength of such series as Live PD and Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath and 60 Days In. The network, which is back in the Top 10 and has four current shows that have won top program Emmys — Scientology and the Aftermath, Born This Way, Intervention and Biography — is staying the course, greenlighting four more non-fiction series.

The list includes Many Sides of Jane, about a single mother of two with Dissociative Identity Disorder; Lost for Life, about a recent Supreme Court ruling that gives juveniles once sentenced to mandatory life in prison without parole the ability to have their cases re-evaluated; The Accused, which follows individuals maintaining their innocence after being accused of a crime, from arrest to verdict; and Employable Me, following adults with disabilities searching for their dream jobs as they hone in on their unique abilities.

Crown Media
Crown Media President and CEO Bill Abbott and ad sales chief Ed Georger were joined by network stars Candace Cameron Bure and Danica McKellar for a short Facebook live event at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Among the announcements, Hallmark Channel said it had renewed its original drama "When Calls the Heart" for a sixth season, greenlit a second season of the reality series "Meet the Peetes," and added three original movie franchies to Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. "The Chronicle Mysteries" starts with a novelist who takes on a cold case, "Picture Perfect" centers on a photographer who helps solve crimes and "Crossword Mysteries" features a crossword puzzle editor who finds herself in the middle of a police investigation. "Crossword Mysteries" is co-created by Will Shortz, crossword editor of The New York Times.

Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath was riveting. I would never wish that sort of mental manipulation or torture on anyone. I hope there are no more stories to tell but if there are then they should get told.

IFC
IFC, the cable channel owned by AMC Networks, is known for its off-kilter brand of comedy programming.

Now, the channel is looking for advertisers that share that sensibility, as it plans deeper integrations with its brand, particularly in late night.
...
For example, on digital IFC will roll out "Sloth TV" in its digital apps and website -- "like having a yule log, but every single month," Callaway says. Among the original and acquired long-form programming for this feature is footage of a sloth crawling through the grass, or a grandmother knitting a sweater once the weather gets cold in the fall.

On TV, the channel is launching its response to the “HQ Trivia” game show phenomenon, adding bingo to its Thursday night weekly movies, with celebrities and regular IFC employees reading the numbers as the movie goes on. Viewers at home can play along in an app.

In late night, the company is expanding its partnership with Funny or Die, and is reviving the 1980's cult favorite "Night Flight," which will air on Friday night/Saturday morning at 1 a.m.
...
While IFC is beefing up late night and digital for brands, its prime-time lineup remains the star of the show. At its upfront presentation in New York Thursday, the channel announced that it had renewed the baseball-themed comedy “ Brockmire” for a third and fourth season (the show’s second season debuts next month), and that “Documentary Now,” the mockumentary series from creators Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and Seth Meyers, would return for a new, third season next year as well, after a hiatus of more than a year.

Discovery
Discovery Inc. made a splashy presentation of an expanded programming lineup at its upfront Tuesday evening, touting the breadth of the lifestyle niches the cable group serves after acquiring the parent company of Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel for $14.6 billion earlier this year.

Discovery president-CEO David Zaslav opened the session at Alice Tully Hall by talking up the appeal of the company’s “functional content” as good counter-programming at a time when the TV world is awash in scripted programs.
...
The core group of brands among its 19 U.S. outlets are: Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, Animal Planet, Motor Trend Network, Travel Channel, Science Channel, and DIY Network.
...
Coinciding with the upfront, Discovery unveiled a slew of programming news across its key channels. Among the highlights:
  • Martha Stewart is joining Food Network’s long-running cooking competition series “Chopped” as a judge.
  • Discovery will launch a competition series revolving around a mystery billionaire who is challenged to launch a multi-million dollar company in 90 days with only a modest amount of seed money. “Undercover Billionaire” will end with the mogul revealing his identity and his decision to give the company to those who helped him in the launch.
  • HGTV’s hit “Property Brothers” home renovation franchise is throwing a wedding in the Italian countryside for star Drew Scott that will air on TLC (known for its wedding-centric shows) and then segue into a new HGTV series “Property Brothers at Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House.”
  • “America’s Most Wanted” veteran John Walsh is relocating to Investigation Discovery with “In Pursuit with John Walsh,” another vehicle focused on tracking down fugitives and cracking cold cases.
  • Also for Investigation Discovery, Khloe Kardashian will host “Twisted Sisters,” a look at provocative crimes committed by siblings.
  • Kate Gosselin, who became a reality star a decade ago on TLC’s “Kate Plus 8,” will be the focus of a show tracking her return to the dating world.
  • Animal Planet will serve up a docu series about the family of the late Australian adventurer Steve Irwin revolving around the conservation efforts led by his widow Terri and children Robert and Bindi.
  • Boyz II Men alum Nathan Morris drops the mic and picks up a tool belt for a home renovation challenge dubbed “Hit Properties with Nathan Morris” for DIY Network.
  • “Better Call Saul” co-star Michael McKean will host “Food: Fact or Fiction” for Cooking Channel.
  • TLC is assembling a two-hour special for next year featuring newly uncovered footage of the 1996 wedding of John Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. “JFK Jr. and Carolyn: A Camelot Wedding” will coincide with the 20th anniversary of their death in a plane crash.

I say this every season, but I think it bears repeating. We need more shows featuring lawyers, doctors and cops. They’ve been ignored too long as a subject.

It's not easy generating drama w/o death as a factor for seasons on end. Not as many other professions can be dramatized in that fashion.

It's a good show. Been running on CBC here in Canada and up to season 3. It's based on a real training camp, one that Ian Fleming supposedly visited and had gotten inspiration for James Bond.

ESPN (NewFront)
At its first appearance at the decade-old Digital Content NewFronts in New York, ESPN announced a new daily edition of SportsCenter for its mobile app, as well as a series of shows developed through parent Disney’s sweeping new agreement with Twitter.

But at the same time, it noted that it didn’t need to trumpet any radical new direction. The event merely served to drive home the ubiquity of ESPN and its vast reach across social media. In a direct, 45-minute presentation, ESPN ditched the playbook of its broadcast upfront (which is less than two weeks away), which often features a parade of athletes and top-name talent onstage. Instead, the featured stars were executives from Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook, and the VIP was the network’s newly redesigned app.

One of the app’s major new draws will be a new app-only edition of SportsCenter hosted by Scott Van Pelt and other SportsCenter anchors and will be a curated edition, with top plays, highlights and a preview of the day in sports.
...
ESPN, under the direction of newly installed president Jimmy Pitaro, has been overhauling its digital presence in recent weeks, rolling out a redesigned app as well as the $5-a-month OTT service ESPN+. The NewFronts announcements emphasized the effort to deliver the network’s content to fans across platforms, a top-line priority for Disney CEO Bob Iger. Disney is also building a direct-to-consumer app for launch in late 2019.

Fox
“The Last Man on Earth” has been canceled after four seasons at Fox, Variety has confirmed.
...
Fox has also canceled “The Mick” after two seasons.
...
Finally, Fox has canceled “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” after five seasons.
...
Fox previously renewed “9-1-1,” “Empire,” “Star,” “The Resident,” “The Gifted,” “The Orville” and “The Simpsons” for the 2018-19 television lineup. The network has also ordered new dramas “The Passage” and “Proven Innocent” to series, as well as a new comedy entitled “The Cool Kids.”

I liked the first season of Last Man On Earth, tolerated the second season, and bailed when all the women started popping out babies -- often a sign of writers grasping at straws. I think that was early in S3. The humor was lowbrow and some of the characters never gelled, but it occasionally connected. RIP I guess.

Fox kept screwing with Brooklyn Nine-Nine's schedule to the point that I never knew when it was on or when it was coming back after long breaks in the schedule. They tend to do that with almost every show that I've liked on that channel to the point that I don't really go out of my way to watch new comedies on that channel.

I'm hoping Timeless gets renewed for next season - it's one of the few shows left for a decision to be made on, and it'll probably depend on the ratings for tonight's two part season finale.

I'm really shocked (but happy) that Elementary got renewed, it had been surprising it got renewed for it's current season, so seeing it get renewed for another season after only having 2 episodes broadcast is kinda jaw dropping.

Don't be shocked about elemantery. They own it and are making a killing on vod, and distribution. Ratings are well and truly pointless now.

Gotham got a 13 episode order for a final season. Total episodes after next season, an even 100. The magic number for syndication. Again, ratings were a secondary consideration at most.

Lethal Weapon and Gotham are the only non Fox produced shows on Fox tv...

Syfy not renewing The Expanse, Independent studio.

The landscape is changing so rapidly.

Travel Channel
Transformers actress Megan Fox is producing and starring in a new show on the Travel Channel called Mysteries and Myths with Megan Fox.

The shows goal? To make you question the work of archaeologists, who are really just trying to mask "the truth" of history from us all.

And Fox should know, because she isn't an historian or an archaeologist herself.

"History only gives us a one-sided view of the truth," Fox told Deadline.

"I haven't spent my entire life building a career in academia so I don't have to worry about my reputation or being rebuked by my colleagues, which allows me to push back on the status quo. So much of our history needs to be re-examined."
It's almost as if people are the problem.
