Looking for a lawnmower part cheap

Post by Daehawk »

Figured it couldn't hurt to ask on here . Never know who knows a cheap safe site :)

Still need that front axle cover for a self propelled push mower. Te places Ive found it on want $70 - $80 for a piece of damn plastic. Its the plastic front end that holds the front axle on.

Part # is MTD 931-1829 . It looks like this.

the current cheapest I can find is about $69 from Jacks. And I dont know jack about Jacks. No point in finding a deal thats $40 if I lose that money and get no part some shady place.

I can borrow some money and get a rider mower if its cheap. Ive seen them around $300 but not near me enough for me to ride it home. Grass is up to my knees and the neighbors have mowed 3 times already.

I was going to tell you what I would do, but I'm not sure there wouldn't be potential legal ramifications if somebody gets hurt.
Technically, he shouldn't be here.

Craigslist is likely your best bet. Failing that, you may want to consider looking into a crowdsourcing service like LawnMowingOnline.com, which offers nationwide mowing for $19.

Seems to me if the grass is up to your knees then you are way past anything a mower could handle. Sounds like that first pass would be more about a weed whacker or perhaps... a scythe.

Get some pygmy goats, they are cute and maybe edible.

I have neighbors near me with them, and others (bigger lot) with Barbosa (sp) sheep.

Got a cousin supposed to bush hog the yard with his tractor this week. Will need to point out the stumps, wood logs, and pet graves to him.

Not an expert. Can jury rig a different axle cover? I don't know what MTD means, so I can't place context to small picture.

MTD is a brand that covers MANY types of mowers. Like mine itself is a Yardman brand but MTD is the parent parts for it. Im not sure but I think they are owned by someone else themselves.

The part problem has been solved by someone very kind who I wont mention unless given permission. But know that a part is on the way and I will be able to repair it soon and get it back out there into the yard. It will be a real blessing too. I cannot see how to exit the driveway safely.

I got the ok to gush about someone on here who helped me out BIG time today. Isgrimnur contacted me out of the blue earlier and ordered me the axle part for my mower thats been broken for 4 years now. I mean how fantastic is that?? To beat all its my birthday today and its been made so cool. So guys a round for Is if you would. Guy has a heart of gold.

Also another person who just gifted me a game. Again I wont say who without permission but that was out of the blue also. So thanks to you too you know who you are...I hope! :)

As Stitch said ... “OO means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten” He did say that right?...thought so :)

Hmmm... someone must have upgraded his software. That seems outside the original scope.

Well done, Isg. Well done. :D

And take it slow and easy, Dae. As I recall, mowing is a bit challenging for you physically. Don't over do it.

Thanks Mix. It is. Most is. But this is a self propelled push mower. Once I get her going I just walk behind it. I think I felt better when I did mow. It forced me to move. Looking forward to it.

The grass is waist high right now so my cousin is supposed to bush hog my yard. That way I can then mow it before it grows up again. The part should be here by the weekend next week and I should have it together a few days later. Ill try to get some before and after of the yard and mower.

Part arrived today. Thought Id post my plans and before and after pics.

Cousin was supposed to bush hog the yard last week but hasn't shown yet. Not heard from them.

Tomorrow I plan to cut the brush from my garage entrance to get in there. The doors are rotten and off the hinges so have to be careful and not squish myself.

Thursday is the day to clean the back concrete off so I can have a work area to rebuild the mower.

Friday I have a pain doctor appointment but when I get home I hope to put the mower together and try to get it running after 4 years.

Of course I have thunderstorms in the forecast through Monday of next week so all of this may fall through and probably will. But I will get to it soon as possible. All depends on when he bush hogs. Its too high to simply mow.

Update: Yard has now been bush hogged and I have cut away the brush blocking my garage storage. I checked and it appears all parts of the mower are still there and I should be able to repair it. My plan is to repair it tomorrow. I checked and have both oil for the mower and the little oil mix for the gas for the trimmers.

So maybe tomorrow depending on rain I repair the mower. Then I will get a plug for the cord this week and some gas. If the weather and my health hold I should have it together and all stuff ready within the week. The last thing Ill do is order the side discharger chute for it so I can mower higher grass.

Ill try to rememebr to take pics tomorrow of the yard since its hogged and the mower as I fix it. Might just be a before and after. Still showing thunderstorms at 30 - 60% all week.

Got it out repair it. Cant. Its missing 3 of the 6 bolts. Will have to wait on my check to get here first part of the month. I also will pick up some bolts to try and repair the self drive cable housing. Its busted and I didn't know it. The side discharge will simply have to wait.

Already in the wife's purse. Its a bit weird as there are no threads in the part itself. The bolts have large threads that seem to thread themselves into the plastic. I have to buy the right ones or they will simply split the new part.

I could use one of these...so cool

The lawnmower model is MTD 12A-979L062 (2000) ..its a Yard Man

I dont plan on using the same bolts if I can help it...or screw I should say. Its a hex screw of some type. I have a hex driver so its no big deal but I just doubt I can find them local and Im guessing a regular bolt that I can get for 20 cents would cost me $5 in that style. Online it says tap screw ..a bit over $2 each. Ill look local.

Yeah, the drive type isn’t going to matter. It’s size, head type, and threading that matter.

I looked ta it some more before putting back in storage for now. I found a total of 3 screws out of about 6 or so its supposed to have . Looking though I think those 3 is all its had for a long time because the other 3 spots are rusty so thats probably why it broke in the first place.

While Im waiting to fix this thing I would like to gather some opinions on another part of it. The control housing for the self drive controls is busted. I had it taped with duck tape to hold it together. Basically the bolts / screws stripped out of it. As you can see in the pic below the one side has hole for the screws / bolts to go into and they screw into a part inside the other part inside of it. They dont come out the other side. I can either order that part and pay nearly $30 or I can do this......I can drill through the top hole and out the other side and simply run longer bolt and nuts in it or maybe even a bolt and wingnut thing.

Do you guys think there would be a problem with that? I dont forsee one.

Nope. Seems reasonable to me.

Though I'd double check that bolts sticking out the far side won't interfere with anything.

:) Sorry since posting that last thing Ive been to town 1 time and it was for survival food and we were sick. Haven't felt well since and not been back. Hoping to go end of week or next.Im not getting anything done. I did find out yesterday while checking the part and such I dont have a star bit to fit those screws. I have a large flat head bit that holds but I may have to look for a large star or torx driver. Why do they make stuff like that. Maybe it grips better since its making its own threads as its screwed in.

reddit wrote:Slotted drives are cheap and easy to make for both the screws and the tools.

Phillips was invented to limit the torque applied, instead they 'cam-out' at a certain torque. This prevents the head of the bolt from snapping off, which you have have done on a hex bolt before.

When technology advanced that feature wasn't required anymore, and industry started moving to square drive, but due to business/patent issues allen/hex was used instead.

Torx was created as an even better (easier to align, more precise, less cam-out) alternative to hex. Until just recently it was patented, which keeps costs high, and lowers availability to small manufactures. Torx is now being partially replaced by Torx-plus, which is still under patent protection.

That should cover the ones you asked about, there are dozens of other styles that have had various levels of success. Different industry mechanics are expected to have different tools, so manufactures will design their products to make use of those tools already in the field.

TL;DR: Different styles have different advantages, history plays a large part in what we use today.

What about that. thinking about it now I see where phillips would do that but for most of my life I figured it was made to keep the damn screwdriver in the slot because straight one constantly slide out on you. Neat info. I can attest to phillips ripping the head slot out of a screw even if it doesn't break it.

OBVIOUSLY you don't own a Jeep Wrangler with which you need to swap hard and soft tops seasonally. If so you would own Torx bits already...
