Galaxy S9 battery drain

Post by Xmann »

Without rehashing my dislike of my previous android phones, I bit the bullet this week and bought the Galaxy S9.

Thus far I really really like everything about the phone. However, the battery life is killing me. I have googled and read numerous suggestions on tips and tricks to extend the daily battery life, but it's been awful.

My first day with the phone was Wednesday morning. I take it off charge at 6am and with casual use, I was down to 30% by 1pm. This is with just normal text and calling. Little to no battery intensive use. I was off yesterday and with a bit more use, I had to quick charge twice before I went to bed at about 11pm or it would have died.

I have most of the battery saving suggestions in use. Turned off always on screen, power saving, wifi and device scanning, etc. To no avail, I'm having to throw it on charge after just a few hours.

I took it off charge at 8am this morning and I'm at 42% right now.

Is this what I can expect or is something wrong?

Somethings wrong I would guess. Was it a refurb? I have the latest Note and go a full day on one charge with heavy use. Charges to full with a lightening cable in a couple hours.

Brand new unlocked straight from Samsung

When I go to the optimization setting, it always says I'm at 90/100

Your phone should already have Doze mode enabled.

I'd just start disabling you don't use, and get a better idea on which apps are using all your battery power.

Took phone off charge at 6am and it's now 2pm. Light web surfing and texting and I'm at 44%, which seems like an improvement.

No apps or any processes taking up much resources.

When I first got my Huawei Watch, there was universal concern for battery life. Mine had some initial battery drain and now it can last almost a day and a half.

I'm hoping this eventually changes with this phone and battery life improves.

I had to tune my S6 a bit. Right now I'm using Naptime though Doze is a similar app that enforces doze mode when screen turns off. I also have a brightness manager and a better screen-off manager.

The problem is sometimes the phone just goes nuts with the sensor. This phone should sip power at about 5-7% per hour with normal usage. Just this morning, with the phone sitting on my bed most of the day, it was draining power at 12% per hour and it ran out of juice (I was on the PC and never noticed).

Galaxy S9 has been reported to have worse battery life than even S8 because Samsung went really conservative on battery capacity (after the S7 exploding battery fiasco). Plus, a brand-new phone is guaranteed to come loaded with all kinds of bloated crap that's running in the background.

You should go under Settings > Device Maintenance > Battery > Battery Usage and see what apps are draining the battery in the background.

My screen is at 26% battery use and everything else is <5%.

Does keeping automatic adjustment burn more battery? I have the screen set about 50% now. I feel if I move it lower it just becomes too dark.

If you are running at highest display resolution, you may want to lower it in display settings. 26% usage by the screen is insane.

Edit: Yep, it's (mostly) the screen resolution.

It should minimize brightness and thus, less power consumption. CPU usage should be minimal.

Wife got a new S9 yesterday. Today it was at 100% when she left for work and 77% when she got home 9 hours later. Default settings and very light usage.

Heh. Based on this thread I thought she'd be scraping bottom by the end of the day, so I offered to optimize some battery settings for her. Didn't need it, but I changed "power saving" from off to medium since I was dinking around with it anyway.

Your experience doesn't seem normal, and if it doesn't improve you might want to return it or complain. Hers was purchased in a Verizon store and set up for her there. She's paying $24.99/mo for 24 months ($600) plus sales tax and an accessories package (case, charger, earbuds, screen protector).

I'm better so far today. 90% right now and I took it off charge around 3 hours ago.

However, just typing this I've lost 1%.

Ok, battery better and my screen usage is only 6%.

When I'm using my phone for surfing or texting the battery percentage is just ticking off. They can price really watch the percentage points drop while I'm using it.

As a former Cingular customer service person, I can tell you that the biggest battery drains for a phone are powering the backlight and an active connection to the network. And that was true back in the flip phone days.

GPS is the biggest drain on my phone. Tracking a 45-minute walk with Endomundo or a 20-minute drive with Waze easily sucks down 25%. Waze is especially bad because the screen is lit the whole time.

Just don't understand this battery.

The past couple days were not bad. I got around 4% drain an hour.

This morning I'm getting around 11% drain and I have changed nothing or used the phone any different. My screen usage was at 5% yesterday and 4% today but something is sucking the battery.

It could be a just updated app. The battery optimization thing may not have kicked in yet for newly updated apps.

I had the same thing happen the other day. The phone was next to me, face down, and it sucked down all the juice in 6 hours that it's empty by 2pm, and there were no changes other than auto-updates.

There may be something under "power savings mode" to configure. On my S6, power savings mode, details, scroll down to access a bunch more settings, like which ones to kill when the phone's screen goes off, and which ones stay alive for background updates.

I'm learning to live with it because I absolutely love the phone.

I start my day at 6am and get home around 8.

If I text, check twitter, light surfing then I can get home with about 20% battery. If I stream some music or do some light gaming, the battery is running dead around 5pm.

I'll deal with it, but it's the worse battery life of any phone I've owned.
