House warming gift for the couple that has everything

Post by stimpy »

A friend of mine recently got married and a bought a $2 million shack in Barrington, IL.
I've know him for quite a while and know he enjoys golf, booze, cigars and the Blackhawks.
I don't know her all that well. I'd like to get something they both would use and enjoy.
His and hers monogrammed towels just don't seem appropriate. I could do something moderately expensive, but nothing too crazy.
Any thoughts?

Blackhawks convention
Both good ideas, but I don't think she likes cigars. Although that may work in tandem with a wine of the month club or something similar for her. Hmmmm........
And we are both Blackhawk season ticket holders, thats how we met, so we're already doing the convention.

What does "moderately expensive" mean to your budget?

Couple of hundred? Certainly nothing more than $500.

Home Depot gift card. Always appreciated as a home owner.

Don't know if someone that buys a $2M home needs to work on it themselves, but maybe they'd like to get some power tools and a workshop set up?

A lick of sense?

Really, I got nothing. I can't relate to $2 million home owner insight or a housewarming gift that breaks in to three digits.

You could get a decent key-winding mantel clock for that. I'm partial to mechanical clocks myself, and good ones become family heirlooms. (My parents bought one in the mid 1960s and I have been keeping it wound up ever since.) Here's an example that's very similar to mine.

Make sure they don't already have one, first.

Not what you were asking, but for my friends that are getting married, but clearly are well off and have a well stocked house, I'll just give donations to charities in their name.

Whereas I saw that and thought "They have a two million dollar house, house why would they want a swing not mounted on a hardpoint?"

I would advise against buying something expensive (or even cheap) that they are supposed to display in their house. They just bought the house and if the wife is like my wife she is going to want the house filled with things SHE picked out. If you make them feel obligated to display something then they might resent it.

I don't know much about housewarming presents though because I think a bottle of wine is a good gift when you come over for the first time. Make it a nice bottle or if you want to spend > $100 you could buy a really nice bottle of scotch.

With a $500 budget you can get a really nice bottle of Scotch. You can get really good one for $200. If he likes cigars and booze, that would be my recommendation.

You could get him a good bottle of sctoch and her a very nice bottle of wine under your budget.

Consumables are always good for people that "have everything."

Blackhawks wise, if you could find Toews' game I'm sure your friend would appreciate that. On a more realistic level, an autographed Kane Team USA jersey might be nice in light of his performance in the 2018 worlds so far. The wife would probably hate that though.

You can't go wrong with a traditional housewarming gift. Those friends of mine who actual do things like house-warming gifts stick to the "big three":
  • Bread (May those in this home never go hungry)
  • Wine (May you always have joy and never go thirsty)
  • Salt (May there always be flavor and spice in your life)

I agree with the wine and liquor suggestions. If you don't want to do that for some reason...

If she likes golf also get them 2 rounds at a nice golf course they have not played before.

This may seem a bit out there and is really cheap, but this flashlight or one like it is awesome. If they have a big lot with some acreage this is nice to have close at hand at night. I live in the country so it is really dark at night and use it almost every night when I take my dog out or any reason I need to go into my yard after dark. In fact I liked it so much after the first time I used it I immediately ordered 3 more so I could have 1 at work, 2 at home, and 1 in my truck.

Go to a spice store like Penzy's and get them a huge gift set that includes salt and pepper mills.

I once got some friends a round at Cog Hill Dubsdread. That came in at around $400, but I don't know if they ever used it. Once they tried to book and was told they could only reserve foursomes. :?

Oxy is pretty good, not completely junk like the generics, but not overpriced like StreamLight. I'd imagine Oxy is the same maker with generics, but their pricing and support is a lot better.

For the heck of it, this is like a mini floodlight, for not much more expensvie. (hahaha)

Well for $15 I don't care all that much about support. But I've been using mine 4-5 days a week for 2.5 years and it still works like new. Battery still holds a good charge (better than I thought it would before I bought it) and light output has not diminished.

Well I already have a spotlight similar to this so I don't need any more mega lights. Not the best for walking around with but really lights up the yard.

This one I have from Fenix is prob my favorite compact flashlight I own. Great size to throw in a pocket but it's almost too small for walking and carrying. And even though it goes through batteries slower than a lot of others I have owned with massive usage you are still going to run through batteries.

I've bought and used a lot of flashlights over the years (too many, I might have a flashlight problem  ), some for more specific uses, some general. I still think this is the best combination of price/use/quality/handling I've owned for everyday use.
