Summer 2018 Movies

Post by Isgrimnur »

Since stessier is slacking...

Infinity War - April, but I'll call it summer blockbuster creep.
Deadpool 2
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Ocean's 8
Incredibles 2
Tag - or Hawkeye Takes a Holiday
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Sicario: Day of the Soldado
Ant-Man and the Wasp
The First Purge
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation
Skyscraper
The Equalizer 2
Mile 22 - Marky Mark plays a federal cop
Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Christopher Robin
The Meg - giant shark, not a Family Guy film
The Happytime Murders - Melissa McCarthy and adult puppets
Replicas - Keanu Reeves sci-fi
The Predator
Robin Hood
Johnny English Strikes Again
Venom
It's almost as if people are the problem.

I'm excited about Sicario because the first one was so good and Predator because of Shane Black.
Not much else.

I loved Sicario too, but I'm a bit worried about the new one as they lost the original director.

I saw Infinity War and Deadpool 2 in the theater. Probably the only other movie I'll see in the theater this summer is Antman.

After looking at that list, I realize that I just don't look forward to most summer tentpoles anymore. About the only one I really have any interest in is the new Johnny English.

A few rentals out of that list but nothing I must see.

Yeah, lots of formulaic ho-hum. I'll probably see 1-2 movies just for the AC, but I don't care which ones. Depends on what's playing during the worst heat waves.

Maybe I'm getting old, but...

When I went to Solo I saw previews for Tag, Jurassic World, Skyscraper, Mission Impossible, Robin Hood, and Venom, and even with the difference in stars and sets and costumes it seemed like they were all the same movie.

The Jurassic World movies are so far away from Crichton's original vision that they don't really feel like they belong in the same universe beyond having dinosaurs. It's like they make a mockery of the original movies.

I was entertained well enough by the last one (which I thought also got pretty good reviews). I'm not expecting Oscar-level performances based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning script though.

Now that my mother-in-law is back, I supposed it's possible we may see any of the above-listed movies (most which I know nothing about). The last time we saw a movie in a theater was before she left last November.

The kids movies and the marvel movies. Not really much interest in anything else.

The last one was absurd even for a Jurassic Park movie. Trainable raptors? That's just silly. Bryce Dallas Howard was annoying. Running with high-heals in the jungle? I can't believe she's back in the sequel, given how careless and negligent was was. She's no John Hammond, that's for sure. No, I don't expect a prize winning script, but I also don't expect these movies to stoop so low. They're insulting movies. The original movies at least went off the basis of science based on what we knew at the time, but these don't even seem to be trying.

How does Tag possibly look like the "same movie" as Jurassic World or Mission: Impossible 6?

You know, theaters that serve booze are a thing now...sounds like you need to drink a little more before/during/after such movies. :D

Oh, I saw it at home, on Netflix. My expectations had been considerably lowered given the criticisms the movie had, but even then I felt it sucked terribly.

I've already seen IW and Solo, and I'll for sure be seeing Incredibles 2 and Ant Man and Wasp in the theater.

Pounding music, running, close-ups of faces yelling?

Obviously that one is kind of an outlier in the pack, but still. I know the theme of summer movies is frantic action, but they really did all just run together back to back like that.

I don't know if I would be conflating what's obviously a comedy and a bunch of action/scifi blockbusters like you are, but YMMV.

I shouldn't have implied something literal when I meant something impressionistic.

I do understand that I was seeing trailers for different movies.

It looks like Jurassic World 2 doesn't have it's own thread. I saw it this weekend. Thought it was about as good as the first one. I really loved how they handled the controversy from the first one with Claire running through the whole movie in heels. When I saw the new one make it's point, I laughed out loud. I don't think anyone else got it though.

I thought the 2nd one was bad. I know it's an action adventure movie and don't expect a great story, but man the plot was all over the place. I just kept thinking, Solo makes 70 million over opening weekend, and Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom makes 700 million opening. Something is wrong, mainly marketing. (Solo's trailers did a bad job promoting the movie)

I'm glad you liked it, not telling your opinion was wrong, I just was bored with it halfway through.

We saw Tag yesterday and enjoyed it. It’s not deep, it’s not groundbreaking, but it is fun. Stay through the credits.

The Jurassic World movie, well it's a Jurassic World movie. Complaining about it is like complaining about the food at McDonald's. Enjoy it for what it is or look for something elsewhere.

Hereditary is the one that sticks with me so far. The funny thing is that movie is not scary, and it's not a 'summer movie' imo, but damn if it isn't owning this summer in my mind.

Just saw Crazy Rich Asians. A flawed movie, but I really enjoyed it.

Memories of it are already merging with countless Filipino rom-coms that I've been subjected to over the years. The only thing really different about this one is that it's entirely in English and has a multinational cast. My wife really liked it...I kind of missed being unable to form my own narrative, only to be told by my wife "WHAT? That never happened!" because I couldn't understand most of what was being said (the Filipino movies are substantially Tagalog with occasional bursts of English (or, Tagenglish, as it is sometimes called).

Life Itself - really enjoyed it. Maybe ten minutes too long. I can't believe it has a 13% on rotten tomatoes (although around 80% from viewers).

Simple Favor - a lot of promise but a crummy ending left a bad taste in my mouth. Very good for the first 1:45 though.
