Need Hivemind help for stupid reason
Recently bought a house and the mailbox is trashed and needs to be replaced.
Problem is, it was mounted to the front of the house, which is covered in rocks and concrete.
It opens by grabbing the handle and pulling down, thus swinging it open.
All the boxes I can find are opened by swinging the top up, which wont work because of the rocks jutting out from the wall.
I've searched high and low and cant find anything that remotely looks or opens like it.
Someone use the Googlefu and help me!!!

Re: Need Hivemind help for stupid reason
My business has used one of these for the last eight years. It's held up well. I did place a hasp on each side in addition to the center lock though. Painted it also because plastic(roof) placed in the sun always benefits from having a coat of paint on it. Added benefit of this box is that it's more secure than plain old box. It's tapcon'd right into the block wall with big tapcons and big fender washers for strength.

For those, the mailman still has to open the top to put the mail in.
The top of anything getting opened against the rock surface will get ruined in no time.

I saw those. Even went to Ace to get a look at it. Then I realized it has to be flush mounted. That aint happening with the rock wall it need to be mounted on.em2nought wrote: ↑Sun Jun 17, 2018 1:02 pm My business has used one of these for the last eight years. It's held up well. Rusted to the point that it's hard to swing open and close. I tried WD-40. No better.
The little bolts or whatever that allow it to swing are just shot. Cant replace them either.

WD-40 is garbage. Try something from this company instead.
I bet you could replace the hinge bolts, too, with a little ingenuity (or by talking to the hardware store guy).

Just saw this. If you don't plan on flush mounting it, how are you going to mount it? Flush is relative after all.stimpy wrote: ↑Sun Jun 17, 2018 1:16 pmI saw those. As you can see this one doesn't require a flush mounting.

Can you remove the box? If so it seems you could patch the holes and mount one somewhere else.

For reference, this is what it has to mount to. The 2 spikes sticking out are what the old one was mounted to.

Is it possible you can't find a replacement because that specific style of mailbox is no longer approved by the Postmaster General? Just trying to come up with a reason you can find it, I totally see why you need it.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

New term for you
This is just an example, you can use almost anything for a spacer and cut each one to custom fit there. Maybe one will need to be 1/4 inch shorter for example. Four nice big tapcons with a spacer on the back and a fender washer on either side of the box and you'll be good to go. You might need to relocate the bottom two holes in the back of the box to align with a mortar seam.
You can just buy a section of copper pipe for example and cut four pieces to length, or anything close. I'd probably stuff steel wool or something in the mortar seams so wasps don't build a nest behind your box. Maybe not steel wool, might rust, maybe I'd cut up one of those green ac filters into strips and insert that into the mortar joints. You could just finish out the mortar flush behind the box also.
...and nobody steals your mail.

Depending on your budget, you can probably have a local metalsmith replace the hinges for you. Torch cut the bottom hinge, weld in new ones.

Ge a bunch of cement and fill in all the space between those rocks until it becomes a flat surface, then buy a flush mount mailbox...
or, buy a wooden post for the yard/walkway and mount it to that...

They do. I think it's against ordinance to have mailboxes on posts.
But.......my plan is to walk around the block and see how what other houses have and how they are mounted.
I may need bail.....

Re: Need Hivemind help for stupid reason
I fully understand what you're going through. When we bought our house one of the first orders of business was replacing the mailbox.
We live in a development where everyone has their mailbox on a post, mounted into the ground, with box mounted horizontally. We looked at all the
different colors, types and decided on a white box, with a pull down door, that has a slot for the mail, and the interior door is locked and can be unlocked
with a key.
Digging the hole for the post, getting it perfectly straight and level, everything that went into it took about 45 minutes, had the help of my uncle
and good luck would have it that it's been there since 2010. It's still straight, no cars have wrecked into or backed into it, and the neighborhood
birds love to take shits on the round ball that is on top of the post.
Good luck, just my take...I think you could upgrade to a better box, and if you don't want to tackle mounting it, hire a handyman and have
him remount some nails and get it in place. When there's a job around the house that's too complicated or I don't have the skill to handle I always
go to the local newspaper rag that they have in the city I live, there's always ads in the back for handyman for hire.

Get a bag and fill it with newspapers then ride a BMX bike around the neighborhood randomly throwing them. Nobody will even notice you.

Why not just do a curbside mailbox? Alternatively, get a locking package mailbox for securing amazon deliveries - be a bit forward thinking here...

That's close to what I was thinking. Don't mount the mailbox to the rocks. Mount some sort of vertical platform to the rocks that doesn't look like ass and mount the mailbox to that.

Mailman might not be willing to bend over to place mail in the box, but this one looks nice.

...and if my mailman wasn't willing to do that, I'd bolt a mailbox on top of the package drop too. lol

If your mailman wont even bend over then take a switch to them when they drop it off each day. :")
