My mom bought her two chemo nurses $40 bottles of champagne for Christmas. Yeah you should always thank people who are trying to save your lifeHolman wrote: ↑Tue Jul 03, 2018 7:59 pmIncidentally, I made sure to thank all of my nurses for taking good care of me. Three of them (I think I had eight all told) seemed sincerely touched, and they told me that most people don't say anything like that.
They added that they know most of their patients are too preoccupied with their own pain to reach out.

In all seriousness, nurses are nothing short of miraculous at times.
Gifts are appreciated, but a simple thank you really means a lot as well. If I have someone tell me how much I meant to them, it reaffirms why I do what I do.

Re: I am Hospitalized!
UPDATE--I APPEAR NOT TO HAVE CANCER, AT LEAST. The rest remains mysterious.
I had my follow-up appointment with the surgeon today. Here's what they found inside during the surgery:
--The biopsy they ran on tissue from my weirdly thickened mesentery shows no indications of cancer.
--There is also no evidence of Krohn's disease.
--The mesentery features several bumps involving adipose tissue that is inflamed and/or shows necrosis.
--There were significant adhesions of some tissue (tissue growing together, as scars do), something very unexpected in someone my age who has never had any prior surgery.
--A portion of my intestine appears to be functioning normally but is spotted with blood in ways that show something is abnormal.
--There is also similar mild hemorrhaging on mesentery tissue.
All of this was backed up by eight-by-ten color glossy photographs taken inside of me. Necrosis looks like it sounds like it would.
These symptoms and the blood work and etc don't point to an easily identifiable cause. The next step is to see a GI specialist who will actually go inside the intestine (probably from the stomach all the way down) get a look at what's happening bowelwise.
I imagine I can look forward to another catheter.
Do not ask to see the pictures. Don't.
OK, I'll spoiler them.

Congrats on the no cancer thing!
Bummer about the medical mystery part. Maybe you'll get in a text book as the Man Who Lived!
As for the last part - Pics or it didn't happen.
Edit: Wow - wrong dancing banana there. How very appropriate though.

Yeah, not clicking those spoilers. Biology is gross. Glad there's no obvious bad news, though.

Re: I am Hospitalized!
Strange. Read out your results to my wife. The only thing she can think of right off the top of her head is Salmonella, but she suspects the doctors would have looked for that.

Re: I am Hospitalized!
Much better! Thanks.
I'm certainly not in the kind of pain that sent me into surgery. That was apparently a result of the interruption of blood flow to my intestine. However, we still don't know the cause of that crisis. (One suspect is a chronic auto-immune condition that might be flaring up.)
The next step is to get a look inside the upper intestine. I have an initial appointment with a gastrointestinal specialist on Wednesday.

That’s what I have to explain to folks all the time - the docs can often tell you *what* is happening, it’s the *why* part that is a pain in the ass....Holman wrote:Much better! Thanks.

Re: I am Hospitalized!
UPDATE! I have leveled up in knowledge of my disgusting bowels.
According to my GI specialist, it's likely that I suffer from Mesenteric Panniculitis. Rare disorder FTW!
It's an autoimmune condition that flares up in the mesentery and causes inflammation, scarring (adhesions), and necrosis in some fat deposits. It comes and goes.
I've probably had it a long time, and the pain that sent me to surgery was caused my adhesions kinking the intestine and stopping blood flow. This could happen again in a few years or never.
(My major concern is the autoimmune aspect. My paternal grandmother had lupus, and I hope that's not lurking in my future.)
In related news, I had a colonoscopy this morning, and things look reasonably good in there. (Again, I have pictures.) A couple of polyps were removed and will be biopsied, but they don't immediately look threatening.
According to my GI specialist, it's likely that I suffer from Mesenteric Panniculitis. Rare disorder FTW!
Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare disorder that is part of a spectrum of diseases affecting the mesentery, a portion of the peritoneum that supports and attaches the intestines to the abdominal wall. Individuals with mesenteric panniculitis develop inflammation and necrosis of the fatty tissue of the mesentery, especially in the area of the small bowel. The condition progresses to cause chronic inflammation of the mesentery. In some patients, ongoing inflammation can result in scarring (fibrosis) of the mesentery.
In general, mesenteric panniculitis is a chronic, benign disorder with a favorable prognosis that occasionally resolves on its own (spontaneous regression). Nonetheless, symptoms of mesenteric panniculitis may be severe in some patients and can result in significant effects on quality of life. The clinical presentation of mesenteric panniculitis is highly variable. Some patients have few or no noticeable symptoms. The diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis may be made incidentally following a CT scan of the abdomen, generally for the evaluation of abdominal pain. Symptoms of mesenteric panniculitis fall into two categories. Some symptoms, such as abdominal pain, are due to the mass-like effect of mesenteric inflammation, and potentially involvement of adjacent structures including the small intestine. The second group of symptoms occurs in the presence of chronic inflammation and may include weight loss, fever, and fatigue. Some affected individuals may develop complications such as small bowel obstruction or acute abdomen. Small bowel obstruction prevents the passage of food through the intestines and can cause a variety of nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms as well as a nutrient malabsorption.
TL;DR:Evidence suggests that mesenteric panniculitis is an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune diseases occur when the body’s natural defense mechanisms such as antibodies and lymphocytes, (that are normally in place for prevention of infectious diseases and cancer), instead cause a reaction and damage to the patient’s own healthy tissue. In general, genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of autoimmune diseases. A number of factors support the hypothesis that mesenteric panniculitis is an autoimmune disease. These include the fact that biopsies of affected areas show chronic, ongoing inflammation. Additionally, systemic symptoms that are characteristic of other autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease including fever and fatigue can occur in patients with mesenteric panniculitis. Patients with mesenteric panniculitis also frequently often have a strong family history of autoimmune diseases.
