Re: I am Hospitalized!
Thank you all for the well wishes! They've meant a lot.
I'm still in the hospital but will probably rejoin society this afternoon. So far it's been recovery--there are no biopsy results yet.
This is actually the first time I've ever had surgery (other than wisdom tooth extraction), so it's a new thing for me. I had no idea there was so much equipment involved (such as the lung-like wraps pumping around my calves all night to prevent blood clots).
Anyway, I'm feeling ok. Moving up and down is delicate as of course they carved holes in my stomach muscles. I'll know more in a few days.
Presumably I will someday poop again.

Is that on your checklist of things you need to do before they'll let you leave?
My mom was in the hospital about 3 months ago for a few days and she was telling me late at night some type of robot/drone thing came in her room to check on her. I don't know if it was the meds, a person dressed as Twiki or an actual drone but I just nodded and said, "awesome".
Maybe next year, maybe no go

I'm assuming this is going to take you out of work for a fair while, so what games do you have lined up to play at home?? Great timing with the Steam sale going on now!

And what they didn't tell me was that sometimes when you are put under, that portion of your digestive system doesn't always wake up right away. Sometime it needs help.

Is there a color to be concerned with? Bright red, like cherry Kool-Aid, is fresh. Black is old. Which is better?

As a nurse, you do not want to see bright red blood. Black is old blood and generally ok.
Do not "expect" a large amount of blood unless your doctor tells you this.
GI surgery does not necessarily mean you'll poop blood. That is incorrect.

I bow to your knowledge. In my case though, they didn't say anything about it, and when I did my business for the first time I saw all the blood and started panicking, but when I brought the nurse in and told her she looked at me like I was crazy and said "Yeah, you just had colon surgery.".

Re: I am Hospitalized!
As someone who suffers from hemorrhoids and the occasional fissure, I was given the opposite advice: bright red oxygenated blood is normal, while the dark tarry stuff that comes from higher up the tube would be cause for concern. Seek advice specific to your situation.Sepiche wrote: ↑Tue Jun 26, 2018 1:25 pmI bow to your knowledge. I'm home. Haven't pooped yet!
The kids are going away to camp, though, so I was already planning on finally diving into The Witcher 3.
I will definitely have some gaming time, although my problem right now is that sitting upright in a chair is the most uncomfortable position.

But black is older blood and normally not a concern for anything actively bleeding.
Bright red in your case would probably be on the normal spectrum.
But generally speaking, after GI surgery you don't want to see much of anything that's not black.
But yes, the doctor should give you specifics on when to be concerned.

Re: I am Hospitalized!
The concern over bright red vs black isnt that clear cut. Bright red blood means it's coming from the lower GI tract, either the colon or rectum (often hemorrhoids). It's bright red when it comes out because it hasn't had time to age as it passes through your system. If you have bright red blood and no sign of hemorrhoids, the cause is usually a problem in the distal colon (tumor, AVM, diverticulum).Xmann wrote:It's specific for sure.Kraken wrote:As someone who suffers from hemorrhoids and the occasional fissure, I was given the opposite advice: bright red oxygenated blood is normal, while the dark tarry stuff that comes from higher up the tube would be cause for concern. Dark/black blood or stools are the result of bleeding that originated higher up in the GI tract and that has had time to break down as it passes through. In most cases of unexplained dark, tarry stools, the biggest concern is ruling out bleeding that originates in the stomach or small intestine...typically an ulcer, varices, or arteriovenous malformation. It can also originate from a tumor or a problem with the esophagus, but that is less common. An active bleed in the upper GI tract will present as dark stools because the blood is no longer fresh by the time it passes through and comes out the other end.
We use the color of bleeding to guide us toward finding the source, but one isn't always better than the other.

No blood, no problems, although I'm certain the stool softener helps.

Tell your wife that love means her mounting a big HDTV above the bed. You may have to refer to the “cherish and obey” clause in your marriage vows, which you no doubt insisted remain as tradition demands.Holman wrote:

Good luck with that! My wife had a hard time abiding by doctor's orders for me to stay off my feet and let her take care of me when I got a serious leg infection in the Philippines. In her mind, if I'm well enough to play games, then I can damn well cook dinner, do the dishes, clean the carpets, cut the grass, yadda yadda yadda.RuperT wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 1:41 pmTell your wife that love means her mounting a big HDTV above the bed. Careful with quoting marriage vows when trying to get the wife to hang a big heavy large screen tv above you or she may use the 'till death do us part' clause.Jeff V wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 3:05 pmGood luck with that! This is so very much my wife, too. She does not understand that it takes about 2% of my available energy to enjoy video games, and I could be wrapped in a blanket, running a fever, shivering, aching, nauseous - and still able to relax with a PC game. It's a blissful distraction from feeling miserable. To her, though, anything except huddling in bed means you're not really sick - so GTFO the computer and be productive.Jeff V wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 3:05 pmMy wife had a hard time abiding by doctor's orders for me to stay off my feet and let her take care of me when I got a serious leg infection in the Philippines.
