I am Hospitalized!

Post by Holman »

So on Saturday night I started experiencing abdominal pain that gradually grew worse. I slept from 10:00 to 1:00 a.m. And then woke up feeling worse than before. Eventually I started throwing up even though I wasn't nauseous.

By 4:30 a.m. we'd gone to the emergency room. I was assuming I had some sort of poisoning or stomach virus, but the physicians poked around and decided a CAT scan was in order. This revealed signs of bowel blockage a other tissue enlargement, and they brought in the specialists.

By Sunday afternoon they had opened my abdomen and were looking at an enflamed and enlarged mesentery (the tissue "sail" that supports and contains blood vessels feeding the intestine). Some lymph nodes there looked bad, so one was removed for a biopsy (no results yet). About a foot of intestine seemed distressed and inflamed. They also fixed a previously undiscovered hernia in passing.

So far they can't tell me for sure what all this means. The doctors have been great and the nurses angelic. I'll have to wait and see. Wish me luck!

A request: please don't offer any anecdotal diagnoses, especially dire ones (e,g. "Sounds like my relative's cancer"). I'm trying to avoid speculations on mortality just now.

Wow - heal fast!

This doesn't sound like it has potential for super powers, but I'd ask the doctors anyway. They are the experts and I hear they love answering those type of inquiries.

Good Luck!
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

I have no experience with anything like this, so no diagnosis from me. The human body is a mystery to me, but capable of amazing things.

Good luck with your...bowels? I am not even really sure what to say there. Remember, the small intestines are longer than the large intestines. Those scientists are so crazy with their confusing nomenclature!

Anyway, get healthy.

That story started off a lot like when I went into the hospital about 10 years ago. I thought I had the flu, as I was throwing up everything I ate or drank, but after a cat scan they found I had a ruptured colon.

My standing is not great, but hey, FWIW, I sent out a prayer.

My father had a similar issue when I was in grade school (2nd grade maybe?). This was so far back that they actually had large buttons (like for a jacket) on his abdomen to anchor the stitches they put through to hold the muscle layers together. He is still alive and kicking and will turn 82 in August. So I think you will be OK. From what I hear, they've improved at least a little and don't need buttons anymore.. :D
