Mid-summer holiday 2020

Post by Jeff V »

It seems like just the other day it was the start of summer holiday.

Anyone have interesting plans? We have plans to take in two suburban festivals w/fireworks Tuesday and Wednesday, but the forecast is fairly stormy (60% Tue, 40% Wed) and when it comes to getting stormed upon, we generally stay home. Wife starts work at 11 pm both days, so we might not actually stick around until the end even if we do go.

I will be off. The wife will not. The JeffVs of the world won't permit their packaged-boozemongers to rest on that day.

My wife is also working - hospitals refuse to close for the most dangerous of holidays for some reason. I'll be playing video games with the kid, which makes it much like a saturday in the middle of the week.

Going to Santa Fe for about a week on Wednesday, to see that branch of the family. Should be generally enjoyable.

Mrs Skinypupy and I just got home from spending 4 days in San Francisco for our 20th anniversary. It was fantastic, The City is truly all it’s cracked up to be.

Took another couple days off, since Wonder Twin 5.1b has appointments with specialists today and tomorrow. Hoping we can figure out what’s going on with this stupid bowel impaction nonsense.

Not sure what we’re doing for the 4th, probably just blowing up a few things in our driveway.

As always, my town celebrates the holiday the weekend before, so the actual 4th is an afterthought. The fireworks were better than average this year but the "food truck rodeo" was disappointing, with fully half of the trucks slinging ice cream and sugary drinks.

I don't get off until 11:30 Tuesday night, so no pre-holiday drinking binge for me. And since I will be working Thursday morning I will have to tow the moderation line on Wednesday.

My goal Wednesday will be to sleep in, watch some baseball, play some Mass Effect:Andromeda and then hope the neighborhood doesn't burn itself down Wednesday night.

Get off my lawn.

Plans changed slightly. Instead of heading out to a big festival Wednesday where one of my wife's friends sets up a big canopy along with a banquet of food, she made the executive decision yesterday that we will stay at home and watch our own damn town's fireworks which are launched nearby. Still waiting to hear back from our subdivision's FB group if there is a good place within the subdivision to see them so we don't have to drive about a mile or so. There's a small hill across from the elementary school that might suffice.

So one of my friends and his kids will come over. I'll BBQ chicken wings (they've become my most demanded grilled item to the exclusion of everything else) and some corn. Watermelon is already in the cooler and the beers are cold.

Can we reschedule the Mid-summer holiday to a point in time when it's not feeling like Satan's Jockstrap outside?

Thanks.

No idea what I'm doing tomorrow. Would like to blow some stuff up with the kids at some point. And/or go to the range.

Going to try to get out tonight for a few drinks with the work crew and bar hop a bit on the way home.

Tomorrow night I'll be at home though. Probably going to rain but I'll still be around to clear falling flaming debris off the roof deck.

We're celebrating by making about 5 pounds of potato salad to bring to a BBQ. With work tomorrow I suspect we'll bail before the firework displays start around 10:00 or so.

Burgers and dogs on the grill along with pasta salad I made yesterday.

A little tequila and then sitting at the dining room table to watch the East GR fireworks. Inside...no mosquitoes, no 100F heat index, no crowds.

We had a weird experience in Cracker Barrel. We're sitting there eating lunch, and suddenly this older African-American gentleman walks in from out of nowhere and announces in a great booming voice, "I just wanted to wish everyone a happy July 4th, and bless you with love and kindness." He then proceeds to sing "God Bless America" at the top of his lungs.

Now ordinarily this would be cringe-worthy, but this guy was GOOD. Halfway through people started cheering and when he finished everyone in the restaurant was clapping and whooping and hollering. He then proceeded to serenade the crowd with "America the Beautiful" and "My Country Tis of Thee" before walking out with his to-go order.

I know. Crazy, right? Going to play some boardgames with friends, drink sangria and watch the fireworks at CalExpo. We might even finish Pandemic Legacy Season 2!

Well, I still have no idea how good of a fireworks show my town puts on because it was canceled as the weathermen who predicted the storms would pass by 4-5 pm were actually about 5 hours off. At least we got to enjoy a brilliant lightning show until a heavy drizzle forced us inside.

So what's everyone doing for their mid-summer holiday this year?

My town is actually having fireworks, so later tonight we'll walk a few blocks to a park that has a pretty good view and low crowds.

There was a parade earlier...mostly police, fire, and politicians. Our congressman, Lauren Underwood, was in it. Wearing a mask. :) It actually came through the subdivision; we watched it from the front lawn of soon-to-be-departing friend's front lawn.

This afternoon going to visit a friend I haven't seen in years...another friend talked to him the other day and was invited today, turns out the guy has a pool so asked if he could get me invited too (he used to have a big party every 4th but I guess that went by the wayside years ago). He was happy to hear from me, and the kids will be happy to go swimming. They are climbing the walls now waiting to go, the invite is for 2:30, 2 hours yet (with an hour drive to get there).

Lots of grilling of various meats and veggies later but alas only the family eating the meal. Wife and daughter are out responsibly enjoying the day while I have a quiet house which suits me fine.

At least I can sit outside on this warm yet pleasant Massachusetts day before grabbing some time on the PS4 playing some FX3 pinball on a whole mess of tables I've downloaded.

House work. Got up on the roof and cleaned it off. Then hauled it all away. Next was measuring then cutting a board to fix some siding issue. I painted it and will repait it later. I wont get it up until tomorrow though. Then Monday its wash the house day after going and buying a water hose. Also Monday I need to try and get a replacement mower part. Tuesday is paint the bad spots day. Sometime after that is fix the mower and mow day.

Yesterday I did find ground beef for $3 a pound and got one pound. Cooked a couple hamburger patties from it. I shared one with the Chihuahua and gave Gus his own patty. Its their births days. the rat's too...he got peanut butter cracker.

May get to the store to buy some encased meats and veggies for the grill.

The Mrs gave the lawn a good soaking. We purchased double the usual number of sparklers and snakes and such to enjoy in our driveway with the kids, plus a pile of small fountains and a gigantic "purple rain"which we enjoyed tremendously last year.
I will have one piece of watermelon, which is my limit for the year.

We don't normally venture out to firework displays, so this will not be too much different. Its not real hot and dry, so I hope the local fire department doesn't have too rough an evening.

We grilled hamburgers, sausages, and prawns in the parking area of our apartment building with friends. Not the absolutely safest situation but relatively reasonable around here. It was 30 when we started and dropped to 22 or so after the sun went down. No fireworks but I did watch a short bit that a friend in the US filmed on their phone so I guess I'm good for the year. It was a nice excuse to get together even if the reason for the party confused the people from Taiwan and Australia.

Ending the evening with a drunk Australian repeatedly saying how cute and romantic it was that we (my wife and I) met at university and have been married since age 24 was a little odd. I mean I think it's great but I don't make a big deal out of it.

All celebrations in my area were cancelled. However, my neighborhood decided to have its own protest celebration. It sounds like the Shock and Awe campaign right now. I can hear constant streams of fireworks in all directions.

Trying to watch the big fireworks show on tv makes me want to choke the camera director.

Wide far out shot...perfect
2 seconds later CLOSE UP of sparks and smoke...tooooo close
2 seconds later partially hid behind a giant ferris wheel
2 seconds later CLOSE UP of smoke
2 seconds later the pretty far shot
CUT TO CLOSE UP!
FERRIS WHEEL

People have been lighting off fireworks for the last 3 or 4 weeks every weekend night but tonight is noticeably The Fourth of July. I don't know who these people are that drop all this cash on illegal fireworks but it's always a good show every year.

But we're looking forward to the penumbral lunar eclipse tonight more. Moon is nice and big and it's mostly clear.
