As the title says, it appears Warners is going through with a Suicide Squad 2.

And who is attached? None other than James Gunn, as writer and possible director.

I hope it succeeds beyond their wildest imagination as a giant screw you to Disney. I still think Gunn got a raw deal.

I feel like Guardians of the Galaxy is pretty good prep for writing a Suicide Squad movie. Although there are a lot of indications that the problems with DC movies originate with the studio folks, so who knows whether Gunn can handle that better than others have.

Will Smith is out

Even though his return had not been made official, sources tell Variety that Will Smith, who played Deadshot in the original, is not expected to return for the studio’s upcoming sequel. Sources say scheduling was the ultimate factor and that the decision was made on amicable terms between both sides with no hard feelings.

My understanding is that due to scheduling, Will Smith had to choose between SS2 and the Paste Pot Pete film, and so made the obvious choice.

Smith chose wisely. The franchise potential for this is through the roof.

Though the next installment in the “Suicide Squad” franchise is moving full-steam ahead with the addition of Idris Elba to the team, the movie will now move forward without one of its main characters.

Though it was previously reported that Elba would be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot in the new pic, sources now tell Variety that all parties including director James Gunn have decided to move on from the Deadshot character, with Elba playing a new character in “The Suicide Squad.”

With this decision, it looks like the only three characters expected to return are Harley Quinn with Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. Gunn is in the process of casting the remaining team members with production expected to start in the fall. The film is scheduled to bow on Aug. 6, 2021.

Now, I'm not complaining - because I thought she did pretty well in her role - but how many times is the Joker willing to let his little lady get caught and exploited by the gub'ment? I mean, the whole point of disposable heroes is that you don't need to keep re-enlisting them.

If Deadshot is just mentioned in the film and never actually shown, they could get Mark Wahlberg to take over the role. It shouldn't tax his abilities that much to play someone not there.
