Got about 6 inches of snow yesterday. Still hasn't melted. :( Though it is supposed to be back in the 60s by Thursday.

It was 93 degrees here where I live, which is near to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Day after day of near record heat. The good news is that we can spend some of each day in the pool :D.

Last year we got snowed on in Montana south of Butte about mid-September on a trip. It's the last time I saw snow :(.

TheMix, I had to look up where you live, I didn't recognized the city name. I went to college at Adam State in Alamosa. I liked Colorado back then (mid-70s) but when I drove through last year the areas near Denver seem to be really, really crowded now.

Gonna be a long and early winter, according to the Farmer's Almanac. I've already been feeling the chill these past few weeks. Doesn't help that it's also been rather cold and damn too.

In advance of a forecast hard freeze, we did an emergency harvest of all things likely to die. Now I have a shit ton of chard that needs to be eaten stat.

The basil did not survive the mild frost of the previous night. :(

Basil doesn't do well indoors, either. It's an emo herb.

Yeah, even in a window above the sink, it got bad quickly. And when you buy it cut in the clamshell packs, it lasts about a day.

Throughout the summer, I chop it up and freeze it in a hermetic canister. It lasts quite well. It will wilt when thawed, of course, so it doesn't make for a pretty garnish, but it's perfectly fine for cooking.

I cut up and froze a bunch of chives. Most of my basil usage calls for fresh leaves (bruschetta, caprese sandwich, margherita pizza, etc) and texture sort of matters. If I was just using it for sauce, that'd probably be fine. Maybe next years I'll freeze some and use it for pesto.

I mean really though, Austin should only hit 46 for like 2 weeks in the middle of January! I don't usually even break out a jacket until Thanksgiving...this does not please me. 😕

I rely on the fall for 'window weather' to help pay for the holidays. I usually get six to eight weeks where it is cool enough to turn off the air conditioner, but not cold enough to turn on the heater. It saves me a ton of money that I'm able to put back. This year though - I got five days. We went from the 90s to the 50s like we saw a speed trap, and it isn't supposed to go back up.

Can't believe no one is talking about the snow storm that completely paralyzed NY/NJ yesterday - total chaos everywhere. Major highways were closed and there's reports of 10+ hour commutes. Coming? No,yesterday it arrived and we weren't ready.

Yeah that was the worst storm response in my lifetime and not a mention. Even NJ's local news soft-peddled it but I suspect why from a P&R perspective...

I am seeing conflicting reports regarding the forecast. I thought it wasn't accurate and that it was much heavier and wetter than they predicted. I dunno. I do know that someone screwed up and it wasn't just one town. To have that widespread level of failure is rather impressive.

We expected a coating to an inch here before changing over to sleet and rain, and ended up getting several inches of snow instead. I decided to make the short drive to the T station in my Miata to pick up Wife last night, just to see how it would handle minor snow. Those summer tires get no traction at all. Fortunately I have a lot of experience driving RWD cars in snow, and find a little fishtailing kind of fun when there's no traffic to speak of. But I won't do that again unless I specifically want to slip and slide.

Woke up to find plenty of slush that was supposed to wash away overnight still on the ground. This is the earliest I can remember ever getting accumulating snow here. Ordinarily we might get a flurry or two before Tgiving, but we rarely see a measurable snowfall until mid December.

1000 crashes and 1900 calls for aid by the State Police (that doesn't include any local response)!
"I offer our apologies to New Jerseyans who experienced a difficult commute home," said department of transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti who along with Murphy blamed a forecast which predicted no more more than 4 inches of snow for most of North Jersey.

"I understand completely the frustration," Murphy added. "It came at us much stronger and hit us much harder than any person or organization had forecasted."
2 fatalities attributed to the road conditions, so far.

Not sure why I was able to get forecasts almost a week out that showed 5-8” but the Governor’s Office couldn’t get access to that sort of top secret information. As near as I can tell though, this was a total failure on the part of everyone everywhere.

There is absolutely no excuse for a storm like this having been able to wreak this kind of havoc.

The first blizzard of the season came early and strong in the Chicago area Sunday night. More than a foot of snow fell in northeastern Illinois with winds blowing at 50 mph, causing whiteout conditions. Power outages are widespread, and travel disruptions continue Monday morning as the city begins to clean up.

More than 1,700 flights were canceled into or out of Chicago’s O’Hare international and Midway airports as of Monday morning, FlightAware reported. Thousands of flight delays continue to trickle through the U.S. airport network as holiday passengers try to get home. The Sunday after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year, according to AAA.

Commonwealth Edison, which serves Illinois, was reporting that 100,000 customers in Cook County alone were without power Monday morning.

As much as 13 inches of snow fell on the Chicagoland area from Sunday to Monday morning. McHenry County, northwest of Chicago, posted the highest totals. O’Hare airport reported 7.4 inches, and Midway Airport received 3.4 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Yeah, I'm just thrilled to be flying tomorrow. Thankfully it's a direct to DC and I don't have to connect anywhere in the midwest.

Pfft, not even worth mentioning. I shoveled at 9 pm Sunday night and the 50 mph winds were annoying, not as annoying as the slush that weighed about 50 lbs per shovel full. By yesterday morning the winds were a more manageable 25 mph, but the slush had frozen to ice and had to be scraped up. And was still very heavy. Including the slightly slower drive, I was about 10 minutes late to the office.

Now, I don't own a hat, but yesterday morning the windchill was enough to make it a bit uncomfortable on my ears. My son was amused that I used his Mickey Mouse hat (complete with dual pompoms). I was the first one out in the morning, so no neighbors witnessed that travesty.

We are supposed to be getting a winter event this weekend. It's unclear right now how bad it will be, but the rain is supposed to start on Saturday and change over to ice/snow overnight and into Sunday. The mountains nearby might get all snow. Yesterday, the European model went off the reservation and was predicting 23" of snow. That would shut this place down for at least a week, maybe 10 days.

It wouldn't be a big deal except my daughter was supposed to go to a writing camp with the Girl Scouts up in the mountains. She really likes writing and we've been trying to find a way to nurture that (a challenge for her science and engineering oriented parents). Here's hoping the cold front doesn't sink so far south and it ends up as all rain by us.

It's been in the SSA list since 2004. Last year showed 14 males given the name.

Your top X names for 2017 are:

Xavier
Xander
Xzavier
Xaiden
Xavi
Xayden
Xavion
Xavian
Xzander
Xavien

I look forward to one of them becoming a supervillain.

Because it is stupid. We already have people pronounce my son's name ex-sander. Using both almost guarantees it. Maybe that is what they are going for.

Also, just to be on topic, it wasn't a winter storm, but it was 29 degrees this morning (Fahrenheit!)... get me some of that global warming!
