The Once and Future Queen

Post by Grifman »

Eight year old Swedish girl finds a 1500 year old sword in a lake:

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyl ... ga-vanecek
People on the internet are saying I am the queen of Sweden, because in the legend of King Arthur, he was given a sword by a lady in a lake, and that meant he would become king. I am not a lady – I’m only eight – but it’s true I found a sword in the lake. I wouldn’t mind being queen for a day, but when I grow up I want to be a vet. Or an actor in Paris.

Not the first to state it, but providing the obligatory quote:
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government

Isn't she the Lady in the Lake with the sword, though? Shouldn't the rightful monarch be whomever she gives the sword to?

Given the current resident of the WH, I’m no longer as sure of this as I once was.

If that's Excalibur, I'm mildly disappointed:

Swords aren't generally meant to be stored underwater.

Well yeah. That why I said "Excalibur" and not "a sword." I am by no means disappointed in a 1,500 year-old sword looking like that.

Scholarship
This paper discusses the deposition of weapons in English rivers and wetlands during the Viking Age. ... It is suggested here that ‘liminal’ depositions in Viking Age Scandinavia provide an interpretative model for these finds. Given the context of endemic conflict and territorial consolidation within which they may have been deposited in England, this material can shed new light on attitudes to landscapes subject to conflict and consolidation.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

If stubbing ones toe on weapons found in lakes makes one royalty, we probably have 10,000 candidates for King and Queen of Chicago.

Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government! Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony!
