Horror comedies

Post by Skinypupy »

Disclaimer: I’m a complete wuss and don’t like being scared. Actual horror movies are completely lost on me, and I generally don’t enjoy them at all. However, when it’s presented in a comedy context, I find that I tend to enjoy them quite a bit

I’m almost finished with Season 2 of Ash vs Evil Dead, and have really liked it. This is a genre that I’ve looked into on a very limited basis (see above about being scared) but am wondering what gems I may have missed. A few that I’ve seen and loved:

- Cabin in the Woods
- Tucker & Dale vs Evil
- Evil Dead (1 was a bit too horror-y for me, but I loved 2, AoD, and the series)
- Shaun of the Dead
- Deathgasm (probably my favorite, due too the heavy metal theme)
- What We Do in the Shadows (definitely more comedy than horror)

I know there’s a bunch of horror buffs here, just wondering if you have any other recommendations in the horror comedy genre. TIA

- Re-Animator (1985)
- The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
- Fright Night (1985) (Damn 1985 was an amazing year!)
- Teeth (2007)
- The Babysitter (2017)
- Krampus (2015)
- Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)
- House (1986)
- Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2007)
- Slither (2006)
- Night of the Creeps (1986)
- Hatchet (2007)
- Tremors (1990)
- Dead Alive (1992) - warning - super gory but in the over the top Ash vs Evil Dead way

Fright Night (1985) - though might tilt more toward horror than comedy
An American Werewolf in London (1981) - still the best werewolf transformation scene ever filmed, IMHO

I know Fright Night was already mentioned, but I loved it. YK's list is solid! I would imagine so many of the 1980s movies might be considered comedic at this point. Movies like The Gate or Lost Boys that have that pure 80s sheen to them. :D

I've been watching the Eli Roth series on AMC covering horror and Joe King made the case that after the first Friday the 13th movie, you could almost consider the others slapstick comedy.

The Howling might have an even better transformation scene. Both were excellent.

Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein (probably the best of the older films), meet the Mummy, meet the Invisible Man
The Cat and the Canary and Ghost Breakers for Bob Hope.

Buffy and Angel if you're looking at TV shows.
The Scream series
Stuff with Bruce Campbell
Elvira's Haunted Hills

All of them?

I saw the new Halloween the other night and it was all I could do to not LOL throughout the movie. My son desperately wants to watch a scary movie but everything I've tried he's found "super funny." Much like my views on soccer ("daddy, I don't want to play, it's super boring!"), it must be a hereditary thing. Oh, The Thing is pretty funny too.

I'll second "Killer Klowns from Outer Space." Fun movie, excellent sound track (my son became a Dickies fan from the theme song of this movie as well as their cover of the Banana Splits theme song). Zombieland was also pretty funny and I don't think has been mentioned yet.

No, that was post #235 in which JeffV announces that he and his family are incapable of such human frailties as fear. I anxiously await the post in which he derides the rest of us for our weakness in requiring oxygen to survive.

Wasn't Maximum Overdrive in the same class as Tremors?

Also aren't all of the Troma movies consider over the top gore comedies?

Trying to remember, as I was never a horror movie watcher but some of the comedies pre-satirizing existing movies I really enjoyed. I just can't remember. Though I'd also wonder how well they held up nearly 30 years later.

Also it was only this year after seeing Bab5 and recognizing Wayoun, etc... from Deep Space 9, that I found out Herbert West is all of these aliens. I thought Robert Englund was the guy in everything behind make up but Jeffry Combs managed to have one kickass career without me putting two and two together through most of it.

Get it right, it's contrived faux fear. And my wife certainly succumbs to it. Just me and the kids think they are hysterical.

Do not watch Maximum Overdrive unless you are planning on going full MST3k on it. Absolutely dreadful movie.

On the other hand, Tremors is fantastic (I've only seen the first one).

I'll throw in:

Creepshow (1982)

with the Crypt Keeper and Stephen King's hilarious turn as a farmer who finds a meteor...

Not sure if The Night Stalker tv shows with Darren McGavin are available, but those were pretty funny (and the first one was kind of creepy too).

+1 on Todd & the Book of Pure Evil. It was fantastic and very funny.

I forgot to add Repo: The Genetic Opera to my list. I only heard of it because Ogre (of SP) is one of the stars, but it’s really fun. Also has Anthony Stewart Head, Sarah Brightman, Paul Sorvino, and Paris Hilton. Hilton is surprisingly funny, and her, um, facelift scene makes the entire movie worth it. Word of warning: It’s literally an opera (albeit a very fucked up one), so your tolerance for that may vary.

I’ve apparently got lots of watching to do. :horse:
