Alex Smith suffers similar injury to Joe Theismann 33 years to the day.

Post by msduncan »

Theismann was at the game looking on, and it happened. 33 years to the day.

The score for the game today? 23 - 21

The score for the game exactly 33 years ago to the day when Joe Theismann got injured in almost the same way? 23-21
It's 109 first team All-Americans.
It's a college football record 61 bowl appearances.
It's 34 bowl victories.
It's 24 Southeastern Conference Championships.
It's 15 National Championships.

At some places they play football. At Alabama we live it.

Both took place on the 40 yard line as well. The similarities are kinda eerie, tbh.

Would be like me starting a thread to say Alabama and The Citadel were tied 10-10 at halftime yesterday rather than posting in the NCAA thread!

I disagree, but even if it were, so what? Have you seen some of the threads we start around here? This is a pretty unique occurrence and rather noteworthy even for people who don't frequent the NFL thread.

It's where Alabama players go to live out their twilight years.

In pr0ners defense, without pushback the forums would have fallen to chaos long ago.

It's a widely known rule to put all football posts in one thread. been that way for years.

This post really has little to do with football and most to do with the eerie coincidences surrounding this injury. I separated it out because there are plenty of people who might find it interesting who never peek into the NFL thread. (including me)

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often in the NFL. I'm guessing he's out for the season? :P

I'm perfectly fine with the extra threads, although I do wish people would put a [Football] in front of them. I've lost track of the number of threads I've read, re-read, and finally had to google to figure out what was being talked about. Name-dropping is only meaningful to people who are already fans.

This thread needs a poll!

Also, it is fine putting it outside of the current season football thread. I don't think we are at risk of not being able to find the music or drinking thread due to all the football injury threads.

It's amazing how far our viewpoints on sports injuries and bad hits has come as a nation. It used to be that hard hits and big injuries were glorified and talked about everywhere. The NFL used to license and publish clip tapes of hard hits and bad injuries and this was considered entertaining. Now? It's still around but much much more niche.

PS: I don't like sports. Never saw the attraction in watching. But this is of particular interest even to the non sports fan.

Sounds like things are going from bad to worse for Alex. :(

My curiosity about Alex Smith's silence evoked a tip, which prompted some research, which yielded more info, which feels solid. I'm told Smith indeed still in hospital with post-op infection. Will likely require re-intervention, incl possibly "partial reconstruction."

I feel for him - met him as a rookie at an elite 8 game in Oakland, and he was really nice.

Also, Colt McCoy broke his leg for the skins too. I think he's kind of cursed too - I still remember him getting injured on the first drive of the game against Alabama in the BCS title game.

Wasn't RG3's injury there also something broken in his leg (ankle tho, maybe)?

A very detailed article about what's going wrong with Smith's leg, and how it's increasingly unlikely he'll ever play again.
The early news of infection was concerning. The word of multiple debridement surgeries to clean up necrotic (dead) tissue and help cure the infection are normal and hand in hand with intravenous antibiotics and that in and of itself didn't mean a longer timeline for recovery, even if it was a difficult infection like MRSA.

However, a patient typically goes home within two days of such surgery, and Smith is in the hospital three weeks after his Nov. 18 injury.

Now, the latest news of the need to remove the plates and screws ratchets up the worry and delays the recovery timeline.

Expect to hear word next that Smith has an external fixator (a system of pins/wires with rods, like an erector set similar to the look of scaffold on the outside of a building) applied to his leg. This is necessary as the plates/screws holding the fracture were removed. A cast would not work due to the need to access the wound. The apparatus looks archaic and scary but is necessary in these situations.

The original implants needed to be removed, as once metal is contaminated, it makes it very hard to cure the infection without its removal.

It will be multiple weeks before more definitive fracture fixation can finally be done.

Smith is headed for several more surgeries.
Jesus, this is horrific.
