I'm sure nobody in Paris has thought of the best way to put this fire out. Thank God we have President Trump's massive intelligence at our disposal!

Man, that is awful. I just clambered all over that last month in Unity.

That is absolutely the best tweet we can expect from Trump.

It's reassuring knowing that the president is that annoying fuck that comments on every news article knowing exactly what should be done. ;)

Can this be the last time we mention Trump in a thread about a fire in a French landmark?

Just think of it as job creation. It took them 182 years to build it the first time. And the folks building The Sagrada Familia will need something to do when they finish in seven years.

I'd really like to see that one, it's almost like the architect was a cross between Salvador Dalí & M.C. Escher.

Just awful about Notre Dame.

Trump is an idiot but watching them spray pitiful streams of water around the edges does make one wonder why a helicopter bucket in the middle isn't a good idea.

Here's hoping it was accidental. The cathedral's stonework will be fine and the wooden parts can be rebuilt, but the relics housed within are gone forever. Very sad day for history and architecture.

Air-delivered water is for forest fires out in the middle of nowhere. Paris has the infrastructure to deliver water to two million people every day, so a single firetruck is worth 100 planes.

I can't get my head around this tragedy. I just watched the spire fall down.

Heat rises. It's dangerous/tricky to fly over.

The flames may be coming from an area water won't reach.

The wall supports are weakened by the fire - if you hit it with tons of water from above, you'll likely cause a massive collapse of the external structure.

I was fortunate enough to get to see it back in '95. Amazing structure, truly one of the wonders of architecture. This is tragic news.

Initial reports are saying it might have been caused by something related to renovation efforts that were being done.

Imagine, it survived how many centuries of being lit by candlelight only to burn now.

I hope there weren't any tourists up there, seems I remember it as being a goodly trek up there.

I've read that much of the art and statues had been removed already as part of the renovations.

Tragically, the magnificent rose windows have been destroyed as the lead melted and the glass pieces fell. :(

One firefighter is seriously injured.
The stone structure has been saved, will take 3-4 hours to put out the remaining fire.

Ugh, but at least there will be a solid chance for a very expensive restoration. I studied for awhile in Budapest and it is amazing how they basically had to rebuild all of their monuments post WW II. I really hope they can save it!

In a sad coincidence, today there was a fire damaging the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, the third-holiest place in Islam and an incalculably valuable historical site.

The entire place burns except for the northern belfry and they call that a save? Damn thats a huge loss. I was just reading and watching videos on it last year.. Huge amount of lumber went into that place.

It's definitely a save vs. the collapse of the entire structure. The two towers being spared is definitely a win by the fire department.

That a wooden-interior structure in a major city in Europe survived for 900 years in an achievement in itself. Think of the wars and accidents that have afflicted so many cities since. London in 1666 basically burned to the ground, and that was more than 500 years after Notre Dame was begun.

Paris has benefited greatly from its status as historical/cultural capital. In WW2 neither power was willing to bomb it even when it made sense to do so.

When we climbed into the bell tower, it was hard to even move around in the lattice of massive, ancient wooden beams. Only young, fit tourists (as we were at the time) could even make it up there. I'm not surprised that it burned as hot and fast as it did...and I'm grateful that I got to see it.
