not sure the kids these days are going to care, and making it animated will scare off the baby boomers who were the core audience of the original

Not just the Boomers. I'm in the Generation X group and find this mildly repellent compared to the original and movies. My favorite is the first one starring Raul Julia and Anjelica Houston. Side note, I did not know Raul Julia died in 1994. I wasn't really paying attention to anything back then.

My kids might like it, though, as long as it's interesting enough. Neither one goes in for movies just because they're animated.
