And yet another sad pet story...

Post by Lassr »

Had to have our dog euthanized Friday. Koda was almost 14 years old, which is very good for a 100 lb dog. He had a type of skin cancer (or blood cancer, can't recall) that formed blood blisters, and we would have them removed every time they would appear but he got too old for anesthesia, last year it took him a very long time to recover. His arthritis was getting bad and you could tell it was very painful to get up and walk some days, and he was almost completely deaf and was easy frightened by things because his world had changed so much the past year. I noticed a few weeks ago that another cancer was forming, and it was growing fast, and when they burst it bleeds profusely. So the wife and I along with the vet decided it was time. I know it was the right decision, just doesn't make it any easier. He's been one of the best dogs we've ever owned. Luckily i was able to take off Friday and spend the day with him but he wouldn't go for a walk because of how he was scared of everything. So I brushed him, pat him, and sat with him as he slept.

Here's my wife taking a selfie in the vet's office:

Im very sorry. Handsome fella. That decision must be one of the hardest on the planet. Best to you and your family. You'll see him again one day. It will be no time at all to him.

Big pets are the best but they do break your heart by not lasting as long. I'm sorry to hear this.

Hate seeing sad threads. Don't always reply cause they make me too sad just thinking about them.

Condolences to you and your family, at least you were able to spend a little time with him at the end.

I think i know the cancer you are talking about and my dog had that and was why we said goodbye to him almost 2 years ago at 13.

14 is a good long dog life and he was clearly well loved. Sorry for your loss but the fact we can give them release and be there with them is one last act of love.

I'm posting this under spoiler tags because you have to be emotionally prepared for it.

A popular Twitter figure had to put his dog to sleep this week, and his followers have been expressing sympathy. One post in the thread is a cartoon that's beautiful, reassuring, and heartbreaking all at the same time. I saw it between classes today and starting crying in the hallway.

Here it is (you'll need to click on the tweet to see the full image):

Since Gus died I've seen a few memes that hit me in the feels. Ordinarily that's hard to do, but I've been vulnerable lately. That one's good. This one gets me, even though I don't believe the premises behind it.

Gus always acted like he was doing me a favor by coming in, and he only came in for me. If there were a heaven, that would totally be him.
