North American Insurance...scam?

Post by Daehawk »

Anyone know about North American Insurance or a check from No Am Senior Benefits?

A man came by doing a insurance survey. No personal info required and you get a $20 check. Figured I could use it why not. There were questions but no bank or SS# or anything. More along the lines of age, do I have insurance. From the questions and online study it seems to be a place that offers you a check to sit and listen to them do their offer and such. I repeated NO each time I was asked if I wanted more info sent or anything of that nature. After about a 20 min survey / offer I got my check and that was that.

It seems a real check. Im not one to bank a check then use the money until it clears. But I got to thinking. Could this be some way to get bank info? Or perhaps like others online a way to see I DO have a bank account and them mail me more info? He had my email and phone already. I can block anything there if thats all it is. But someone online mentioned if you cash the check then you auto agree to enroll in their benefit insurance and they can auto withdraw payments. Can that happen? I need this $20 for food week after this one. Not kidding I need it.

Im thinking I could take it to a local fast cash place that charges a % of the check to cash it. I could get some food with whats left. Im not sure the % now. My wife always handles that place.

North American Senior Benefits is NOT affiliated with North American Insurance.

That's probably not going to happen, but I think by signing the check you are agreeing to receive more info, so they'll contact you again. Also, if the check bounces, you'll be on the hook for the amount plus the NSF fee that your bank charges. Is there any small print around the signature area on the back of the check, instructing you to put your phone # down or any other contact information? If you don't, chances are they will refuse to honor the check.

Theres a place for a phone number but he already had that so wouldn't be like I was giving it away. Plus if I do get calls Im going to block them. Email Ill spam it all and if they mail me stuff I have a shredder.

What does the check say? If you opt in to something by cashing it, I would imagine it states that somewhere on the check or EoP.

That said, even if it looks OK, is it worth $20 for the gamble of the potential headache? Entirely your call.

I see no other suspicious stuff on it. Its a Mutual of Omaha check.

Well I have $20 something in the bank and $1 in my wallet. I get my check the 3rd. I will have $100 free then for the month. Cant use it all on food though cause SNAP benefits come the 11th. Sure is a lot of juggling in life. My poor wife did a hellofa job and I never knew this stuff before. I need dog food tomorrow and it will be $22. I could tough it out and eat less or use paper towels in the bathroom..but $20 would be helpful. Maybe I should wait. I got a $10 check refund back from bankruptcy too. I could use it.

I count any time somebody calls or knocks on my front door a scammer.

Wisdom from the old-timer. There's no such thing as a free lunch (or free $20). It's anyone's guess as to what you're agreeing to by cashing that check.

Also, how does this is any way help you in November? December? Bigger picture my man, bigger picture.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Ditto, if I haven't initiated the contact I don't want it. Sometimes even after I've initiated the contact I don't want it. LOL

This is how I feel. It has taken time but I think I finally have my wife thinking this way as well. We may miss actual opportunities but the fact is you can't really tell which are the scams and which aren't. But anyone cold calling me is going to get the cold shoulder. Period.

Anyone cold calling me rarely gets acknowledged, either by phone or at the door. And the odd times that they do net me, they are on a short timer for a hangup, or a, "No, thank you," and a closing door.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

I have contemplated getting one of these.

Those may have worked some in the very olden days but Im pretty sure by the 70s phones were volume locked or something so it didn't hurt. Haha even my in laws kept a metal coaches whistle hanging at the phone for that stuff.

So, the $20 check is safe. It's only your other checks that are a scam. Good thing I know who to trust now!

That is basically my philosophy. My wife says I am rude to people who come to the door but it's not like I asked them to come by. I will maybe buy your girl scout cookies but I am not going to waste my time listening to your spiel about why the power company is robbing me and how I need solar.

And now I feel stupid for not noticing how old this was. I am not answering threads anymore. And get off my lawn.

How is there an endless supply of phone banks for weird scams, and no company I ever call can put a human on the phone. Hire the scammers! Let them actually work for Marriott instead of pretending they do!
