Transatlantic speed record smashed by...747.

Post by LawBeefaroni »

The fine print.
British Airways set a new New York–London subsonic commercial aircraft speed record on 9 February with the BA112 landing in London 4 hours 56 minutes after departing New York. Accomplished with a Boeing 747-400, the flight took advantage of a well-placed and strong jet stream to reach London in under 5 hours.
Flight is usually over 6 hours but because of a massive tailwind it arrived quite early.

Ground speed was approaching 800 MPH but airspeed was only mach 0.86.
Because the speed of sound is relative to the air mass in which the aircraft is traveling, the flight does not ‘break the sound barrier’.
Which means tailwind speed was 100mph+?

And yet long jump and sprinting records are given asterisks when assisted by altitude/tailwinds.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Saw that. Its more likely the entire plane was taken by aliens and experimented on then accidentally returned earlier in time than they meant to. :)

Maybe they took the direct route across the flat earth, and forgot to go circular to keep up the hoax.

FWIW, BA holds the other record too... The supersonic record, with the Concorde... 2:52:59

For this flight...
Which means tailwind speed was 100mph+?
200+ according to the CNN citing.

Apparently a Virgin Airways A350 was just a minute slower and landed just a few minutes before the BA flight.

NWS
Jet streams vary in height of four to eight miles and can reach speeds of more than 275 mph (239 kts / 442 km/h).

And the winner of the tournament won the controllers what were opened for the tournament (worth $80), and $20 in cash. Second place was a can of coke and an autographed picture of Gord. Third place was $20.

The Gord likes to remind people that second place is just the first loser.

Nice. I'd forgotten about The Gord. That site should be a national treasure.

I was thinking about the scene from Archer, but I couldn't find a video clip.

From memory (I tracked it down finally):
Archer: I forgot you won the Olympic gold medal in men's downhill.
Gillette: Well, ass, it was giant shalom and I only took bronze.
Archer: So? You lost?
Gillette: I came in third.
Archer: Which is last.
Gillette: Which is third...
Archer: Last.
Gillette: In he world.
Archer: You lost. Geeze, get over it.
