[Doubt] NFL Draft 2020

Post by Jaymann »

It's 17 days away and we need a break from viral mania. Most likely all NFL facilities will not be open so the draft starting 4-23 will probably be held 100% remotely. The latest scuttlebutt says teams may be shying away from Tua's injury history, and the Dolphins may trade the house to move up to number 1 and take Joe Burrow. This means Tua could drop to the Chargers at #6, though the Bengals could still grab him at #5.

The Chargers may still need to choose between Justin Herbert and Jordan Love. Given their conservative nature, I think they go for Herbert.

But if it's remote, how will people be able to boo whatever the Jets do?

The Bears it seems will have a choice between a case of Moon Pies and a case of the clap. What will they do...

That would be both of their picks in this year's draft. How did they lose so many picks? Does anyone remember?

To quote a site I saw: "The Bears traded their first and third-round picks to the Raiders in the Khalil Mack deal — and their fourth-round pick to the Patriots in the David Montgomery trade." So their draft this year might not yield much, I suppose.

I'd be shocked if the Bengals traded down. Trading down, then taking a QB at a lower pick really only works if you have a great history of making shrewd draft picks. If you don't have such a history then what you wind up doing is missing out on a sure thing in exchange for making extra picks which all turn out to be wasted picks.

Wow, you said it! Looking at their draft history, you'd almost have to try to draft as bad as they have over the last 20 years or so. Maybe 10-12 players who made any big impact and that's it. Yikes.

Pretty sure he means trading the #1 pick for one Mr. Mitchell Trubisky...

It would be rough if the Bears had to give up on Tru, but Cincinnati deserves him more. I'll reluctantly accept their #1 pick.

Well fark. Cowherd is saying the Patriots will trade up to #3 and take Tua. That leaves Justin Herbert going to the Dolphins and the Chargers will be left with Jordan Love. I hope he has all the potential some keep touting.

Doesn't matter. Stid is inexpensive. It is against type to pay a ton (in draft picks) to get a player whom they would then have to pay a ton (of money).

I mean it would be a perfect match. System already in place that kept Brady from getting hit a lot. So maybe it would keep Tua safe, but I agree, it's not the Patriots MO

I really like the Chargers' new uniforms.

I find the Patriots' new ones to be unobjectionable, but hardly inspired. I feel no desire to rush out and buy one.

Patriots trade Gronk and 7th to Bucs for a 4th. Gronk said he wanted to come back and play with Brady. Pending a physical.

I'm happy for him, but also I'd hate to see him get (more) hurt.

I'm inclined to see it more as a vote for Brady, though that's a part of it as well. Gronk has said that he would only play with Brady, and declined a trade to the Lions a couple years ago because he wanted to stay with Brady.

Yeah, it is possible that Gronk is not the best tight end on the Bucs right now. That said, dropping down three rounds in order to pick up a hall of fame tight end with an existing connection to your new hall of fame QB seems like a good move.

I guess Arians needs to learn to use the TE now with Gronk, he has a great one in OJ Howard but Arians has never featured the TE in his offenses. I hope they trade Howard to a team that will use him.

Pats have no cap space. If they get Howard, it'll be after he's a FA and signed to the vet minimum. Which he'd never take given the roster.

On ESPN this morning they said the same thing. But they also said Arians is a smart guy who knows that Brady likes using a two TE set and likes to get rid of the ball quicker.

Gronk is beat up. Therefore it makes sense to me that they'd keep a good second TE. What they should do is use Gronk sparingly during the season, more as a decoy. The second TE will then get most of the work, which should keep the second TE happy since he'll get to show what he can do. Then hopefully Gronk is still healthy for the post season push where they can really use whatever he has left in the tank.

I'm not sure where anyone is getting the impression that OJ Howard is good. He's been a complete bust at this point. Sure, he was a high draft pick, but he's averaged 30 receptions for 500 yards and 4 TDs over his first three years. This is on a team that was a top 5 offence last year. Maybe it's a "change of scenery" kind of deal, but he is certainly not "good" at this point.

Does he have other tight endly skills, such as blocking? It seems if the offence did not feature a tight end, he can still be a good one, just not utilized overmuch as a pass catcher.

I've spent the better part of the last two decades hating Tom Brady, but strangely, now that he's a Buc -- and even more, now that he and Gronk are Bucs -- I'm really excited to see how he does this season. To be clear, I'm an Eagles fan, not a Bucs fan in the least. But I hate the Pats through and through, and I always hated Brady as the face of the Pats (and, to be completely honest, I also just hated him out of spite and envy  ).

But now that he's a Buc, all bets are off! And how much would it irk NE fans to see Brady and Gronk win another SB . . . for the Bucs! :D

In moments of honest reflection, I've known Brady is the GOAT for several years now. And now I can actually root for him, or, at least, not actively root for him to fail.

FWIW I think Patriots fans would be happy to have Brady and Gronk win a SB with the Bucs. Obviously the first choice would be the Patriots, but if it's not the Patriots (and it seems unlikely that the Patriots are going to make a SB run this year, but who knows) then I think the Bucs will be the second rooting choice for many / most Pats fans.

It'd be much tougher if Brady had gone to another AFC east team, or some other notable rival, like the Ravens.

Kurth wrote: Thu Apr 23, 2020 12:37 am I've spent the better part of the last two decades hating Tom Brady, but strangely, now that he's a Buc -- and even more, now that he and Gronk are Bucs -- I'm really excited to see how he does this season.

Agreed on all points.
