And in some when you call them, they come out and look at the tree and see "not my problem" and drive away. I have had downed (Telephone? Cable?) wire for over two years. Edison, ATT, Comcast have all said, "not my line and the limbs aren't where we need to care" and then drive away. One would think it would be mandatory to an annual inspection of lines every year if you run something on them. Also one would think a line down for two years would be noticed by somebody.

But yeah, the utilities all can trim without permission and your can get in big trouble if you block access.

Well, good news for somebody north of us, I saw a convoy of power trucks on I-95 heading north this morning. Meanwhile we’re getting a second day of massive downpours. We got more than four inches yesterday.

We are Farmington CT (Hartford County)... just got a call from the town of Bloomfield letting me know the public works crew is out and removing debris, working with Eversource Electric, blah, blah, blah. Appreciate the 2 Emails today from Eversource keeping me up to date.
I’m getting ready to empty the freezer and bring to my aunt’s freezer which has power. She lives 3 minutes away from us! The fridge has spoiled but moved a few things to a cooler that we can keep here at least.

Banking on at least 4 days without power :( This is almost day 2.

This depends. In rural areas there is too much work and this cycle happens. In more suburban areas (like mine) I get a door hanger that they are coming out. They need signatures but they'll roll a tree crew through to do the entire street every few years here. I've been through at least 3 cycles of this since Sandy. FWIW this is PSEG which is heads and shoulders better than First Energy. First Energy doesn't do tree maintenance. They don't upgrade equipment. They just pocket the money. NJ should probably consider a forced sale of the territory for their performance over the last decade.
We also have somewhere around 20 million Ash trees in our state, all currently at risk for destruction from the Emerald Ash borer. I have no doubts weakened Ash trees were part of the mix yesterday.
I heard about that. Another problem is we got a good soaking rain a week ago and then the night before so it loosened the soil up pretty well.

All true. In case anyone wants to read up on what makes NJ so fun, from an overview article posted today. ~3 days for most service to return. I don't want to freak out Octavious, but a little bird told me it could be up to 7 days for his town. Not sure what happened over there, but I'm guessing it was a mess.

Of note from this article (all the way at the end):
“Every time we have a storm, the power goes out. The damage and outages that this tropical storm has caused is a clear-cut example as to why we need to modernize and fix our grid,” he said.

...

“Unfortunately, we experienced the worst. Our luck ran out,” he said, noting that at the peak of Superstorm Sandy, which brought historic damage to the state, 2.7 million utility customers were without power.

At the peak of Tuesday’s storm, 1.4 million people were in the dark.

“New Jersey was probably one of the hardest hit states,” the BPU president said.
Prediction - there will be a storm in NJ over the next 365 days that knocks out power for another 500,000+ people. And nothing will have changed by the time the next 1+ million person outage storm rolls through.

I'm frequently glad that we have a municipal power company with its own generating plants and an aggressive tree-trimming program. The juice doesn't go out very often, and when it does it's back up in a matter of hours. Munis make great policy and economic sense...so of course they're illegal in most of the country. Can't have socialism competing with commercial power companies.

My old town has an independent power muni. They sold out to buy through the corp for 15 years.
Since June 1, 2004, LP&L has been a total requirements customer of SPS, meaning that 100 percent of the power provided to LP&L customers has been purchased from SPS through the West Texas Municipal Power Agency. As approved by regulators, SPS’s contract with LP&L to provide total requirements wholesale service will expire on June 1, 2019. To replace the total requirements service, LP&L will acquire capacity and energy supply through a 170 megawatt partial-requirements wholesale contract signed with SPS in 2010; a 100 megawatt wind contract through its membership with West Texas Municipal Power Agency; 114 megawatts of LP&L-owned generating plants; and the 400 megawatt transition contract signed today with SPS.
...
Lubbock Power & Light is the third largest municipal electric utility in Texas and has been serving the citizens of Lubbock since 1917. LP&L serves more than 104,000 electric meters and owns and maintains 4,936 miles of power lines and three power plants in and around the City of Lubbock.

I don't see any logical reason my power should be out that long. My entire street is totally fine. It's ridiculous. They have told us nothing. Couldn't book a hotel tonight as they are all gone. I'm so sick of this crap. I did find places for the next two days, but how how many days do I want to book? Could be a day, could be a week no idea.

Very high chance. I sort of want to scream at that NJ.com article you posted because it is the usual. All excuses. Somehow failures get passed off as some unique quirk of our state. This one is fun because it is so stupid. Lots of overhead lines and trees! Yeah that's unique to NJ.

I do know that during Sandy I stopped to speak with a guy that was from Tennessee or Arkansas - definitely a southern state. I was helping him with directions as he was checking poles and equipment. He said he had been working in this business for 20+ years at that point and had never seen anything like what he was being asked to inspect and repair in NW NJ . He pretty much said running electrical service with suspended wires with all the trees around was insane.

There might be a main or major substation that was hit or was disabled and they can't get parts or can't get to it because of flooding or trees. I would hope your Mayor, Chief of Police and/or local OEM director are keeping you informed.

(I'll pause here for laughter)

I did look and your town does a Nixle service, but it's not saying anything about estimates. Beyond frustrating that the best that anyone can say at this point is "hopefully Friday".

I was in that business for awhile in a risk role but mostly cybersecurity. I did have to deal with NERC/FERC stuff. As I remember it, overhead distribution is by far the most common form in the rural United States. IIRC only about 25% of any new construction anywhere is underground. And that's overwhelmingly urban. Still some places are better than others. I think Florida pretty much always buries for instance in new construction. What he might have been talking about it is the equipment itself which is prehistoric - doubly so in the JCPL region. It's old. It fails a lot even when trees aren't falling on them and it is more expensive to replace and maintain.

Around here they keep the lines clear. Some trees look a bit funny as the side facing the lines are straight up and down cut. The road dept came by and cut the ditches the other day too. I mean if the tree falls from high wind that wont help but for limbs in over and through the lines it wont happen.

Our local power company uses Asplundh for tree clearing. I'm not sure what their criteria is for when and where they clear, whether they do their own scouting or rely on "Florida Flicker & Flash" (Florida Power & Light) to tell them where to clear.

I'd ask for your mayor/town council to ring them up and ask for a town discount since you're town is obviously the least valuable customer to JCPL.

I think the hurricane was lucky for me. We've had large surges and flickering lights for a month on our property. The guy who they sent out a month ago had no idea. I think I got one of their experts who was staged for the hurricane this time. He took one look and knew that it was the crimps between our copper wires and their aluminum wires up at the weather tight entry point. He replaced all three crimps in about fifteen minutes. No more problem. :D The problems a slight bit of corrosion can cause.

We are still out in the Farmington Valley, with an estimated restoration time of 9pm today. Our town is still about 75% out and with a heat wave coming Monday it’s going to be a nail biter. We are doing fine. I was able to use one of my computer battery backups to power the fan for the natural gas water heater so we have some hot water for a couple more days.

Still a long way to go for us to match our worst storm from October 2011 where we were out for almost 2 weeks.

This helped us as we tried to figure out what was good to try and keep. Not sure about running out and restocking right away when the power comes back on.

Small blessings that at least they don't look to move beyond Cat I... at this time

Things are looking better for my wife's birthday on Sunday at Fort Myers. The dinner-theater we are going to is normally dark on Monday and Tuesday anyway, so staying open Sunday night ought to be fine with them. At curtain time on Sunday (7pm) the storm will still be over eastern Cuba and there still should be little effect in the area. However, the drive home the next day might be a bit rainy and windy, probably no worse than the weather we've had every afternoon in the past week.
