Damn. One of my favorites. I don't think I ever saw a movie he was in that I didn't like him.

While I came to know him for much more, his role in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (and the whole film) had a huge impact on me as a kid, and resonates with me to this day. R.I.P.
I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

You knew it was going happen sooner rather than later but this one really hurts. Of course it would happen in 2020. He's always been one of my favorite actors. RIP

This. Dad and I would watch Connery Bond movies over and over again. Some of my favorite memories with him.

Re: RIP Sean Connery
RIP Sean and thanks for the great entertainment. A another large as life great has passed. Such an iconic person.
I remember the first time I ever heard of or saw him. Its was 1983's Never Say Never Again. I was 13 or 14 and was left to see it at the theater. As soon as he showed up I was "Who is this guy? Thats not Bond" because Id only seen Roger Moore. lol. I went back and acquainted myself with him. Amazing Bond. Heck all he did I enjoyed. Even the Scottish Russian sub captain.
Some memorable characters for me would be James Bond, Zardoz, Ramirez , Col. Alan Caldwell, Dr Jones, Ramius, Allan Quatermain, von Baskerville(look it up...great movie), and many others.
I knew he seemed in worse shape from pics this year or last. No one gets out alive so they say. Still a hard one to take. A mans man.

He may have had some issues with how he treated women, but I still enjoyed his work. Too bad he didn’t live to see Scotland break off from the U.K..

Re: RIP Sean Connery
Several months ago I realized I'd never watched a Bond movie all the way through, and decided to remedy that by watching the Connery Bond, source of so many tropes, from Austin Powers to Archer. I didn't watch any of the post-Connery Bond movies because what's the point? I'm not a fan of the genre, and none of the successor actors would be able to out-Bond Sean Connery. RIP.

Re: RIP Sean Connery
A definite legend and icon. I knew it was a matter of time, but my Dad commented that that the last time he was in a movie, looked in his 70's, so I think he'd been retired for roughly 15 years. Sad day
I feel Daniel Craig has come close, and then to me, Roger Moore would be close behind.

Bet you didn't know he placed 3rd in the 1953 Mr Universe competition. I sure didn't until Arnold mentioned it.

Re: RIP Sean Connery
I’m not a big fan of Daniel Craig. I don’t think he does a bad job as an actor, but he’s far too rough around the edges IMO. He lacks the sophistication that I think is required to properly be Bond.Rumpy wrote:I feel Daniel Craig has come close, and then to me, Roger Moore would be close behind.
It’s why Kilmer and Clooney couldn’t effectively play Batman. They lack the dark side of Bruce Wayne that is no necessary to the character (which Keaton and Bale have in great supply).
Roger Moore had almost too much sophistication. I was a fan of Brosnan, and even Dalton, as I felt that they had the necessary components of Bond (even if some of the movies were trash).
But Bond will always be Connery in my eyes.

Re: RIP Sean Connery
My favorite non-Bond Connery is General Urquhart in A Bridge Too Far. It was the first war movie I saw that featured operational complexity and friction rather than buddy-movie heroics.
Plus Connery is pretty damn well cast as the original:

Craig is closer to the book version of Bond...but he’s actually not rough enough to match.RunningMn9 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 7:25 pm

Craig started as Bond in 2006. Goldmember was released in 2002. There was no way to put any comedy into the series that wouldn't have been immediately panned.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: RIP Sean Connery
First too rough, then not rough enough. Sheesh, tough crowd
There's a reason Craig's Bond was a rebooted Bond. The series by then had descended into absurdity with Brosnan, and was praised at the time for being closest to the books.

To a certain extent, but I have a soft spot for them. I never really liked Brosnan though. I felt they were a little too over-the-top.Scuzz wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2020 7:33 pmI thought the latter Roger Moore movies had already descended into absurdity.

Re: RIP Sean Connery
The report of why he died is out.
The cause of death was not revealed at the time, though it was believed to be due to natural causes. Now TMZ reports that is indeed the case according to the death certificate which indicates he died from respiratory failure as a result of pneumonia, atrial fibrillation and ‘old age’ as the causes.
Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rate that can increase the risk of strokes, heart failure and other heart-related complications.
Connery’s wife of 45 years, Micheline Roquebrune, previously said he also had a long battle with dementia and ‘went peacefully’ in his sleep.
