newsflash: fad diets still suck

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/05/health/m ... index.html
The Dukin and keto diets, which stress eating high-protein or high-fat foods with minimal carbohydrates, came in last and next-to-last in the diet rankings. Those diets are typically rated poorly by experts because they are extremely restrictive, hard to follow, and eliminate entire food groups, which is not recommended by dietary guidelines.

I don't quite get the whole code thing, but I'm trying to lose some weight, so we'll see. I signed up for Noom a few days ago, we'll see how that goes. Mainly trying to get down below 200 in 2021, ideally to ~ 190.

Code keeps in a subsection with a scroll bar after a certain line numbers to keep it from becoming a wall of text.

Apparently keeping track of my weight makes me more thoughtful about what I eat.

20210102 - 145.2 -- apparently eating an entire coffee cake over the course of a week on top of christmas dinner and holiday related treats has consequences...

I'm back on the wagon after a pretty disastrous 2020. Went from probably the best shape of my life pre-pandemic to hitting my highest weight ever. I never really gave up workouts (still ran moderately, was doing strength training for a bit in there), but working from home + not eating right overshadowed all of that.

Even though Spartan classes are not back in session due to Covid, the trainers kicked off the new year by releasing workout "homework" twice a week. This is great as it allows me to at least get back in the flow with some challenging workouts, and they're tailoring them to be doable from home which is even better. Between that and running, I'm hoping to turn things around this year.

So off we go!

I remember a couple of coworkers trying the Dukan Diet a few years ago. We'd go to Chipotle and they'd just get bowls of pretty much nothing but meat and some veggies. I found it hilarious.

To really contribute to this thread, I've decided that the lack of activity and extra beer drinking during the pandemic has put my weight at levels I don't like. My first big change is no alcohol through at least February. Let's see how this goes.

I don't totally get the logic of temporarily stopping alcohol if you plan to start again later. Seems like what matters is weight over the long term, not over the next couple months - shouldn't the planning be around a sustainable long-term diet?

It should, but I needed something to get myself jumpstarted, and ditching alcohol for a bit is the quickest way. I plan on making changes to how I consume said alcohol when I start back up again (the days of 3 16 oz DIPAs are likely long gone except for rare occasions, for instance).

I know from experience if I try to make massive changes all at once, I'm going to be unhappy with things and give up. This is just the first step of more gradual changes.

If you binge drink until you vomit, you will probably be ahead of the game... hmmm is alcohol driven binge/purge a recognized category of ED (eating disorder, not erectile dysfunction)?

I stopped drinking 4 years ago (3? 5? I don't remember) and it hardly made a difference... apparently 10-15 beers a year isn't that impactful.

To be fair, I haven't drunk until I vomited since I was in my 20s. I also haven't gone crazy on tequila since that night (though it was a lot of fun otherwise!). But my current issue is a love of those big 8% ABV beers, which pack in a ton of empty calories, and decreased physical activity due to a lot of the hockey I play getting shut down due to the pandemic.

Scale needs batteries, but 15 days in and I've exceeded my goal of 10,000 steps every single day.

I, OTOH, have stopped walking. I've been working a lot of hours and it's winter. It's hard to get motivated even on nice days when it's 30 degrees. But it's a mild winter, and I could be racking up 10-12 miles a week easily. I'm resolved to start walking again next week if the weather holds and if my client eases up on the assignments...I need to work thru this weekend to catch up. I'm putting in too much butt-in-seat time because I get paid for that.

I'll update my weight when I have some mileage to record. The trend line is not good right now.

I generally walk the kid to school, and the dog at the same time. Depending on the route, it's 2000 steps (directly to school and back because it's too fucking cold), 4500 steps (the long way home), or 8500 steps (the really long way home, or a stop at the post office). Fetching him is generally the 2000 step route. But generally in the morning if I have nothing else to do, I'll hamster wheel to 10,000 steps. Most days, therefore, I wind up between 13,000-17,000 steps, or nearly 10K.

I get about 1200 steps in 10 minutes on the hamster wheel. Not quite enough to cancel out the beers I might be drinking while doing it.

I’m still practicing Intermittent Fasting. I started more than 2 years ago and have now lost almost 50lbs effortlessly. Even since the start of the pandemic, I have lost about 20lbs, despite working from home, elevated levels stress and almost zero activity besides two daily walks around the block with my hubby and dog. I have been stuck between 148 and 150lbs so I’m looking to break through that plateau by starting to run again now that the days are lengthening.

Just one short walk in two weeks. Even though it's a mild winter, the mornings aren't rising to my minimum temperature threshold. I require at least 35 degrees -- or 30 if it's sunny and calm.

From March of 2019 until April of 2020 I worked out on my stationary bike a minimum of 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week. I didn't miss a single day that wasn't a 100% legitimate excuse (I believe I missed one day because I was in-bed sick, and missed one day when I was out of town for four days, and that's it.) Then, suddently, in a six-week period, the pandemic exploded, a lost a very close pet, the kids were out of school, and Michelle was starting a new job. The stores were out of most of my regular healthy foods, and my stress levels went through the roof. The whole program just fell apart - I let myself make a 'too stressed' excuse a couple of days, then it was a couple of weeks, then it was nine months. With all the crap I had to eat in the absence of good food, and with all the stress eating. Well, I lost a year's progress.

I started on the bike again last week. I'm now three workouts into week two, and haven't missed a day. I'm not up to the workout I was doing a year ago, but I have a written plan to increase it a little each week as I adapt, increasing the time, then the time again, then the intensity.

I'm still not eating great. I'm eating mostly healthy foods, my diet is still 90% plant based, but I'm not keeping track of what I'm eating again yet (so I tend to eat too much of the stuff on the less-healthy end of the line.) That'll be a change I make once the exercise is back up to full speed (which I estimate will take me six weeks), I'll be tackling this.

So, my starting "X" now is only two pounds below my starting "X" a couple of years ago. I had gotten down to around X-25.

Week three back on the bike, and I'm returning to some core exercises (just planks and pelvic lifts) to deal with my back pain after finding out from my doctor this week that I'm developing spinal arthritis. I took it a little easy on the workouts this week, and had to skip a couple, as I just started a new medication. It's a stimulant known to cause heart issues, and I wanted to see how I reacted to it before pushing my heart rate intentionally. I worked out Monday (before I started the meds), and again yesterday and today. While I do hit my target heart rate a little more easily (not necessarily a good thing), I will say that I have a lot more energy for the workouts now!

Im looking at a can of meat the food bank gave me. Its 24oz and has over 1200 calories and about 1000 of those are fat cal. 150% of my total daily fat and 220% of that is saturated. 150% daily cholesterol too. No fiber either. On the good side it has 120g protein. :)

So it's three 8-ounce meals worth of meat? Or four 6-ounce meals?
