Weight is still going in the wrong direction, but at least I'm finally racking up mileage. After a really dreadful summer, October has been dry and pleasant.

Check for toes! They should still be there. :D ...That was something I enjoyed when I got back to 200 or a bit under. I could look down and see my shoes / toes / feet without sucking in my belly or bending forward to look down.

20210402 - 139.6 -- final goal (140) achieved

I just wanted to see that 3 in the 10s spot (keeping the 1 in the hundreds!). I don' think I want to go much lower. I'll just keep an eye on things from here on out to make sure it doesn't get away from me.
I'm up 6 pounds since April, pretty much back to where I started for the year. I guess it's time to start paying attention again.

I managed to string together 19 consecutive days of walking before getting rained out. I don't think that's a record, but since I hadn't kept track, it's my benchmark to beat...probably next year, since the weather is deteriorating now.

I had a real eye-opener this week. I went to put on my old khaki work pants for a Halloween costume. These are the business casual pants I wore every day to work back at the start of 2020 - and I almost couldn't fit in them.

It's one thing to see your weight on the scale and know you've gained a few pounds, it's quite another to realize you can't even fit in your clothes anymore. Clearly, whatever I was doing was not working.

One thing I realized was that I was depending too much on my running to bail me out. And back in the day, running 3 days a week was enough to keep me in decent shape. I went out for a run the other day and mentioned to my neighbor that despite the jogging, I still wasn't losing any weight. He said, "You know, it's what you do in-between the runs that really matters." That really hit home. I was fooling myself into believing 3 little runs a week were enough to allow me to eat whatever I wanted and sit on my butt the other 95% of the time.

So I decided to quit running.

Not forever, but until I fix my mindset. Because I feel like the running was a barrier to consistency. I'd do well with training for a month or so, then I'd get sick or go on vacation, miss a week, and then feel like I had to start all the way over. Or I'd feel like "I ran today, so I can eat half a large pizza tonight." I realized running was doing more harm than good - it was either being used as a justification to be able to eat unhealthy (when I was consistent), or as the only option available to me so why bother doing anything if I can't run (when I was inconsistent).

Instead I'm walking every day. I walk during lunch, I walk during meetings. I have no excuses not to walk. I can't blame conditioning, I can't blame injury. Walking will be my key to consistency, and once I achieve consistency, then I'll think about re-incorporating running. But for now I've got to focus on true weight loss which is going to take consistent activity and (even more importantly) a renewed focus on what I eat rather than what I do.

The sad thing about exercising regularly is that your body "prices it in," so you have to keep doing it just to avoid gaining weight. Our bodies evolved to store fat in times of plenty, and they adjust to our activity level and calorie intake to avoid losing that fat. In October I managed to gain a pound despite walking for 19 consecutive days and racking up decent mileage. When I went from sedentary to exercising 17 years ago, I lost 35 lbs because my body wasn't used to the activity.

I like walking for a bunch of reasons, and I need to do it to avoid gaining weight, but I know I can't exercise myself thin.

Yep, it's the old 80/20 rule, and I've been focusing far more on the 20 than the 80.

I know that giving weight loss advice isn't always appreciated, and sometimes rightly so, therefore skip the rest of my post if you aren't interested.

For the past few years, anytime we were going on a trip I'd like my wife pick out what I was going to wear  and then I'd try on every pair of pants and shorts to make sure it fit well enough so I wouldn't be uncomfortable. This past spring my weight was up even more and I was really having to be careful with what got packed. And I was sweating even more and developing a gut. After my wife made a few choice comments  back in May, it kick-started me into getting serious about weight loss.

I was already walking any day we didn't have anything planned, but with increasing arthritis in my feet doing more walking wasn't an option. So I went on a rather aggressive change of eating habits. We were already eating meals only twice a day, so at those meals I cut down on what I ate (portion control) and also cut out certain sides, like if I had a sandwich I'd forgo the chips I usually had with them. I switched to a lite salad dressing and other changes of that ilk.

My biggest change was to cut out all junk food. No afternoon snacking on pretzels or chips, no late evening raids on the pantry. I also cut out all sweets, no cookies, candy or ice cream, in fact no desserts at all. Essentially I cut out all eating except for those two meals. I do allow myself a daily snack of a couple of kosher dill pickle spears. I also have a small bottle of caffeine free diet coke in the afternoon and in the evening I have a mug of hot tea, although I cut the amount of sugar I use in half. I tried it entirely without but that's too drastic.

I was dubious at first about results, but remembering having to deal with tight or not even fitting clothes was a good motivator. There were plateaus and reverses, but in the end I went down about thirty pounds in five months. I know that if I'm ever to back off from this change of eating habits my weight would go back up, so I'm sticking with it. The good news is that I went off the diet during our two week road trip and put on six pounds, but when we returned and I got back on the regimen I dropped five of those six pounds in nine days. So I can enjoy a trip as long as I commit to going back on the diet when we return.

The mixed news is that my shorts and pants are so loose now that without a belt they'd fall right off . So my wife wants to buy me a whole new set of clothes, but I know that is tempting fate

When I started walking and went from 200 to 165 lbs 17 years ago, I had to buy new clothes. After a couple of years I purged all of my fatsuits. After several years my skinny clothes got tight so I bought some normal clothes. Now the normal clothes are tight, but I refuse to go back to fatsuits. And I still have some skinny pants in the back of my closet, mocking me.

The pandemic gave me two bad habits: elastic waistbands and excessive drinking. The good news is that if I scale back my beer ration, I'll lose weight. Although I could stand to trim some food calories, I don't really eat excessively. The bad news is that the pandemic isn't over, and in fact the world is ending on so many different fronts (political, social, environmental) that unlimited beer seems like a rational response. The other good news is that my BMI says I'm not obese, so I don't feel a sense of emergency.

If I were serious about weight loss I'd switch to meth. Maybe next year.

Nope, I greatly appreciate it.

I've never focused too much on the eating side of things because I was fortunate enough to stay at a relatively healthy weight most of my life without doing much of anything. Once I really started running, even that was enough to stave off the few extra pounds here and there. So it's never been a necessity.

Now I'm at the point where I'm past the mid-40s, and I see a fork in the road that I never really saw before. One way leads to keeping more or less in the ballpark of where I was in my 30s. The other way leads to the path my dad took - 100 pounds overweight and suffering from multiple health issues. That latter path used to seem a far off fantasy that would never happen to me. Now I'm two years into a pandemic and realizing the weight I never thought I'd ever let myself get to is my new baseline. That path is not only a possibility, it's a probability if I don't nip it in the bud now.

I'm running into this as well. I always wore pants that were on the baggy side anyways, but after dropping 25 lbs, they're kinda starting to look a bit ridiculous. I'm a little nervous to try on the two suits I bought right before the pandemic (that I haven't had occasion to wear since) as I think they're going to fall right off me.

My main impetus for getting in better shape was to avoid turning into my dad. Looking at pictures of him from his 20's to his early 40's, he was a pretty slim guy. Not overly skinny, but never over 190'ish lbs (at 6'1"). By the time he hit 50, he had put on well over 100 lbs and had all sorts of health issues as a result. As I got closer to 50, I saw myself going down that same road. I finally made the conscious decision this year that I wasn't going to follow that route. It's been a life-saver, and I'm really hoping it is sustainable.

Being home instead of constantly on the road has done wonders for my diet. Instead of snarfing down whatever fast food was available as I ran between meetings or hitting the hotel bar for garbage food and a couple beers late at night, I have been able to get into a much better routine. I eat the exact same thing for breakfast (bowl of honey nut Cheerios and a cup of yogurt) and lunch (ham sandwich, apple, snack bag of chips) nearly every day now. Dinner varies, but is typically fast food only one day a week. It's still not a great diet and I could do much better, but it's miles ahead of what I had been doing. I have also found that I simply eat less when I'm not traveling.

If I could just cut out the daily Pepsi (or switch to diet...blech) I'd probably drop another few pounds pretty easily, but I haven't quite mustered the willpower for that yet.

Tomorrow will mark 17 years since I announced to Wife that I was going to walk down to the mailbox and back -- about half a mile round-trip. She looked at me like I was nuts; nobody had ever walked that far before. Well, I kept doing it and gradually expanded my route until I was routinely doing 3 miles a day, and sometimes 4.

In the 7 full years that I've had a smartphone to track my mileage, I've averaged just under 600 miles per year. In 17 years, I've walked 10,200 miles, more or less. Probably more, since I was younger in my younger days. But 10,000 is a nice round number, so I'm going with that.

Re: The Refashioned 2021 Weight Loss Thread

Post by jztemple2 »

Since my last update on 10/21 I got rid of the weight I picked up on the October trip, but then went on two trips in November. Biggest problem was that on our anniversary trip I wore my black dress shoes for the first time in several years and they aggravated the base of my big toe and triggered an inflammation that meant I couldn't take my morning walk for almost two weeks :(. I'm finally back to walking my regular three miles most mornings, but in less than two weeks I'm going off for another trip, so I'm just aiming to keep my weight no higher than it was when we came back from our October trip. And I got rid of those black dress shoes .

I'm going to try to post more regular updates. The good news - I finally got below 200 for the first time in months.

I have stalled. I took a week off of being 'good' (which I do a couple of times a year), but that butted right up against ten days of being sick, which butted up against a family emergency, which butted up against Caiden and Michelle quarantining for a total of three weeks, which butted up against this week (which has been crazy busy, with four hours-long after school events in five days.) And next week is Christmas. All in all, I haven't been able to get back into my routine for two months, and I hate it. I can feel the difference from not moving as much. I can feel that I've lost muscle, I have less energy, my digestion isn't as good, my back aches again.

I really just need to get through the next two weeks.

FWIW, though, I haven't gained much weight. The last time I saw the scales I was looking at five pounds (with 50 lost.) Of course, I also converted some muscle to fat, so that's a little misleading.

I will let that stand as my end-of-year mark. 50.5 pounds lost! I'm surprised I haven't gained more, given that my routine has gone completely to hell over the past six weeks. Still, it's giving my body a break, and when I kick it back into gear after the holidays, it may bump me beyond my earlier plateau.

Well, I lost 2.8 negative pounds this year, and fell short of my annual average of 600 miles walked. Not a good year, especially since we're now in weight-gain season. I did break 550 miles, which is pretty decent considering that I lost half of the prime summer season to record heat and rainfall.

On the plus side, I lived to join the next yearly thread.

I'll put in today's weight as my final for 2021: 207.3. Started at 233, so a little over 25 lbs lost this year. Was hoping to get down to 203 to make it an even 30 lbs, but was thwarted by the holidays and a 3 week running break.

Will be shooting for between 190-195 in 2022.

Dec 15 - 199.5, Dec. 29 - 205.5. Do I really think I gained 6 pounds in 2 weeks? Not likely - I think the low number was a before-meals, after exercising measurement while the Dec. 29 was the exact opposite. But still, there's no doubt the holidays did me no favors.

I don't like throwing out food, and even my kids don't eat a lot of sweets so I end up doing the "well I can't just let this entire cake go to waste" thing. I've got to get over that guilt factor. I've been known to eat an entire pie in a couple of days so it doesn't go to waste. The problem is it's going to "waist." :D

I learned early on that weights can vary in the 5-7 pound range daily just depending on where in the digestion process you are. That's why most of the pros recommend setting an 'ideal' time for weighing yourself (I do it in the morning before eating, after going to the bathroom) and then to only do it ever few days and average them together - weigh every 2-4 days and keep a running 14 day average rather than paying attention to daily numbers.

Same. I weigh in after my morning dump and before going walking every Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, and then report whichever day's weight is closest to last week's reported number. I can fluctuate up to 1.5 lbs among those three days (although the readings are usually within 0.5 lb).

The method I actually used was just to weigh myself every day or two and only record low numbers, but that was when I was doing things in a way that weight gain wasn't really possible (calorie restriction plus exercise.) The daily variations are additions to your weight, not reductions, and since gaining wasn't likely, the low weights were closer to true body weight and accurate for measuring losses.

But this method would absolutely not work for someone who was both losing and gaining, or just trying to maintain. For those, you want the average.
