Re: NFL 2021 Preseason

If this is true, it makes more sense why they made the Broncos play last year when none of their QBs were eligible due to COVID protocols.
John Elway, Denver’s president of football operations, made several frustrated pleas to Goodell to postpone the Sunday game until Tuesday, when the quarterbacks would be available. The league denied those requests because surveillance video from Denver’s facility showed the quarterbacks had tried to fool the system. They had removed their contact-tracing devices and put them in the four corners of the meeting room, then they sat together to watch film. That close contact automatically made them ineligible to play.

And what was even the point? Couldn't they have all watched film together in that same room, just sitting where they put their contact tracing bracelets? Idiots.

Hate watch is right. I have no players on either team in FF this year, so really can hope they both lose.

Yeah, same here. In some ways him going to Tampa has me rooting more for him individually, since when he was with the Patriots I was mostly just rooting for him to help the Patriots, and now I'm rooting for him individually due to a mix of nostalgia and not caring about the Bucs.

That said, I only watched the end of the 2nd quarter last night and then realized I was pretty bored and watched Succession instead for the rest of the evening. Which is great, incidentally.

Succession is great, but that was a fantastic game last night. It's hard to gauge the Cowboys from last night, but they gave the defending champs a fight and likely would've won if not for 2 missed FGs (albeit one from 60 yards) and a very questionable not called offensive PI on the last drive. I think that bodes well for this season. At the very least, it bodes well for anyone with Dak on their fantasy team.

The Cowboys made the critical error of leaving Brady too much time (has he ever failed is such a situation?). Fortunately the Cowboys are easily in my top 5 most hated franchises.

Superb Owl 52?

I had to pick that one because of the thumbnail, but this one (which won't embed) is awesome because it shows the play many many times with different announcers each time.

The Jets have no offensive line. The half time show tried to say it was a Wilson problem but he's been running for his life the whole game.

Has anyone used NFL Game Pass to watch replays? They claim you can watch the game immediately after the final whistle, but I'm trying to watch some now and they say it takes 2-4 hours for the game to be available. Which is it?

They also claim no commercial interruptions, but the games that are available are running 3.5 hours - which is way off. Are they just lying?

I don't want to risk the sports bars right now and thought this might be a viable option, but it's going to be tough if it's 4 hours after the late game ends.

Most bogus call of the day (so far) is Justin Herbert of the Chargers with a 20 yard forward "fumble." Can you imagine the furor if the Chargers had recovered that for a TD? It looks like the refs have been instructed to call fumble any time a defensive player is touching the QB. Just wait until that call goes against Brady or Mahomes.

I went ahead and got the streaming version of NFL Sunday Ticket that I watch through my Roku. I was able to convince a friend of mine in grad school to sign up for me, since students get a +50% on the season ($120 rather than almost $300). Definitely worth it for me at the lower price since the local games in our area are generally terrible. Also, the Red Zone channel is money.

It would be the Baseball / Football rant.

Ya know this isn't Baseball....
Baseball is played in a park, on a diamond / Football is played on a gridiron in a stadium.... a War Memorial Stadium...
In Baseball, you wear a cap / In Football, you wear a helmet.
Baseball has a 7th inning stretch / Football has a 2 minute warning!
Baseball has no time limit and they can have extra innings, Football : sudden death.
In Football you make a Foul. In Baseball, it's an error. "Ooops"!
As a QB, I need to be on target with my aerial assault, and I may need to use a shotgun or make short bullet passes while avoiding the blitz.
In baseball, they are just trying to go home.

I thought the streaming version of Sunday Ticket was only available if you were in an area where you couldn't get DirecTV? Can anyone just buy the streaming option? If so, I'm probably in on that, even at the $300 price point. Divided up over the course of the season, that's a lot cheaper and easier than trying to make it out to a sports bar to watch. And safer!

That was my understanding. When I tried to sign up for it, it said it was not available in my area (presumably since I live in a single family home and could mount a dish if I wanted to).

Yep. Just tried chatting with a DIRECTV sales person. This is from the horse's mouth:
The ticket streaming-only option is only offered to college students or persons living in a no satellite dish area.
It's like, I'm literally dying to give them my money, and they're like, "Nah. No thanks." I'd love to understand the business model that supports the decision to not offer streaming to willing purchasers who don't want to deal with satellite service. Do they really think that people who do not want to switch from cable to DirecTV are going to change their minds because you are withholding Sunday Ticket?

I'm sure there are some, but do they outnumber all the people who would jump on the chance to stream all NFL games during the season?

Yeah - DirectTV doesn't make it available to everyone, which is why had a friend in college sign up for me. I suppose the idea is that students may be living in dorms and so can't get DirectTV and so they allow a streaming option for them. You guys just need to make some college-aged friends!

We have spun off the TV entity and I would have no first-hand knowledge of the situation anyway as that wasn't my line of business. That said, it's possible that the NFL limited the grant of streaming rights to this narrow window because they wanted to hold on to the majority of streaming rights for their own purposes (including selling them to someone else).

It was location based when I tried to do it. So if a college kid put in their address as their parent's house - no. If they put in their address as the dorm room and then streamed while at their parent's house - yes.

It's not location based for college students. When you go to the Sunday Ticket sign up site, you can check student eligibility or check address eligibility. If a student, it doesn't matter the address; every student who has helped me sign up for this in the past (I've had it the last four years or so using three different students) all lived in apartments.

edit: all that is to say that a college student living at home should be eligible.

That MNF game was trash for 3 and a half quarters. Of course, I fell asleep right before the two teams exploded for a ton of points in the final 10 minutes of regulation and OT. At least the Ravens lost. :D

Did anyone watch the Manning brothers on ESPN2? I gave it a shot for the first quarter, but it was terrible. It was basically an awkward Zoom call. And ESPN's production values are the worst. Peyton's mic broke at one point, you could hear the technical director counting in and out of breaks, and a freakin fire alarm went off in the studio!

Still, it's an interesting concept that I hope succeeds. I have friends who swear it got better as the game went on, and I watched some highlights this morning. The biggest issue for me was that they wouldn't focus on the game, telling long stories instead of talking about what happened on the field. They need a play-by-play/moderator to keep them on track. And the lack of excitement for big plays killed me.

I heard Manning talking on Bill Simmons' podcast - that is not what the plan for this feed was. You're supposed to feel like you're sitting on the couch with them and just watching the game and talking football. Of course it might change overtime if people hate it. :)

The finish on that MNF game last night was nuts. I was sure the Raiders were going to screw that up in OT. They did, in fact, like multiple times.

On the first go around, after the TD got ruled down at the 1 (should have been the 1/2 but for a terrible spot), they failed to sneak it in. Then, they false start due to Carr's screwy cadence. Then, they move back 5 yards, abandon the run and throw a pic. Not to mention that throughout this, they burned all their timeouts, needlessly giving the Ravens D recovery time when they were on their heels and hurting.

Then, the defense makes a great play and forces a Ravens turnover, and the Raiders recover at the 30 and continued to try to blow it.

They do the smart thing on first down and run the ball and pick up a few yards, but then, on second down, they inexplicably decide they're going to kick a FG rather than gain additional yards. I'd understand if this were a chip shot, but this was like a 45 yarder at that point. Or if it were 3rd down and you have confidence in your kicker and wanted to give yourself another shot in case of a botched snap or something, that approach makes sense. But this was 2nd down. And this FG was not a gimme. Of course, because they are a hot mess, the Raiders take too long to make this decision and, with no timeouts left, take a delay of game penalty moving them back 5 yards, which, apparently, changed the calculus enough to change course and put Carr and the offense back on the field.

So, lulled into a false sense that the Raiders were going to play it conservatively - so conservative as to kick a FG on second down - the Ravens were totally caught off guard when Carr threw a bomb for a TD to end the game on the next play.

I'm sure that was just how Chucky drew that up.

It was entertaining, at least!

The story is not that they took too long to make the decision, but that they couldn't find their kicker. They said he was warming up kicking into the net...which seems to me the first place one would look, but I am not a Raider.

I get that. I just didn’t feel like I was watching football. I was watching them tell stories unrelated to what was happening on the field.

Supposedly it got a lot better as the game went on. I’ll tune in again next week to see.

Apparently he didn't expect them to kick a FG on 2nd down either!

This recap by The Ringer suggests it did.
But as the game went on, the Mannings skipped the bits and just talked. The New York Post reports that by halftime, ESPN management told them to “focus more on football.” They broke down the defenses and explained what the quarterbacks might be thinking on various plays. They added recollections from their own careers—like the time Peyton tried to write an apology letter to a ref but couldn’t get his address because the NFL feared that he was seeking retribution for a call, or the surprising admission that “halftime adjustments” are essentially a myth since teams don’t actually have enough time to strategize in the relatively short breaks. They spent an extended period of time making fun of Kyle Boller, which might have been the most entertaining part of an entertaining evening. It probably wasn’t the best way to watch a football game for fans of one of the teams—the Mannings sometimes got so excited breaking down a particular play that they skipped over live game action—but it was fun to watch a game with them. It had the closeness and casual feel of a Twitch stream, except the two streamers were two of the most famous football men alive.
