[FX] What We Do in the Shadows

Post by Smoove_B »

We've had random discussions in various threads; this show deserves it's own.

So for the upcoming Season 3:

Experience the world in Vampire Reality. What We Do in the Shadows returns Sept 2 on FX.
EDIT: for those confused and that want to catch up, please do enjoy the S1 Trailer from 2019:

I'm really looking forward to it. When it first appeared I was afraid that it was going to be a stale rehash of the movie and mockumentary tropes in general. And they went in all sorts of directions with it. It's just pleasantly all over the place. Plus, Matt Berry is a treasure. The whole cast is fantastic but he is the unheart and unsoul of it for sure -- 'BAT!'

I went in as a skeptic. And the first couple of episodes didn't really work for me...then suddenly everything just clicked into place and I was smitten.

The Jackie Daytona episode may be one of the funniest half hours of television I've ever seen.

And yes, Matt Berry is a comedy god. From the IT Crowd and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, to the goddamn brilliant Toast of London, he's just perfect in anything he does.

I couldn't agree more about Matt Berry. His Shakespearean delivery of the dumbest lines is perfection. And Jackie Daytona and his toothpick disguise. That will never be topped.

What killed me the most about the Jackie Daytona episode was that I had no idea that was Mark Hamill as Jim the vampire until the end credits.

I didn't either. And he went unrecognized without a toothpick.

The cause of Jim the vampire's hatred of Laszlo made me laugh even harder.

Also, I want a Nadja doll. But only if it's a talking, smart ass version like hers.

The clue for me that it was Mark Hamill was that the accent/voice was close to his 'Joker' voice.

The original movie is great. I love the dry humour ! Really really well done.
While feeding all the beasties out back I let a nice big fart. The smell followed all the way back to the house. It's like it was my baby and felt abandoned.

This show would be about 10 times less funnier without this ensemble though. They elevate everything, no matter how cheesy, to comedy gold.

I originally tuned in just to watch Matt Berry, but the rest of the cast is equally as good. Nadja is probably my favorite of the bunch. She can make literally any line hilarious, simply by her facial expressions.

And the Nadja doll? Whoever created that thing is a goddamn genius. It's so hilariously expressive.

I've gone back and started watching the first two seasons again in prep for season 3. The first couple of episodes were rough as they found their footing, but it really takes off after that. They stop trying to ham it up (EXCEPT for Matt Berry who actually leans into it extra hard at some point...and it works because he's Matt Friggin' Berry) and they just sink into their characters.

I am re-watching as well and I think it is even more subtly spectacular. I almost believe they are playing it straight. Over time the characters are getting used to the "crew following them".

I guess they couldn't get the actor to come back for an appearance in S3, but hopefully Jackie Daytona will make some time to appear in S4.

It’s all Matt Berry and it’s all brilliant.

Really strong start to the new season.

The whole cloak of duplication gag - I didn't realize they didn't dub voices, it was the actor that plays Nandor actually doing imitations of his fellow cast members!

After watching the clip about Clem Fandango quite a while ago, I started to watch the whole series. I certainly appreciate his comedic style, and that particular scene had me almost bawling, but the show as a whole didn’t grab me. Maybe it was the writing, dunno.

It could also be that that scene was so brilliant and hilarious, that I expected that level from the rest of the show, which I didn’t get.

I’ve probably watched and re-watched that clip 12 times (and showing others). It’s comedic perfection to my particular tastes, and the timing (not just him, everyone) is amazing.

OMG that's great! I'd assumed it was dubbing.

I did see Nandor's actor (Kayvan Novak) in an interview once. His natural British accent was jarring.

Nadja is the only dub. When I'd heard Lazlo it sounded a tiny bit off, but I wasn't sure if that actor was trying to disguise his voice as Nandor. I need to go back and watch those scenes again as I would have bet money it really was the actor that plays Gizmo dubbed in.

I think it was funnier than it should have been because of Nandor's accent. I think overall their accents add like 37% more funny to everything. :D

It feels like this season they’re trying harder to spread around the screen time more. The last two seasons it felt like Matt Berry was almost the star of the show. Which…it’s Matt Freakin’ Berry, I can’t blame them.

But this season it feels like they realize they’ve got a fantastic ensemble and they going to really use them.

Also, I laugh every time I hear Nandor mutter, “This fucking guy.”

I feel like my enjoyment of Matt Berry has gone up at least 37% after watching Toast of London. Like...just the “Cornelius Dong’s Adventures in the Boner Brigade never came out in hardback..." made me giggle.

But yeah, I'm enjoying this season so far. It's such a weird show (if you tried describing it to someone), but somehow it all works. I mean, a garage door was a major plot point, and it was hilarious.

That’s another thing I forgot to mention. Kristen Schaal is effing hilarious in her role. Listening to her explaining the giant button to Laszlo and Colin was fantastic. She captures the whole middle management vibe perfectly.

And yeah, why would you hide going to a penny porno? Not that I’ve visited one, of course… :ninja:

And I love little throwaway lines like, “The Vampiric Council confiscated my jalopy for transporting miners across state lines.” and when you hear it you’re thinking minors but they were actual miners.

OMG, I'm about 2/3 through the latest episode (S3 e8 The Wellness Center).

The early scenes didn't grab me, but the cut to where you hear the Barenaked Ladies and thereafter just kicks everything up to magnificent.

I'm really enjoying this series, and started binge watching a few weeks ago. Not sure how far along I am until the current season or episodes (just finished watching the one where the familiar is zombified/rezzed), so not sure if I have hit the payout yet.

But to date, I would not rate it in my top five (or maybe even ten) comedy series. It's good, I would even say VERY good, it just very rarely makes me laugh out loud like so many others I have watched (that's kind of my own personal metric).

I get the Jemaine Clement vibe, of course, but it's not as funny as Flight of the Conchords (to me, obviously), which I thought was brilliant. Another personal metric: do I re-watch the show, or do I have the desire to re-watch the show, out of fear that I missed some hilarious lines (probably bc I was laughing out loud)? If yes, then probably in my top ten. Arrested Development, Community, Parks and Rec, It's Always Sunny, etc all had me wanting to go back and re-watch at some point (some more than others).

I need to go back and watch the movie (that I helped on Kickstarter for some crazy reason) to compare, but I THINK I remember slightly being let down by the movie as well (note that my expectations were crazy high).

I'm kind of in the same camp. There are a few episodes that make me laugh out loud, but for the most part I'm just enjoying it for the chemistry between the cast, the absurd situations that arise and my love of all things Matt Berry.

I will say season 3 feels WAY more absurd than previous seasons. To the Nth degree.

At first I viewed Kristin Schall as an intruder, but she's starting to grow on me. I LOL once or twice per episode...usually more of a snort than a guffaw, though. Mostly I enjoy its inventiveness -- sort of like a Munsters or Addams Family for the 21st century, but only sort-of. You never know where it's going next.

I'm still enjoying the show but I don't think season 3 has reached the heights of season 2. Still, one of the better current comedies.
