[Book] Calvin Trillan - Obliviously On He Sails

Post by noun »

Anyone ever read this? Trillan is a poet who writes satirical poetry for The Nation. This particular tome is dedicated to lampooning Bush and the Republicans in general. Some of it's pretty dry, but there are some true lines of inspired genius here and there. My favorites:
You cannot find a job? No cash is flowing?
You haven't paid your bills, which have been growing?
You'll never get the money you've been owing?
Be happy: The economy is slowing.

The strategy is working fine.
It's not a time for you to whine.

You're running out of things that you can sell?
Your health insurance just ran out as well?
Your life is an unmitigated hell?
Be happy, for the Dow's responding well.

So try to take the macro view.
It's not about just little you.
For years, estates of wealthy men were taxed.
The sort of thing that spoils a nice good-bye.
The tax will fade away in nine more years.
And then the rich will find it safe to die.
A right to counsel and a right to trial?
John Ashcroft wonders: How do you suppose
We'll save our freedoms and our way of life
If we start granting everybody those?
At 111 half-empty pages, it's a little thin to justify it's $12.95 price tag, but it's worth a checkout from your local library. Yay the Daily Show for informing me about this.

He cracked me up on the Daily Show when he read some hilarious excerpts. Funny dude. I don't have the book but maybe I'll pick it up someday.
