The Catalan [..] independence movements,
I would never have wasted my ore and grain upgrading to a city if I knew it was planning to secede.

Catalan Parliament votes to secede by 2017
All 72 separatist lawmakers -- the majority in the northeastern region's parliament -- voted for a resolution aimed at creating an independent republic by 2017.

The proposal was tabled by pro-secession lawmakers from the "Together for Yes" alliance and the extreme left-wing Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP). The groups together obtained a parliamentary majority in regional elections in September.

Parties favouring independence from Spain won a majority of seats in the Catalan regional election in September. The Spanish constitution does not allow any region to break away, however, and the centre-right government of Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy, facing a general election in December, has said it will immediately seek to block the resolution in the courts.

Never over indeed.
Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed she will ask for permission to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence.

Ms Sturgeon said she wanted a vote to be held between the autumn of 2018 and the spring of the following year.

That would coincide with the expected conclusion of the UK's Brexit negotiations.

The Scottish first minister said the move was needed to protect Scottish interests in the wake of the UK voting to leave the EU.

She will ask the Scottish Parliament next Tuesday to request a Section 30 order from Westminster.

The order would be needed to allow a fresh legally-binding referendum on independence to be held.
So would this be Scoxit from the UK, or Scontrance to the EU? #IndyRef2

Truly a mess for Scotland - they are being dragged out of the EU against the will of their populace. Every county in Scotland voted to stay in the EU. Worse independence might not get them into the EU on their own anyway. The EU doesn't want to encourage independence movements in other countries such as Spain. And then they have to deal with currency issues as well - do they stay with the pound? Will they be forced into the Euro? There definitely is a lot of uncertainty now for the Scots.

Hard to imagine that a new Scottish independence referendum wouldn't pass. It was narrow last time, and that was before the Brexit vote.

No doubt - probably 60+% support for it now. They really only lost after many were convinced they wouldn't get back into the EU. Now they don't have to worry about that part of the equation. The other part is will they get Parliament to authorize the 2nd referendum now. I am willing to guess they aren't too keen on it.

Yeah, I can't imagine that they would, unless the Scots can force the issue somehow. A loss in any referendum seems more clearcut now, and the Parliament can always say "we just did that, we're not going to do another one again so soon."

Independent
Spanish national police have stormed ministries and buildings belonging to Catalonia's regional government to put a stop to the region's independence referendum.

The Guardia Civil, which acts with the authority of Madrid's interior ministry, is searching for evidence regarding the planned 1 October referendum on Catalan independence, which Spain's Constitutional Court has declared illegal.

In the early hours of the morning armed officers arrived at various Catalan ministries, including the economy department, foreign affairs department, and social affairs department, Spanish media reports.

At least twelve Catalan officials are said to have been arrested, including the chief aide to Catalonia's deputy prime minister, Josep Maria Jové. The arrests come as the mayors of Catalan towns who back the referendum were yesterday questioned by state prosecutors.
...
The president of the province's national assembly, Jordi Sànchez, on Wednesday morning called for "peaceful resistance" to the police operation.

“The time has come. We resist peacefully. We come out to defend our institutions with non-violence,” he said in a post on social media.
...
The Spanish national assembly on Wednesday rejected a motion to support the Spanish government's heavy-handed response to the the referendum by 166 votes against to 158 in favor, after the centre-left opposition party PSOE teamed up with left-wingers Podemos and smaller separatist parties in the parliament.

Boris Johnson's sleaze problems are leading to increasing calls for Scottish independence again. Also factors are Brexit and the pandemic.
